*Client calles me at 7Am*
Client: why did you make everything smaller on my website ?
Me: look at the right side of your URL bar, do you see a minus sign ?
Client: yah, so ?
Me: click on it and set it back to default.
Client: oh ok this is working for me now, will this fix apply globally across the internet
Me: ...
Client: oh I think I asked a stupid question, thanks mate have a good day.
Me: you're welcome...17 -

I made a Trello board and listed some tasks for me and my team.
My boss comes in, I show him the trello board to show how I organized our tasks.
He liked it, so I asked him if we can use it more frequently.
He replied: this is your code, do whatever you want.
I asked: my code?
He replied: yah didn't just build this webpage? This interactive task manager.
Me in shock: hold on you think I built trello?
Boss: oh ... You didn't ? It looks like something you'd do for your "front end masterbaution".
Me: oh wow, well... If that was the case I would've made $425 million on top of my salary.
Boss: looked at me like meh ~ and walked away...7 -

My recent failure to build a responsive website according to a template tells me I should have worked with CSS a bit more.
The thing is, I write the type of CSS that passes the CSS validation with flying colors, but doesn't work as it should. Am I a minority(I hate that word), in that?
Now I have to redo the website or I'm not passing the exam. Lovely.5 -
Boss: Great news, we are getting another backend dev from another team to help us out.
Me: Cool, hopefully we don’t have the same trouble as the others, not replying, never writing anything down etc.
Boss: No, I’ve worked with her before. She’s much more passionate about doing things right, using best practices and all that stuff.
Me: Oh that’s perfect, great news!
Boss: Yep! ... just be aware she has a tendency to get very easily confused. She delivers the wrong thing from time to time and might need to redo stuff semi-regularly.
Me: ... ... ...
Boss: It’ll all work out. Don’t worry. Ok gotta run.15 -

Sometimes I wish I was allowed to just strangle my colleagues...
Example from the 'code base':
try:
do_something()
except Exception as e:
log(e)
do_something()
When I asked why they would redo the same call right after it failed I was told that 'It works the second time because it takes time to raise the Exception '.
Bitch, you've got a race condition in your sensitive banking software. You know it's there. Do you really want to trust the time needed to raise your exception will always be enough to synch that dumpster fire you call code?
Show some fucking respect for your craft and fix that shit. But of course they won't, because it will work flawlessly until it suddenly stops working. Taking down who knows what in this damn, undocumenred monolith with it....
Sometimes I'm honestly afraid to trust banks with my money.7 -

New client wanted us to redo their site and boost their SEO because "nobody has ever used our contact form".
Looking at their current site, turns out their contact form is POSTed to an HTML page, that obviously does 0 processing on it. Like tossing it on the trash bin.

Hey devRant. What the fuck is up?
I'm new and just wanted to say hi or whatever. I don't even work in any computer science related job. I'm a fucking welder.
I have aspirations one day to be just like you nerds. I fall asleep at my desk almost every night taking random online programming classes which I lose interest halfway through to some OTHER class and redo the same shit.

Dear senior developer with xx years of development experience, please, I BEG OF YOU hear my humble unprofessional opinion.
Not every junior is a inexperienced low life.
Even though I'm glad that I'm working with someone of your wide skill set and expertise, I'm not working with you by choice nor it is my intention to distract or "steal" your knowledge.
When I suggested using a newer version of jQuery for this new project that didn't mean I'm challenging you to work on something new for your domain, I'm merely suggesting this change because jQuery 1.2 is just old and a big portion of it is deprecated.
When I suggest some changes on your CSS selectors that doesn't mean I'm acting out of place, it is my genuine interest of having effecient css where possible.
I know you (in your opinion) are the best full stack developer in the industry, but maaaan you kill me when you use js and regex to validate input type=email (table filp) ... Haalllloooo it's 2017 this Sunday aren't we supposed to progress instead of remaining in the same old same ?

Our working hours are from 9 to 6 which is the standard in Malaysia (I'm not malaysian )
Yesterday I came in around 10AM and my boss took me to his room as soon as I arrived.
Boss: If you were in school and you come late what do you expect to happen ?
Me: get punished, I'll compensate by working an extra hour today.
Boss: well our clients aren't available at your extra hour and I'm struggelling with a big client you're supposed to ship the rest of his site and golive today and he's freaking out
Me: yh well his site is done it just needs final QA before going live.
Boss: oh its done already?, cool cool. Anyway you shouldn't be late you're not Malaysian and being late doesn't run in your genes like them.

A previous co-worker (dev) bought a "foot mouse" he found on a Chinese website, then changed his keyboard's layout to match the "natural human cognitive ability" also bought a sleeping bag because he needed a "power nap" after lunch break he even asked our MD to buy him an ergonomic chair which would cost around 1200 USD ( of course our MD refused) then the worst of the worst, he had this habit of chewing his food loudly when he's eating something he likes.
One time our operations manager (she was pregnant XD) screamed at him from her desk " RAYAAAAN SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH I CAN HEAR IT FROM HERE DAMN IT"
He literally spilled some of the food he was chewing on his desk and I burst out laughing like crazy.
On the same day our MD told us to follow a new "no food in office" policy 😂😂😂
Sad story is that when he left the company I had to revert his PC to how it was including resetting the keyboard layout to default, remember his "foot mouse" ? Well he had to modify the mouse settings so all directions were inverted.
The first thing I said when I turned on his laptop was
FUCK YOU RAYAN!!3 -
Yesterday,
I was a bit drunk.
But I wanted to improve security of the company. So, I went in Azure and activated “Security defaults” which forces MFA for all users in the company. (Because RH always forget to enable MFA for new employees, and I actually care about security)
Then I went in office 365 management and instead of resetting MFA for all users (Forcing everyone to redo MFA setup), I (by mistake) clicked on reset all passwords.
I tested my own account it was fine and went to sleep.
Got a call from CEO at 7am, all 30 employees cannot login in, cannot work.
What a shit show I made…
I have a call with CEO in about 2 hours, I don’t even know how to justify myself…
So children: don’t activate company wide options while drunk. Ever.23 -

Okay lets write this before i go mad...
I'm one of those guys who says "use the os which suits you the most, or you're most familiar with", and i'v always been a windows guy, didn't really have any reason to use linux, because for school stuff, or programming (java and android and c) windows was great enough...
BUT MOTHERF@CKERS at microsoft, i'v had enough...
First my handheld computer goes nuts, because windows is eating 80% of processor, and if i fix it, then some other kind of windows related thing eats up that much, and you know what? I've been okay with that, because thats only a handheld computer, but boy, didn't my main computer start to do the same?!?
I cannot do anything, basically i start something trivial up (by trivial i mean trivial, like idk, a texteditor not even a browser, or an ide or anything that would take a bit of more ram) and my computer cant do shit....
I'm so mad.... Currently installing elemantary os... F@ck this shit i'm out...
(And lets not forget the hours of 'updates' which dont do shit....)13 -
The client requested an ability to create reports in the app I had been working on. It was completed to their specification and they were happy with it for about a week.
Then, they asked me to redo the report, changing various components around so I told them it can be done, but is time consuming because they're essentially asking for a completely different report.
Now, they never even looked at the code before and the extent of their coding knowledge is excel formulas. Their repond to me was "it's easy, just reverse the loop."
I simply did not know how to respond. "Just reverse the loop." ...I mean it's so simple, just reverse the loop... It doesn't matter that I've spent a good amount of time on this already, or that the client have never seen the code, doesn't understand coding, doesn't care about programming, none of that matter. ...just...reverse...the...loop...6 -
Sooo win has updated itself (in a short 6 hours) and I was wondering what eats my pocket pc's 4 gb ram, so i checked, and turns out system is eating 40-50% of it and its processor ever since the update... *Sigh* Awesome....

