I thought it would be good prank change semicolons to Greek question mark in my boss' code where his delivery date is today. I thought he will spend like at least few minutes figuring it out.
He ran make, immediately figured it out and even corrected with sed only. Then yawned and looked at me with a smirk. Now I am getting paranoid what he will do as revenge46 -
Our Web Technology professor taught us this in the year 2016, he said and I quote,
"HTML frames are the latest technologies in the www and are supported by new generation browsers only, for example Netscape navigator."14 -
Sometimes in my company, I just want to shout "Java is shit". But I am afraid my coworkers will beat me, because they all seem to love Java. 😅17
-
Our professor once asked us to 'mess up' the functionality of a PHP script with one shell command for fun. People tried different things like occupying the port, messing with access rights etc.
My friend just wrote a 'sed' command to replace all the underscores with an empty space...😂
It goes without saying that he stole the show.2 -
I did a job interview recently for a company and the test was something like this.
In ruby, write a web server that will serve a specific line number from a text file.
I thought up a simple solution and a more advanced solution, but I opted to go with the simple solution and submit my work quickly. I made a nice web server with tests and everything and it used the sed command to get the line number from the file.
Now, they had various instructions, like it had to perform. They asked how it'd perform with 10G, 100G files. I thought "Eh... it'll be alright."
The solution they were looking for was the "advanced" solution that I thought up, which involved storing a binary file of 32/64 bit integers that reference the byte-offset of the line they're looking for. Basically a binary index file.
This violates all of my sensibilities, because I would never build a database indexer like this using ruby, of all things.
I thought it was a stupid test, and how do these companies honestly expect me to spend hours coding and then tell me I didn't go far enough? It's unethical.
I actually followed-up with the "advanced" solution a couple hours after hearing I was out, just to show them that their process is flawed.2 -
The company I work for is currently maintaining some websites under an old (>1.5 years) version of Drupal, which has some well known vulnerabilities.
Yesterday we've found out somebody used them to inject php code into every single .php file on the machine. We've been discussing for hours about how to recover data, upgrade stuff, and maybe switch to something else. I've said jokingly "or we could put a find command in the crontab to sed away the php line they've injected!". Guess what we're doing now on our production servers?7 -
I learnt my college junior some coding and development, and we became best friends.
Later I asked her out, and now we are not talking after that. 😅10 -
" I wish to have a job where I can sit all day and still have a salary " said the 9 years old me not really considering the consequences. 11 years old later, here I am with *a dream come true* along with a constantly killing back and knees pain at my 20's writing some java codes.4

Not learning data structures and algorithms. Not learning programming languages. Actually not learning anything to answer during a job interview.
I am more of a learn-while-you-do kind of guy. I never learn anything, instead just do it. Interviewers think I am useless because I know nothing. But I can get a job done, any kind of job done. I have no learning period, I can start working from first day in a all new language, in a all new IDE, in a all new OS.
I know nothing, and I learn nothing. I am a problem solver. You got a problem, I can solve it.6 -
How could I only name one favorite dev tool? There are a *lot* I could not live without anymore.
# httpie
I have to talk to external API a lot and curl is painful to use. HTTPie is super human friendly and helps bootstrapping or testing calls to unknown endpoints.
https://httpie.org/
# jq
grep|sed|awk for for json documents. So powerful, so handy. I have to google the specific syntax a lot, but when you have it working, it works like a charm.
https://stedolan.github.io/jq/
# ag-silversearcher
Finding strings in projects has never been easier. It's fast, it has meaningful defaults (no results from vendors and .git directories) and powerful options.
https://github.com/ggreer/...
# git
Lifesaver. Nough said.
And tweak your command line to show the current branch and git to have tab-completion.
# Jetbrains flavored IDE
No matter if the flavor is phpstorm, intellij, webstorm or pycharm, these IDE are really worth their money and have saved me so much time and keystrokes, it's totally awesome. It also has an amazing plugin ecosystem, I adore the symfony and vim-idea plugin.
# vim
Strong learning curve, it really pays off in the end and I still consider myself novice user.
# vimium
Chrome plugin to browse the web with vi keybindings.
https://github.com/philc/vimium
# bash completion
Enable it. Tab-increase your productivity.
# Docker / docker-compose
Even if you aren't pushing docker images to production, having a dockerfile re-creating the live server is such an ease to setup and bootstrapping the development process has been a joy in the process. Virtual machines are slow and take away lot of space. If you can, use alpine-based images as a starting point, reuse the offical one on dockerhub for common applications, and keep them simple.