Have you ever felt that you're being overrated by your employer ?
For our front end projects we use Cloud9 IDE
Now the business have around 100k+ files.
So Cloud9 is becoming slower and slower with every new project created.
So I was tasked to build a code editor where a new instance of that code editor will be created per project ( so, the new editor doesn't need to handle a huge file tree), so I "git clone" ACE editor and add to it GoldenLayout.js , FancyTree.js and some other plugins.
Now they think I'm a genius, and I'm like ... Eh? Should I tell them.. ? Will it backfire later ?
I kinda like the feeling.
What's the best thing to do in this case?3 -

I'm disappointed with my boss.
I've always felt that the company I work for was different, I'm a web dev in a foreign country, finding a job as a fresh graduate wasn't easy at all.
before joining this company, all the employers I've met expected so many skills from foreigners like me, while they sat the bar so low for local fresh grad candidates.
Except my current boss, after the second interview he said that he believes in my potential and he wants to take this risk, the risk of hiring a foreign fresh graduate.
After I joined I worked my ass off and after 9 months I became a team lead.
And my boss said to me that the risk he took was completely worth it and I exceeded expectations.
Now I'm involved in assessing candidates applying for web development role at this company, we have 3 candidates 2 local and 1 foreigner.
Ironically the foreigner proved great potential and understanding of web technologies that exceeds a fresh entry role.
The other 2 local were alright, need training but they pass the criteria for an entry level role.
I reviewed this objectively and urged the same man that hired me to consider hiring the foriegner.
He said no, because of Visa costs and because of the lengthy legal process employers need to go through to hire a foreigner, and asked me to move forward with the 2 locals and not lose them to another company.
I felt that, if i were in the foriegner candidate's shoes I would've felt that there's something wrong with me for that no one wants to hire me for my skills and what I've worked hard to achieve was all not enough, it would make me feel like an outcast.
I know that I should do what I'm told, after all he's the employer, but still.. this feeling is bothering me, in a way I feel like I've cheated or I was just lucky and I didn't really earn this job.4 -
An intern fell asleep during a tech presentation. My boss confronted him and said that it. Wasnt mandatory so if he didn't want to be there he could to upstairs. After the presentation and talked to him and said it was rude and she didn't want to see it again, but no official warming and his school didn't have to know. He was offended by that and jumped on the first bus.
He wasn't allowed to comeback (because he quit by leaving) and he had to redo that year.
Still laughing about that.15 -
*Got a request for installing and configuring an online shop for a client*
Me: Do you have a web space already?
Client: No, I don't want to pay for it. (FYI: They only cost about 20€ a year)
Me: Okay, but free hosters are often slow and unprofessional. I really do not recommend using free hosting services.
Client: Doesn't matter, do it.
Me: *Working on the shop for several weeks, finally goes online*
One week later, client contacts me saying shop is offline. I realize the free hoster he used shut down their services (bankruptcy), resulting in the loss of about 90% of the work that I had done (no proper backups due to complexity)
Client: How can that even happen? You'll redo the shop, right?

Me, in a meeting with CTO trying to sort out some config stuff, manager messages me and tells me about a non critical issue (read: not production).
Me: I'm in a meeting
Manager: Yes but look at this when you have time
Me: Yes sure
Manager calls me after 15 minutes
Me: I was in a meeting?
Manager: Are you still in a meeting or were you in a meeting?
Me: I'll go back to the meeting when you're done
Manager tells me about the issue again. After I go back to the meeting manager sends me a meeting link about the issue literally 15 minutes from that time. Manager is 10 minutes late to the meeting he just arranged.
After the meeting manager pesters me and asks if I could figure out the issue every 15 minutes.

After creating a logo *for free* for a client who I thought was a friend, they started getting really ungrateful and demanded me to do things in a not very calm way ("DO THIS", "DO THIS RIGHT NOW") (yes, it was actually in caps). I kindly asked them to stop using the graphics while informing them that the license used didn't let me actually force them to remove it. After that, they started yelling about how "he'd have to redo all the graphics again". All he did was put the vector logo inside a raster circle and change the font. Yes, he really did convert vector graphics to raster and didn't use the originals at all. Not only this, but he also used *aliased* raster images.
He ended up using them anyway, informing me in a cheeky way after being kicked out of a group chat (which I wasn't even the moderator of). See the picture attached for how he did that, red is the client, orange is the moderator who banned him.
TL;DR: Don't do free stuff, regardless of how bad you think your skills are.9 -

This rant is aimed towards those who hate on JavaScript developers and the JS language:
Dear Asshole,
I am a JavaScript developer by choice.
I think JavaScript is great.
I agree that JavaScript have some bad sides to it, but I believe that the community is driving good change to the ecosystem.
I appreciate other models of other languages.
I do not include 3rd party NPM modules without checking their source and credibility.
I will not use a framework (i.e. react, Vue, Anguler) if it's not needed.
And finally:
I can do any software engineering tasks a software engineer is supposed to do.
Kind regards,
Nedo-the-angry.18 -
I’m updating my résumé, and want to redo it from scratch — I’ve just been migrating the same document between OpenOffice (and later LibreOffice) versions for 15+ years, so it’s pretty buggy now.
As I’m redoing it from scratch anyway, does anyone have any suggestions on what I should build it in/with instead? Is there anything that works particularly well?
I’ve been considering learning and using Latex, but I’m not sure.30 -

Over the past few years I've tried to start learning JavaScript, only to become annoyed and move on. In my latest effort, I finally hit that "aha!" milestone. Turns out that the tutorial books and videos everybody said we're the ideal way to learn weren't so ideal for me. What ended up working:
1. Find a project tutorial.
2. Understand maybe 5% of what I'm doing.
3. Alter the project, ultimately breaking it.
4. Spend the few hours Googling.
5. Scrap it.
6. Redo it, exactly the same. It works this time.
7. Bask in my glory. For I am a JavaScript master.
I'll get there eventually. I think.5 -
A close friend of mine is in his third term in university studying software engineering, asked me how did I land my first job so quickly after graduation.
His question made me stop for few seconds and ask myself, how would my life would've been without Coursera , Udacity, codeacademy and css-tricks.
I literally spent 2 years wasting time in uni then I discovered these sites and started learning while studying just enough to pass subjects that really has no benefit for the future whatsoever.
Even with subjects like data structures and AI, which should be interesting, it was 40℅ theory and the practical part was to complement the theory part, it was never for real world examples.
Kinda feel bad for my friend because he'll end up feeling the same frustration I went through at university.
Even now a year after graduating I feel that the only benefit of my degree was legal.
When would this silly system change ? If university courses can be specialized like online courses wouldn't it bring better talent to the market? And why governments don't take action towards this?2 -

I worked late last night to finish a project with an incoming deadline, and for what? That's right, for fucking nothing. Hours wasted. Just because I was told the form was to be submitted to an endpoint that I would receive later on.
Turns out that what I actually need to do is embed some form from a third-party service. So the form that I already implemented (with styles and logic) isn't needed. What's worst, I have to redo all the styles to match this embed form.
Thank you so much for that. 🖕Never again will I work late. I should have known better by now... -

My development process seems to go:
1. Write code
2. Believe that said code is amazing
3. Write more code
4. Revisit earlier code and start to doubt it's amazing-ness
5. Get frustrated that it could be done better
6. Redo 1 and repeat cycle
Seems a massive waste of time but I tend to like taking a different approach as soon as I find I'm getting stuck with the previous one.
I then get encouraged to take the quick/easy approach which seems like a backwards step and not worthwhile because I know it won't be as fast/efficient.2 -

Look up tutorials -> see that Python is a popular tool for ML -> install Python -> pip install scipy -> breaks with some weird error involving BLAS library code -> spend half an hour fixing it -> try installing Theano -> breaks because my USERNAME HAS A SPACE IN IT LIKE SERIOUSLY? WTF -> make new account without a space in the name -> repeat till Theano -> run tests, found out that I didn't install CUDA support -> scrap the install and redo with CUDA support -> CUDA libraries take forever to download on shitty internet -> run tests -> breaks with some weird Theano compiler error -> go crying to friend -> friend tells me about Anaconda -> scrap the previous install and download Anaconda over shitty connection -> mess up conda environments because noobishness -> scrap, retry -> YESS I FINALLY GOT IT WORKING TIME TO DO SOME LEARNI-crap it's 4 in the morning already.

I was a wee little front-end devloper for a really small dev shop. The lead devloper, who was also the only back-end developer decided to quit. The company was in the middle of a huge project with Rolls-Royce aerospace. I managed to learn ColdFusion and release the application in only a few months. It was basically a giant warranty management application for jet engines. This is one app I wish I can go back and redo because if I had the expierence then that I do now... I feel like it would be so much better. That application allowed me to advance in my career, and 5 years later, I'm working for one of the largest development companies. -

Hello devRant, this is going to be my first time posting on the site.
I work for a gaming community on the side, and today one of the managers asked me to implement a blacklist system into the chat and reactivate the previously existing one temporarily. This shouldn't have had any issues and should've been implemented within minutes. Once it was done and tested, I pushed it to the main server. This is the moment I found out the previous developer apparently decided it would be the best idea to use the internal function that verifies that the sender isn't blacklisted or using any blacklisted words as a logger for the server/panel, even though there is another internal function that does all the logging plus it's more detailed than the verification one he used. But the panel he designed to access and log all of this, always expects the response to be true, so if it returns false it would break the addon used to send details to the panel which would break the server. The only way to get around it is by removing the entire panel, but then they lose access to the details not logged to the server.
May not have explained this the best, but the way it is designed is just completely screwed up and just really needs a full redo, but the managers don't want to redo do it since apparently, this is the best way it can be done.7 -

How the fuck there are so many full stack developers who lack shit tons of knowledge in both specialties! And worst of those are asp.net "FULLSTACK DEVS" that can't write JavaScript without copying and pasting from SO and don't know that display flex is a thing!14 -
When you install a new OS on your machine and when you're finally done you make a stupid mistake...
and BOOM!
easiest way to fix the outcome is to redo the OS again... -
I am building my first android app and the hardest part is learning that ctrl + y doesn't redo an undo, but instead it deletes the current line2

My bet is that they'll redo it all in PowerPoint. Or fire me. Latter is the lessor of two evils.2 -

Build an app that would tell you about all the news that mainstream media doesn't want to cover, like what's happening in parts of Africa, the enslaved workers in the far East and the situation of the Syrian and Iraqi lands under siege.
Then follows it with a cute baby/puppy/kitten video so you don't end up looking at the "empty half of the cup"1 -

I see your trying to Undo your work! That's great.
Oh now you're trying to redo...
I'm sorry... I just deleted that important line of code. I'm sure it will be ok though.6 -
Not dev related.
I am fucking tired of the house buying process in the England. Honestly it is such shambles that I don't think I have ever encountered anything like this. Nothing is ever predictable, everything and everone works at random timescale and nobody gives a fuck of you as a buyer even if you are paying crazy money. Apparently we are meant to be moving next Monday but contracts haven't been exchanged, my mortgage broker gave incorrect solicitors details to the bank so they are having to redo some paperwork, the buyer of our current place has not responded for last week to confirm the date, the seller we are buying from has been jumping up and down to exchange and here I am with no certainty.
My anxiety and frustration levels are through the roof for last 10 days. I can't wait for it all to be over. I don't think I am ever buying another house unless the process changes. Just needed to vent my frustration somewhere5 -
One of our customers asked us (a while back) to create a nice interface for their label printer (preferably integrated in their web cms)
So we started developing and after two weeks (we were almost done) they canceled the request, payed for the worked ours and said that another company was willing to do it faster (even though we were almost done)
So that was about half a year ago, meanwhile I've migrated to Ubuntu
Today I heard we have to do it again because the other 'faster' company wasn't faster, and didn't live up to the expectations
I do not have the code anymore... My colleagues also do not have the code anymore... It was removed to keep our coded clean, not sure if it's on git (the guy who workers on the part that's has a repo doesn't always commits...)
I've worked on on a standard node js script (which I didn't create a repo for because the project was canceled)
... Amazing4 -

As a web dev i really hate half assed solutions
Especially when I'm forced to spend time making them because some stupid sales person sold certain features that our current product doesn't support.
At the end of the day that sales guy gets a commission and I build something that will inevitably break somewhere in the future.1 -
Fuck unreasonable deadlines. Just do your stuff as if you have the time of the world. Stop compromising the quality of your work and things are going to be done when they're done. Good quality stuff that's worth the wait.
I started to tell this to myself this week. For months now I took the bait that everything is urgent. And whatever crap management want has to be done yesterday. But.... Well... They pushed it too effing far.
Redo this module that took the former team about six months to finish. You have 10 days.
Well... What? Everyone is saying yes?... Everyone going full code monkey making no progress?
This is the moment I stop compromising and stop listening to your suggestions. I am going to do what I know how to do, the way I know it works, and I will not cut one corner based off your suggestions. I'm sorry, I've been dealing with this shit for too long already, and I don't want to suffer the consequences of degrading the quality of what I write anymore.5 -
Client A
At the first few meetings, told us they are giving sponsors to World Cup 2018 and we should totally talk about it loudly on media.
Then when we submitted our plan, they said things have changed and they no longer can mention about World Cup. We had to redo everything.
Now, they blame us that our service quality is so bad that we should learn from *some refernce* company. Said company is only talking about their sponsorship for World Cup.