Ideas for a strong password:
- a regex matching my laptop's LAN IP address
- a sed command to enable X11 forwarding in sshd_config
- a shell oneliner extracting all the IP addresses from ifconfig / ip a sh
- an awk command to print processes in D state

Master/Slave
Fuck you guys. Honestly most of the rants i've read concerning python and their abolishme t of sait terms where fucking butthurt. "What virgin suggested this", "people shouldn't be offended, it's just a name" and so on.
I do agree with every one saying a name shouldn't matter (readability is a different story! However parent/child or producer/consumer IMHO preserve that). So why are you fucking offended when it is changed to parent/child or produver/consumer? Does it affect you in any way? You know there's the `sed` command, plus IntelliJ (and most other IDEs) have a quite good support for renaming/refactoring stuff.
By reacting this way, by beeing offended all you do is proving the point. Words can offend people. I personally don't care how it's called. So far I always used master/slave and didn't think twice about it. But then again if someone of my coworkers or friends would feel threatened by these words, I try to avoid them. Naming diesn't matter to me, nor the compiler. So fuck, if it makes people happy or feeling save then lets change it.
What the fuck do you gain by sticking to those terms anyways?17 -
Ran a sed find and replace function on project-folder/* instead of targeting a specific file extension. Fun Fact: sed replace will find those character combinations in image files, too. The site looked like you were on mushrooms. Thank goodness for git1

Started working as a developer about 2 months ago and on the first day of of work I was tought how to make coffee.
I couldn't understand why is coffee so important to the everyone in the company. I didn't drink the coffee for the first 2 week.
Now after many sleepless nights spent coding i then realise why the people worship the drink so much.
People get very pissed when they go to coffee machine and find that there is no coffee then the last person to have a cup is going to be shouted at and at times even get insulted.
Now coffee is my fuel and cant do much without it.6 -

Man, people have the weirdest fetishes for using the most unreadable acrobatic shell garbage you have ever seen.
Some StackOverflow answers are hilarious, like the question could be something like "how do I capture regex groups and put them in a variable array?".
The answer would be some multiline command using every goddamn character possible, no indentation, no spaces to make sense of the pieces.
Regex in unix is an unholy mess. You have sed (with its modes), awk, grep (and grep -P), egrep.
I'll take js regex anytime of the day.
And everytime you need to do one simple single goddamn thing, each time it's a different broken ass syntax.
The resulting command that you end up picking is something that you'll probably forget in the next hour.
I like a good challenge, but readability is important too.
Or maybe I have very rudimentary shell skills.5 -
Started my new job as a devops engineer, its been al month and i have never seen the seen of aws console or travis ci, dont even have credentials for any company cloud services.
I guess i should change my job title to backend dev1 -
TIL:
- AWK was based on egrep, and the idea was borrowed from sed - an extended sed of sorts
- My cat really loves green onions. She's chewing on her third as I write this.
What an interesting day, full of curious discoveries.

Why am I a rockstar today? So glad you asked! I used "sed" without having to look at the manual. 12 files updated, 10 minutes saved... that's some good time to devRant if you ask me.4