Client B
Bought smallest package from us. Demand services greater than our largest package.
Gave us an information of a name spelled in "Barbu". We used that spelling and used it for various tasks in past few weeks. All approved by client.
Blamed us we are giving such a poor service that we cannot even spell "Babu" correctly this morning.1 -
Reviewing code for applications after not working on it for six months.
Client: so what is the first step to adding our new feature.
Me: I really think we need to redo the entire architecture from the ground up. It won't work any differently than it does now, but the code will be cleaner.
Client:😓

So I just bought my new laptop and I'm thinking "Forget about Arch. I don't have time to waste now. Let's just install Debian and save time for important tasks I have. Why should I redo everything that is done, while I have enough undone jobs already."
2 days later, at last I managed to install nvidia hybrid drivers and get it to work successfully. Now I just have to find out the cause of the black screen I get when it recovers from suspend.7 -
It's upsetting to work on something, spend my time and mind on it, for someone to just undo it. The worst part is that i think i'll have to redo it next week.5

A client asked me to include a GA tracking code into her website,

serious question - is a fucking project ever finished and put away or is it common in the dev world to redo the same fucking pointless shit over and over again?4

WTF IS WRONG WITH ASSEMBLY LANGUAGE?!
I was just modifying an existing program for adding a sequence of numbers from the data section and through console input. I studied the code and started modifying it one step at a time. I needed to modify it into a multiplication program. So I started by changing the ADD functions, replaced the result and buffer registers with bigger size and thought I completed it. WELL GUESS WHAT? SHIT JUST GIVES ME SEGMENTATION FAULT! NOW I HAVE TO REDO THE WHOLE THING! WHY DOESN'T IT TELL ME WHICH LINE OF THE CODE I FUCKED UP AT?! STUPID NASM COMPILER.9 -

Most of 2020 was a bad dev experience for me. I was paid to remake a system because it was
a ) insecure
b ) inconsistent
c ) hard to mantain (spaghetti code)
I thought I could focus on the backend and just reuse the front end but even that was unusable.
Basically had to redo it from scratch and since I made the fatal mistake of letting THEM estimate how long it would take, I worked most of the year instead of just 2-3 months.
Never again. After being done with the project I still had to be 'reachable' for the coming weeks if anything happened.
I turned off my phone during one weekend and then the next thing I know the only other dev at that small company is asking me for details on the project (meaning they just decided to offload everything to him). Never heard from them again and I'm hoping that won't change.
Beware small dev companies with less than 5 actual devs.
Best: Dev wise this year has been bad or not-bad but nothing 'great' comes to mind.
My fun times and enjoyments were not derived from dev activities.1 -
I'm so lucky.
I have been working off of my usb recently, and been programming something. I had maybe 20 changes I needed to make (some werent big, they were just ui changes, but some needed a new column to be added to a database).
After I had done most of it, and had maybe 4/5 left I started getting this really bad feeling I was going to lose my USB.
I decided to ignore the feeling and just work on it in my next 2 breaks, and when I finally finished it, I uploaded the code to github.
That was yesterday at about 1:20.
This morning I check my bag and my USB is not there.
Holy shit was I lucky, if I hadn't finished my project I would have lost that progress and need to redo it all by tomorrow.
Tldr: I had a feeling I would lose a USB I was working off, but didnt upload my code until I was finished. Haven't seen the USB since uploading the code.2 -
Was on a trip, a holiday of sorts but there was a conference. Turns out alcohol and no sleep turns me into not only a master of code but negotiations as well. Woke up to find all of my work (that I had been procrastinating for about a week) was all done, my contract was extended and I got accept for a higher hourly rate.
ps: I had to redo most of it. Drunk me is not someone you wanna pair program with. -
It's important to redo old projects and ideas, here is why:
I worked on a project about 6 months ago, it was mostly just a "coding challenge" and I worked on the project for 3 days and I didn't get it to work. But I started working on the project again from scratch 2 days ago and I got it to work this time!
The moral of this story:
Just making new projects makes it hard to see how much you've grown and improved. But redoing old projects (even if they worked) gives you a concrete representation on how much you've improved (and if you have at all😉)3 -
MRW a client wants to redo a feature on a program I'd been working on for an entire month, and expects it done in an week because "it should be easy for you to do"

So I am only 15 and I am trying to find local businesses that will allow me to either build them a website or let me redo their current website.
Doesnt sound thay complicated right? I have gotten to do it once, for a laid back coffee shop owner whos business went out of business a day after i emailed him about it being done. I mean how the hell does that even happen!
I have tried different types of emails and shown all of my work, which it is all good sites that look professional. Issue is alot of people dont trust email offers or dont trust me cause im 15. I am not much of a person who can walk into a store and talk to the owner about it, i am not social in that aspect.
So anyone have any ideas?5 -

had to redo my company's entry form, for some reason (some reason being their databases are all redundant and no one talks to each other).
was filing the form and had to attach a file, and the form reset 😑
not just that, but the form also asked for my birthday, my age and my age group, separately, and instead of having a dropdown to select my state, there was a radio buttons list 🤦♀️
i seriously wanna punch whoever did that form, honestly2 -

Im a junior android dev working in a startup. Wasted whole week on trying to parse some retarded json data generated by junior backend guy.
Im talking about objects with other objects as their elements, no use of arrays.
In the end had to redo his data in proper order so I could parse properly. Fkin waste of time.
At least now I know how to do his work, and won't be afraid to confront him with detailed criticism.2 -
I overhauled an entire program, and everyone is really happy with the results. But the best part, I predicted that it would take 2 months to complete, and then I completed it in two months.
The overhaul was a beast, mind you; swimming through backend spaghetti code and having to redo the entire front end was tiresome, but I'm happy with the results.
More importantly, i'm really happy that people are no longer complaining about crashes. Our original program suffered from some really horrible crashes; some crashes that couldn't even be explained by stackoverflow. Whatever I did during the overhaul corrected for these weird errors.
Time to celebrate. Before more minor bugs are found by users. (i.e. Universe always makes a better idiot) -
Last year I wrote a sudoku program which did solve easy sudokus but messed up on harder ones. I had got bored after a bit and forgot about it until today I thought I'd rewrite it using new stuff I've learned since and make it work properly.
So I opened it up and look and I'm like 'WHAT!?' because I don't understand what I wrote. After a bit I start to get the idea and see that it was kind of smart even if long and complicated.
If anything, it shows how much my documentation skills have improved.
Now I just have to work out how to redo it in a way I understand.7 -
That's funny how as a student in apprenticeship, hating front-end and wanting to do backend for the rest of my life, I currently assigned to redo the entire front of a website by adding bootstrap and stuff. I'm doing this for a week and it bores me so much...2

This is the LAST TIME a critical PC component will fail me in the middle of a project. Wtf is up with hardware makers these days? Why can't you make a video card that will last for more than a year, AMD?? FFS!

A brilliant oldtimer auto-mechanic asked me to get Audi MMI and maps update for him from the internet. For the Christmas, you know..
So I found the source (mega.nz). It's 22.3GB.
Spent a whole day downloading it (5GB download allowed in 6 hours for free tier), downloaded 21.15GB and some fucked up error appeared "Your In-Browser Storage for Mega is Full".
Couldn't work out the reason nor the fix to recover and complete the already downloaded data. Had to redo it all.
Whole day wasted

In several occasions I run rm -rf * in the wrong folder (or wrong server!!).
No big deal so far, but I had to spent more time to redo my work since Linux has no fucking recycle bin like Win!
So I created this helper function to give my brain a few seconds to think before my finger hit Enter.
delete_all_files()

We are using a shitty language and a even more shitty IDE at our company for our software.
I'm quite new to this, so I don't know all sorta stuff.
Was writing an addition to a convertion from an old system to a new one.
Needed to "Map" Strings to IDs, so I used a switch case to determine the needed IDs.
Because that fuckin horseshit has no realtime errors (just at compile time...) I didn't realize that there is no such thing as strings in switch case in this language.
So I wrote this whole fuckin shit and when I compiled I got massive list of errors.
So I had to redo that shit with If, Else If... And that motherfucker just crashed on me...
HOLY SHIT...7 -

I used to be at a company where it was kind of expected that you worked long days, which made it quite difficult to balance work and private life. It got so out of control that I was even called to work while I was on my holiday. At first I started with shutting off my phone after work hours, but the real solution I found was moving away from that company.
Pretty much everyone at my new company just stops working when the clock hits 4 or 5 pm unless there is something critical that needs to be done. Seeing that also discourages me (and everyone else) from working long days. We are also quite open about our workload so if anyone thinks they’re overwhelmed they can find a relevant person to talk to and eventually a solution is found. The salary isn’t incredible, but the work/life balance and the benefits I get are just way better than getting paid more and living to work.
I think a lot of people go for the high salaries, most of the time disregarding the other part of the equation. If the company has a meh work culture with low regard to employees’ work/life balance, there isn’t much the employee can do besides finding a place to work with better wlb. I’d pick a great work/life balance and peace of mind to a high salary any day.1 -

Not just that but the co founder decided to assign one of my team members to another project!!!
I've worked today till 4am.

Finishing my degree after moving to a foreign country alone, while also working as a dev part time.

Do you guys also feel annoyed when someone calls you during work hours out of the blue before asking if you're available? I just lose all my concentration

I need help!
This is gonna be a long question/story.
I'm a Syrian based in Malaysia working as a lead web dev in a good company.
I have a friend in trouble and I want to help him.
Here's a summary:
My friend is a project manager at a gaming studio he happens to be an Iranian atheist with around 2 years of experience in the game making industry.
He worked on and delivered a couple AAA games at his current place of employment as a project manager in one of the teams that made those games.
He stood up for his team when the management was overworking team till after midnight sometimes and forcing them to work on weekends without any tangible compensations ( basically they gave them things like free lunches, movie tickets, etc).
The result of his standing up to his team was the management handing him a notice telling him that he'll be fired within 2 months due to "underperforming".
This was a month and a half ago.
He looked around in Malaysia for a job that can get him a working visa, but his niche background couldn't help.
After his termination in few weeks he can extend his stay at Malaysia for approximately 2 - 3 months.
Now the reason why I mentioned that he's an "Iranian atheist" is the fun part of this story (sarcasm), Iranian government considers him as an "infidel" and he's banned from Iran.
His Iranian passport can't get him anywhere where he can make a living.
So basically he has close to no options.
Now to where I come into all of this:
I want to help him.
I'm going to dedicate my free time for the next 2 - 3 months teaching him web development, the problem is, I don't know how to teach web development in such a short time, in fact I've never taught anyone programming from scratch.
If he can show promising results I know that I can make a case for him get him a position in the company I work for.
I already convinced him today to try and learn web development because I can tell that in Malaysia there's always demand on good web developers.
Now to my request:
how can I best teach web development to someone with no programming background ? I'm thinking about teaching him front end development, so: HTML, CSS/SASS and JavaScript. maybe react js as well if possible ( high demand is usually on React/ Angular front end developers)
Did anyone here teach programming to someone else before?
Did anyone here learn web development in such a short time?
If you've read all this... Thank you :)17 -
So, I've decided I'm going to completely redo my Discord Bot. I will probably still use Node.js to program it, but I haven't 100% decided yet. If I do use Node.js, I will probably end up using a different Discord API wrapper for it. I also don't know what I'm going to call the bot. NoVegBot 2.0 sounds too boring, but idk.2

Worst architecture: the stack compiler I wrote. I basically just made my own shitty webpack.
The idea was simple: Babel to minified JS, Scss to minified CSS, and HTML to minified HTML. Made in Node JS, of course. (perhaps that’s where I went wrong!)
The thing works... and I use it... but boy is it bad. It even broke on my current project (which is for a client so...) and I’m having to work around my own god damn code.
I really need to revisit it and redo it.1 -
Got my first job in a web development company. I am on a trial period, which means at the end of two weeks they will evaluate my performance and give me a full time contact. As a trial I am given task to work on internal CMS system. And OMG!! the coding is horrible. I think someone can start from scratch and redo the entire thing faster the adding new features to that piece of Hell!! Am worried after 2 weeks my performance is going to look bad.10

Landed my first time job as an consultant, while still studying. Hopefully this will go good, only have 4 months left of university.
However, I am surprised of how little coding it actually is... I've been spending my first month just learning a new system, so I can finally go out to a big customer and redo their production system (factories).
Meetings all day, a lot of talking... I kind of dislike it, but also like it. It is a special feeling. I wonder how it will feel in 6 months from now. -
In previous company I was a backend developer. All the frontend ones were on vacation so it was up me to redo the whole frontend because of design chance. So i thought it couldn't be that bad. Little did i know was that designs were just jpg files with no info about margins or font sizes or anything really and everything was supposed to be pixel perfect. Fuck. That. Place.