This is a story of how I did a hard thing in bash:
I need to extract all files with extension .nco from a disk. I don't want to use the GUI (which only works on windows). And I don't want to install any new programs. NCO files are basically like zip files.
Problem 1: The file headers (or something) is broken and 7zip (7z) can only extract it if has .zip extension
Problem 2: find command gives me relative to the disk path and starts with . (a dot)
Solution: Use sed to delete dot. Use sed to convert to full path. Save to file. Load lines from file and for each one, cp to ~/Desktop/file.zip then && 7z e ~/Desktop/file.zip -oOutputDir (Extract file to OutputDir).
Problem 3: Most filenames contain a whitespace. cp doesn't work when given the path wrapped in quotes.
Patch: Use bash parameter substitution to change whitespace to \whitespace.
(Note: I found it easier to apply sed one after another than to put it all in one command)
Why the fuck would anyone compress 345 images into their own archive used by an uncommon windows-only paid back-up tool?
Little me (12 years old) knowing nothing about compression or backup or common software decided to use the already installed shitty program.
This is a big deal for me because it's really the first time I string so many cool commands to achieve desired results in bash (been using Ubuntu for half a year now). Funny thing is the images uncompressed are 4.7GB and the raw files are about 1.4GB so I would have been better off not doing anything at all.
Full command:
find -type f -name "*.nco" |
sed 's/\(^./\)/\1/' |
sed 's/.*/\/media\/mitiko\/2011-2014_1&/' > unescaped-paths.txt
cat unescaped-paths.txt | while read line; do echo "${line// /\\ }" >> escaped-paths.txt; done
rm unescaped-paths.txt
cat escaped-paths.txt | while read line; do (echo "$line" | grep -Eq .*[^db].nco) && echo "$line" >> paths.txt; done
rm escaped-paths.txt
cat paths.txt | while read line; do cp $line ~/Desktop/file.zip && 7z e ~/Desktop/file.zip -oImages >/dev/null; done3 -
How it started:
Need to replace in a lot of SQL files certain stuff...
find . -type f -iname '*.sql' -exec sed -i 's|new|old|g' {} \;
12 hours later that find executed a shell script containing roughly 120 lines of text pipelining.
The jolly of inconsistent workflows.
Different SQL format stylings... Makes fun when single line string replace needs to be extended to multiline RegEx handling. Or matching SQL comment configuration..
Different line endings. MacOS, Windows, Unix, Bukkake.
Different charsets / collations. Anyone wants latin1_swedish_ci... utf8... utf16... :/
Realizing some people even left sensitive data inside the SQL files (e.g. API Tokens..... Yayyyyyyy).
...
Ugh. It's never a one liner. It's never easy. -.-

Cleaning up after yourself if so damn important. Even your git repos:
# always be pruning
git fetch -p
# delete your merged branches
git branch --merged | grep -v master | xargs -n 1 git branch -d
# purge remote branches that are merged
git branch -r --merged | grep -v master | sed 's/origin\///' | xargs -n 1 git push --delete origin -

Create DB connection file in every other place and writing password in all those connection files. 😒👿
Then using grep and sed like a pro to change passwords in one go. 🤷
Scratching their heads as to why the script says DB connection error.... After an hour or so; finding out that the password contains '@' sign it was under double quotes. 🤦 -
I am working on my personal resume website (with a lot of css and jQuery).
Two days ago, I got a job offer, so I started preparing for the interviews, leaving the website aside.
Then, yesterday that company turned me down. So, I left the interview preps and started working on website again.
Then, today there is another job opening and I am now again preparing for interviews, keeping the website on a pause again.
Also, I have my internal exams coming up this weekend.
I don't know what should I do. Idk what I am doing. 😥😥7 -

Earlier I used to help my college batch mates and juniors in coding and development stuff. Sometimes I used to do some projects with them myself to help them learn. Sometimes I used to go beyond limits to debug their errors, even spending hours with them physically or through TeamViewer.
But now I have realised that I had been no more than just stackoverflow.com to them. They just call me when they need me and don't even care about me as a friend.
So that's it. Now I have stopped helping such people. I don't care if that's rude or arrogant. I just don't want to do this. If they still are a friend, well and good otherwise they can leave. I don't care anymore. -
I might not be the only one who writes a complex ass code to do some task and when it's done I feel like a spartan and then I find out that a library was already there for it. Me 0 Internet 1

Ugh! Anyone also finds it incredibly annoying that regex notations can change between programs? And I don't mean like PCRE vs jS, those are functional differences.
I mean like... In sed, I always spend trying out all possible combos of backspacing when dealing with special notations like quantifiers {}, sets [], match groups () and so on!
Why can't it be just so that backslash anything = character literal, and not the functional counterpart.
Or at least stick to either one of the options, not like sed, where matchgroup is \(\), quantifier \{\} but a set is just []
Also wish sed supported reluctant quantifier (*?), having to use negative character set matching makes it much less readable...3 -

Please be gentle, first rant. :)
Can you please provide me with literature recommendations:
1. Books about software architeccture, design patterns and best practices in general.
2. "Relaxation" books related to developer's life experiences, something like "The Phoenix Project" (https://amazon.com/Phoenix-Project-...). I really enjoyed that. :)
I am aware that this is not best use of rants, but I would really like to hear this community recommendations. Thanks in advance. :)9 -
I just finished my second semester of computer programming. I then say to myself : "Let's use my new knowledge to make the program I worked on for fun two years ago better and more efficient!".