I'm so fucking done with this shit. If someone forgets every git command every single fucking tim le is ok to ask. Every time someone asks advice on how to write a fucking retarded workaround (out of lazyness, because fixing their own code is too much to ask), it'a ok.
The *ONE* fucking time i ask the name of the fucking function to generate a filter via code using their fucking cms? "you should do that via gui!" "who cares if there'll be conficts with git, just manually redo everything in production!".
God fucking dammit how can you even have the balls to complain about terrible planning and stuff not working if that's your fucking mantra?!2 -
Context: ive been porting a single threaded D.A.G scheduler into a lockless multithreaded one. Point is its an objectively complicated project where theres lots of overlap in the code and architectural boundaries are very fuzzy.
My boss: "Can you just make new branches for every 'large' change youve done. Its too hard to merge this one giant branch youve got"
Me: "Fuck bro, but this is 2 months worth of significant refactoring where the commits are not atomic and you told me way back then that it was cool to work in my own repo. Now ive got to go redo half my work"
Boss: "Well yea but isnt it so much better to work with clearly seperated histories"
Me: "yea its great if you tell me thats the workflow you want upfront. This is gonna suck but ill but my balls and dive into this pit of lava if u say." -
A junior front end developer colleage of mine doesn't know the meaning of aspect ratio and doesn't understand why he needs to understand it or why is it important for responsive designs.3

I got to work on this project written in PHP that is literally unsalvageable so I will need to redo it from scratch, it's an e-commerce/social network mix that allows you to resell your clothes and I will have to work with PHP-only server-side so I was looking for a JS framework that has all these cool features like Angular but does not require node.js and I stumbled upon React and Vue and I can't decide between them. I was wondering if anyone knows both of these frameworks and could help me decide which one to use. (I have almost no knowledge about these frameworks)
PS: The server-side will be PHP with MySQL because that's the only option that the client's hosting offers.7 -
Yesterday we had the second meeting with the commissioning agency and the client itself.
The project is a sort of CRM that allows to book for medical treatments (not gonna go into boring details)
At the end, we just ask the client if everything was clear enough to start using it (the manual has yet to be done) and she just answers "yeah, I'll just have to try out a few things and then everything will be totally clear, but right now I think I got this"
Literally 2 hours later, she calls us telling to prepare another meeting because she doesn't understand the very basics of the whole project.
So now I'll probably have to redo an awful lot of shit just to make her understand what she actually wants5 -
tldr; Fuck Windows networks
I do some first level support for a befriended architect when i got some sparetime after regular work. Its nice and easy extra cash most of the times but not today.
We decided to ditch the money thiving IT admin that did not care about doing his work. And instead of taking over his pile of shit i adviced to redo the whole network, drop the massive server that did idle 99% of the day and update all PCs some of them did still run IE8 and had no active anti virus, yeah that dude was real shit.
Anyways i proceded with the whole process today and everything worked expect the fucking windows network, that fucking domain controller setup blocked the fucking internetconnection even though DNS and DHCP where set up correctly. Why does fucking ms need to make it so difficult to set up fucking network accounts....
I will have to finish this shit up tomorrow and this on a weekend...2 -
Am I the only dev who need to git commit && git push everytime I've done more than I would like to redo in case my computer dies?3

Spent 3 hours on SO and google to find out why a listview is missing data. Finally I delete it from form and recreate it, works flawless on first compile.

So I am in a computer science class and we had a project. I was in a group of 3 people and since majority rules we were to make a game. However they have never ever done any ui work ever. So I was in charge of coding the entire game. And since they did not know how to use git we had to use Google drive to transfer code. But ling sorry short I switched on them and got an A and they had to redo it on their own.

That moment where you find how to do it in the docs
But you had passed that section 3-4 6 times
But you had already formulated your own fix
And you have to redo that code block -
Ah a Monday rant. How wonderful a day.
I cleared a project with my boss how dynamic each section on a frontpage should be. This and this needs to be dynamic on each page load. All in the beginning of the project.
Now in the end, he changes his opinion by writing to me in Slack. "Remember, that this section needs to automatically draw X from this other page."
Now I have to redo it, since I made it as static content since that is what was asked of me. Now he blames me for why I never did it correctly in the first place.

A senior front end developer with 8 years of experience asked me today what does 'this' refer to in a function() inside of a property in an object, and why it doesn't work outside of the function!
I wanted to shout FUCK MY LIFE! But I held myself and explained it to her.
Worst part is I still don't qualify for 'senior' in my job title (less than 3 years of experience), hence my lower pay.5 -

Couple of weeks ago I received a negative response about a code test I did for a front and position. They only said I was not a good fit.
Today, I received another email from them, asking me to do a test. I asked for clarification, and they said they are giving me a chance to redo the test.
Sounds weird, but I'll redo the test anyway. The task is to code a responsive page that consume an api. I'm using vue, sass, git, modular and semantic code. What else should I focus?
The deadline is in 36h.1 -

Ok please guys I need a little help here.
So I'm in my second year of my Computer science course and all subjects except one went well.So I failed my first year maths module so I decided to redo it and study much harder.Low and behold I worked really hard towards passing the exam but it was still extremely difficult. So I haven't gotten my mark and all but if I do fail it again I will not be able to continue in this University.I do not have a plan B at all and I really don't know what to do.I live in South Africa(if that's relevant). So basically if I pass I'll continue with the course but the question is what do I do if I don't pass.should I start working or try another degree at another University which will be another 4 years.PS I'm heading for 20 years old in a few weeks time.I appreciate anyone who gives any feedback.9 -
Three hour meeting attempting to explain that the specs I received weren't clear, and that the calcs I was given weren't consistent with the rest of the reports we built.
End result: BA said he was right. I coded to spec. Told me finished report was all wrong and I had to redo it. -
I just really want to pluck my eyes out...
My sister is abroad for a music festival where she is attending as a speaker.
Her speech got almost ready at the last moment. The slideshow presentation was sloppy cause she gave some half-assed points to put. I saved the files (PDF and PPT) on her laptop and on her USB stick, I didn't keep any copies for me. She rehearsed her speech and I added some more points to enrich it and fill a bit more time. When she got there, she messaged me if it was possible to add those extra points to the presentation. I asked her to e-mail me the new points and the presentation on time (which it didn't happen), expecting a file attached to the e-mail. And guess what:
SHE FREAKIN' TYPED EVERYTHING EXCEPT OF THE TITLE!!!
AND NOW I HAVE TO REDO THE WHOLE PRESENTATION!!!
I can't facepalm myself hard enough to hop onto another universe... -
Client is a group of designers and asks for a website reskin, we made the previous one.
They spend like 4 months fixing up their design and after they're done, we developer look at it and decide what can be done and what can't be done and we go on like this for a few days.
At the end, I begin the development of the website, the data structure is already done, it's there and it's working.
The design is there, we all asked to not modify ANYTHING about it.
After I finish making the website, which is kinda unusable bc of the UI, they decide to completely redo the about page (which took like 3 days to get done)
After all it's done they just say "ok, now we gotta just add animations and transitions between all of the pages"
It took like 3 months to finish...
Is it too hard for clients to actually have a specific idea on what they want to do? -
In a e-commerce project my client asked for tax calculation with static some x value all the time.
Me: As promised your site is live and please check it.
Client: Checks everything. I want this tax to be dynamic.
Me: That was not mentioned earlier. Now I need to redo the design which takes much time.
Client: You will just change the addition at the end then what's with the design change.
Me: ( I killed him already in my mind)

Hey all,
Need some ReactJS help:
So I was able to redo a browser extension project to fit my needs for my browser proxy project, however for some reason, the original source code doesn't seem to know the Setup class for the setup page. Devrant keeps crashing on iOS and I’m getting really sick of it. It’s been at least 6 months like this.

My company used to just let anyone write code for our customers. Now I am the official development department. I knew someone wrote something very similar to a new request I got from a customer, so I requested his code because I didn't want to rewrite everything. After seeing the code I changed my mind and I want to redo it from scratch.

How do y'all read programming books? Do you try to memorize them, redo all the examples on your machine or read them quickly just to pick up the most important points and to remember where to look if additional informations are needed in future?
Nowadays I always use the last strategy otherwise reading a single book would take me a year but I'm curious to know if I'm the only one.8 -
Small rant:
Spent a week or so setting up CI/CD for all our repos.
Next week: were migrating to a new git service and need to redo it all.
I've actually really enjoyed it though so I cant complain too much -
Doing client work can really be a pain in the ass. Especially clients, describing something very specifically (e.g. "I want my customers to have a menu like PRESS 1 FOR SALES when calling our business number"), and when given the name ("so, an IVR-system?"), discarding the solution, just because they didn't know what it was called.
I hate working with idiots.1 -
Previous version of our web app. It was a prototype that have overgrown its use.
I am the only dev, but I have started to redo the whole thing over again one at a time. Thanks to @devRant and other groups I joined, I learnt A WHOLE LOT of things and I am applying them daily. -
Did anyone here use sapper and svelte to build a production application? How was the experience overall?
I've been reading about it and watched Rich Harris present svelte and sapper, I like his approach but I'm not too sure about how it work in a production workflow1 -
When the designer uses a react component in the design and we have to convert to vanilla or redo..2

I love being a consultant, and I love my job. However, I’ve been working with this client for the past few months and the past few weeks have been so draining. 90% of the people at the client’s side are super nice people, and then there’s this one person that just barks orders at us whenever a tiny thing is broken. Everything is urgent, everything is top priority, and we need to drop whatever we’re doing to fix what they deem urgent. I am currently pretty much the only dev doing both support and feature development at the same time and I am getting mentally very tired.
Whenever something is broken we get shit feedback, but for all our efforts there’s never any positive feedback. Mind you, the project isn’t even publicly accessible yet, it’s in a “alpha” phase where there are only a handful of users testing the program.
How do you guys deal with people like this?3 -
My code is in Acceptance Testing phase, and I got a defect reported.

Why the fuck do we have to use an antivirus that is so intrusive that it has so far wasted my time every day, because it thinks that blocking up random ports is okay. Its a fucking lottery every time I turn on the laptop. I wonder if its going to block port 3306 or 4200 tomorrow...5

I'm so sick of having to maintain a 10 year old back-end codebase that is built on a proprietary php framework that isn't documented at all. I am still a student, and I'm left mostly alone to figure things out. It's been a while since I started, but it sucks all the energy out of me to figure out how things are built...
My senior is too busy with other projects so when I ask a question I only get answers hours later, and we work remote. He is so busy that he has to consistently work overtime.
I am so overwhelmed...5 -
Spent 4 hours playing the role of a designer and crafted some great UI and showed my fellow Dev's and we were all in agreement to implement.Eight hours later our lead designer crafts a totally new look that my boss is so into forcing us to redo the app
Lesson learnt keep your lane1 -
So recently, one of my coworkers had some issues with their configurations on Visual Studio : To test our feature, we have a specific setup that I won't describe here. Thing is, it's not a simple localhost. Remember that.
The issue of the configuration was on that feature : they went back on localhost for no reason and couldn't get it back as before. So the testing was different since some uses cases weren't redo-able on their setup.
So my co-worker had that and nothing had done the trick to fix it, so they just left it like that.
Then another one had the problem. And another one, and another one, etc. And I don't.
So what was the problem ? An update that messes up everything in the setup.
A simple internal update. Glad I didn't updated yet. Now I'm the only one in my team (4 people right now) who still has that feature. -
I'm starting to get annoyed with Android Studio. I generally enjoy it as far as an ide goes, but why does it need to update so often??? Seriously it feels like every time I open it I get a notification saying to update something or other.
On a somewhat related note but not actually Android Studio's fault, I have decided that IdeaVim sucks. It's good sometimes, but it can't keep up with my keystrokes, so I end up with random characters in my code because even though I hit "jj" (remapped to ESC) then start typing other commands, I end up with the next command being read as still in insert mode, then it catches up with the escape and pops me back to normal mode. It drives me crazy because then I have to go back and undo the extra characters, then redo my command and it kills my flow. I'm not even that fast of a typist, it shouldn't be that hard to keep up... -
You know that moment when you write a long code, then you undo many times to see something that was before, and when you "ctrl+y".......
Just happened
😒5 -
Two years ago we took over this project which has been a nightmare to maintain. It's a set of netcore 2.1 webapps running on an on-prem windows machine. Everyone who has worked on it so far has quit, leading to two episodes of it being passed on with near zero handover.
Its function is fairly simple, so naturally we have been nagging to redo it and cloudlift it.
I was finally given one week to see how far I'd get, and had a poc running in Azure after one day; 4 apps in clean net6, SSO, and managed identities. The only thing lacking was setting up the authentication for third parties.
And... they still don't want "something new" when the old one works. Back to IIS and debugging windows event logs.1 -
I bought a computer awhile back off Kijiji (Canada's craigslist) for a really good price. Today, decided I was going to upgrade the ram since I got a sick deal on some corsair vengence 8gb sticks online...
And just before installing it, I realize the fucker decided to use low profile RAM in his build for a reason: he (for some fucking reason) decided to route the airflow for the system by placing the cooling fan directly over the first 2 memory slots.
Guess who's 5 minute memory upgrade just turned into an hour of re-routing all the airflow in the PC and having to redo all the fan wiring.
I shouldn't complain, I mean I got this computer a couple years back for like $400, but still, wtf man...4 -
For me Jetbrains idea based IDE/editor in part does just about everything right. Only need to really change the redo shortcut. They provide a warning now so you don't lose your undo history on ctrl+y.
On console both Emacs and vim work for me. These days I prefer vim. Nano will work when I'm a pinch but the lack of undo is really annoying. Especially when the cat walks over the keyboard. You just need start all over unless you can see what he did.
Vim has vertical block so you comment/uncommented stuff real fast. The cange word and change till are also real time savers. Vi is to basic and annoying for me, rather use nano than.
Gedit works great for me when viewing or editting a file real quick.
So yeah the situation dictates what tool suites the best.
Idea is where I can spend my time the entire day so if I had to choice one that would be it. -
I've always thought Gedit (Ubuntu text editing software) doesn't have Redo feature as the shortcut Ctrl + Y didn't work. Just realised it's Shift + Ctrl + Z
Lesson - be humble and look at the provided menu items. -
When you build a custom CMS for a client and they don't even use it... why the hell am I (the dev) entering their content?!
And for fuck's sake... at least give me the right content in the first place instead of having me redo it 3 times!4 -

When I build something new for the first time.
A year ago I discovered PWA (progressive web apps), web workers and service workers, wanted to build something cool, I sat down at 10AM and started digesting every resource I could find, test, make mistakes, try again, then my eyes started to itch I looked at the clock it's already midnight ! -
Constantly changing conventions for everything, like naming and code formatting conventions.
And the worst part is, I do this several times during one project.
Either I have a project with different conventions or I have to redo a lot.
Most of the time I try to do the last and this costs so much time -.-' -
Manager complaining about why things were done in a 'different' (not the manager's) way.
If you bloody define your tickets better, this shouldn't have happened right!?
I wouldn't have to keep chasing you for details EVERY SINGLE F-ING TIME and I probably wouldn't have to redo and undo the same sh*t 4, 5 times2 -
Anyone familiar with Wordpress site migration?
I'm trying to move a client site from my dev server to theirs, seem to do so fine, but all urls still point to my dev domain.
A search and replace plugin was recommended but it doesn't seem to be updating the database references correctly...or at all.
Not sure if anyone would mind lending some insight so I don't have to essentially redo the whole website over :p8 -
I am busy with multiple projects simultaneously, and this... very nice business guy that I've been working with for the past year just decides to send me a message telling me that I should send our sysadmin a message and ask why he can't login to our ticketing system... You have him in your contacts, I'm not your fucking butler holy shit...
For context, I rarely ever work together with the sysadmin, and he's quite easy to reach1 -
I feel really lost in neural network theory.
the mnist sample made sense, but now I'm looking at Gans and CNN's.. and now all of a sudden I'm lost.
True also are the examples I'm finding of something I know I was able to get to work when more at peace once upon a time called wavenet for text to speech.
I used the Onyx model however which was very easy to implement, but I quickly get lost looking at the tensorflow and pytorch code, even though it is very short I feel intimidated.
The ssd mobilenet documentation also is pretty straightforward, but when I look for wavenet information about providing input in what format and interpreting output I'm having some trouble.
Its frustrating.
I'm tense, I'm poorly rested, I'm sick of having to redo crap and I'm surrounded by people who make me hypervigilant, skin crawly and tense.
How to overcome these things when I'm not at peace at all ?
I don't know. Pushing through it isn't compatable with the mindset I've been forced into.5 -
Thought it had been a while since my last Arch redo. Now the fsck output is hundreds of pages long and I'm grateful for my backups, and all suspiciously occuring just seconds after a full upgrade. I guess hardware failure is a possibility, but the smart status on the drive says it's perfect and dozens of retrospective self tests didn't reveal any issues. RAM passed multiple tests as well. Oh well, not like I haven't reinstalled before.

PO writes a story. We groom it. Point it. Do the work. Finish the work. Dev test it. Push it to test. Tester find a weird edge case. Talks to me. I agree it’s weird. I talk to PO and the PM in the standup. PO realizes the whole business flow doesn’t make any sense. Changes the AC. Asks us to change/redo shit. 2 days until the end of the sprint.
I guess I’m working this weekend. Not that I have to go anywhere 🤷🏽♂️4 -
Me, an apprentice, got to contribute towards a project for the business.
I only have access to the git of that particular project, no access to the other projects, databases or sourcecodes.
Thing is, we basically have to redo an old programm to access and work with the database, so having access to the sourcecode of that or access to the database would be very very helpful.
I have to guess the attributenames of the tables and what the code looked like that assembled all the data together for the overview.
I feel incredibly unprepared for this. -

That feeling when you're optimizing your code and comment a small function to compare results, then few hours later you push to production and forget everything about that function.
It aint pretty, nope I can't run away from this one!2 -
My wife is buying a small business. They have a website that I'm going to have to take over, and I have a feeling I'm going to want to redo it (it's not terrible looking, but I'm pretty sure it's WP, so just no thank you).
Was just wondering if anybody had any reccomendations for a cheap/free headless CMS?
Saw Ghost for $25/month but it has "user" limitations (as in, seemingly, limits to your site traffic). I'm just basically looking for cheap image/blog hosting queryable from a REST/GQL API. I'm considering just making a simple frontend for my wife to write markdown blogs up to S3 or something if there's no cheaper option.11 -
Is there a good tree view js plugin similar to jQuery.fancytree ?
I found alternatives that would work with react, Vue, etc but I'm looking for a framework free plugin. -
I have a Question ✋
Scenario : We are the offshore team. Asked to add a feature similar to other product. I added the feature in product, created necessary database to store the data. Later Manager started barking how my code isnt similar to the one he asked for me to do. I explained to him, my way is better for, database is optimized and is simpler. Later had to redo his way.
Question : How often do you come to situation like this? How would you have handled it? 🤔
Extra : Share if you have similar story.3 -
I have no clue what I just did.
2 months ago I changed my repository name and today when I attempted to pushed an update I realised I had to update my remote key. Which I did.
Now..my repository now contains someone else's repository and my entire code base is non-existent.
Slightly pissed off that I'm now having to redo the entire work again but at same time I'm kinda amused on how I did this.8 -
This tuesday I saw a really badly made PHP web application. Two actually. I was giving a time estimate for how long it would take to transfer these applications to our servers. While I was reading the code it became apparent that they had more security holes than Emmental cheese. Most views had obvious SQL-injection vulnerabilities and most probably XSS too. Although I didn't think too look for XSS in the moment. It just puzzled me that this bad code even exists.
But cherry on top was that the password wasn't checked at all. The login form was on the organization's website and was sent to the selected application. But the password wasn't checked in the application. And this was made by a real Finnish software development firm, like what the fuck.
Time to redo the applications I guess. Not like there's anything wrong in that if they pay for it.2 -

// second rant
So still about one of our dev.
So each time he works on some bug fixes or he doesn't want how the services works, he want to redo the whole service.
He already redo 3 services that senior developers have work on. Seniors who have more experience than him.
Don't know what to do on this dev.
He doesn't even know how to use Git CLI. 🤦♂️2 -
Wanted to start a little project of writing a website from scratch with a given template. No framework, just a basic thing. Apparently I've already done some work, long ago. And of course, I don't understand several parts anymore that are written. All knowledge and context gone. fuck...
At least I've realized I went for BEM css, instead of my utility css approach nowadays. Now the css has become hard to change, without accidentally breaking things. Also no git, surely because it was "just a small thing". Almost about to delete and redo. Fuck fuck fuck!1 -
I hate css. When I was in support, for some reason my task was to redo our support page (which I am no designer and never claimed to be, but whatever). I have been in engineering for quite a long time now. We HAVE a designer. Yet, the support site was never redone (and it should be) and any little bug that comes in for it is my issue. This css is going to be the death of me. Is the day over yet?1

I've been thinking, and i feel like being the bad guy... So, for now, I'm also an "idea guy" if you know what i mean...
Idea: This site could have a feature like "product recommandations" (just like long rants or something [tyical idea guy saying]), where users could recommend stuff like programs, peripherials, or anything dev related.
This could be done using tags, like certain tags would get sorted into the "product recommandations".
Sounds nice, doesn't it?
(PS.: We should also make a site which is like google, trust me, it would make millions...) -
Nothing can take the joy out of programming more, than having to redo and implement new features in uncommented legacy code, that takes 2x as long to understand than to actually code.

We probably aren't the fastest or the flashiest, but we get things done in a way I've not experienced in previous jobs - it's refreshing to work with someone in a similar mindset of rather learning a tool and implementing something properly, than either hiring a random consultant or doing a half-assed job. -