Is there a better CLI tool for finding/replacing stuff in files recursively? Other than like..
sed -i '' '/some/nonsense/g'7 -
I'm rewriting the wrapper I've been using for a couple years to connect to Lord of the Rings Online, a windows app that runs great in wine/dxvk, but has a pretty labyrinthine set of configs to pull down from various endpoints to craft the actual connection command. The replacement I'm writing uses proper XML parsing rather than the existing spaghetti-farm of sed/grep/awk/etc. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.1

Other build tools:
Here is a plugin, use it . Be done.
Scala Build Tool aka SBT:
Build your own plugin.
Everything is scala...
You can create by the way funny endless loops when using the wrong syntax - yet it might compile successfully. And then when you load the plugin, it works. Till it is evaluated - lazy evaluation for the fun.
Error messages are at best cryptic.
*If* you manage to get a working plugin and *if* it runs...
Surprise. Surprise.
You might need to parse the log output of SBT.
Another funny surprise: Log output isn't configurable. You can configure the log level. That's it.
So after a lot of pain stakingly putting together a fucking shitty plugin, you can now grind the rest of your brain with ...
sed.
Cause yeah. You can now use regex to parse an sbt build log and extract the necessary information.
:)
...
So....
Are we there?
Mwahahahhaa.
Only if you haven't forgotten to either disable colored output for SBT... Or take an extra mile with e.g. less -R.
Otherwise you have ASCII control characters in your file. :-)
After getting that shit to work, you now have finally a parseable build log.
Just took days instead of hours.
But that's SBT. :-)6 -
Is learning VIM worth it?
I have some (probably unjustified) prejudices to it - I find it rather visually unattractive. But it seems to me also that it boosts productivity.
So do you recommend it and what is least painful way to learn it?5 -
So I was installing ubuntu alongside windows in dual boot.
The installer had some problems while partitioning the disk, so I did it manually using GParted. Then the installer had some problems while installing GRUB.
Now I got to know that my windows partition has been corrupted and ubuntu isn't installing.
My fully functional laptop is now reduced to metal crap with no OS being able to boot. Fuck Ubunu. Fuck Linux. -_-4 -
Dear community,
Could you please recommend me some (free if possible) sites for SW skill assessment (for example: sites with quizzes, problems, exams etc.)?
Thanks. :)5 -
Today, I'm making a revolutionary change to our code base. I'm finally deprecating a script that lived in this goddamn repo for way too long. There's about 10 copies of the same script in 10 different directories. The script copies all the code into a "dev" folder and then runs "sed s/prod/dev/g" on all the files, and then overwites a bunch of it with some files suffixed with ".dev". Finally, after fighting the so-called architects, the devs and everyone else that seems to have gotten used to the pain this cursed dumpster fire script has caused us, my merge request is now open and ready to go to get rid of this insanity. Now we won't have to deal with as many "surprises" that happen every goddamn time we deploy to production, overwriting all our hard work by accident, and relieve some of my OCD of having the same script in 10 different places in the repository.4

Spent last 2 days trying to get an upstream data file loaded. I've now concluded it's just corrupted during transfer beyond repair... But I got to practice lots of Linux commands trying to figure out what the issue was and fix it (xml parser was throwing some error about nulls originally)

Is it just me or are there more people who get immense satisfaction and happiness resetting their PC and their phone?
Like I was kinda depressed for some 2 days, and today I re-installed Windows in my friend's laptop and now I am feeling up again. Now I am resetting my PC and my phone 😋.
Feeling super motivated and hoping for a better start. 😁5 -
So there is this guy with a startup, who wants me to work with him like a co-founder, putting innovations in to the startup. But I want to work like an intern, I will code, you will pay me money, if something breaks, I'm out.
Idk for how long, we can continue like this. Sometimes I feel I should leave, but then I think about the extra pocket money (I am a student). But he calls me like 10 times a day, talking for 15-30 minutes on phone, repeating the same things again and again, which really pisses me off as an introvert.
Should I leave the extra pocket money for some peace of mind?1 -
How do you know that you are stuck in a job without longterm perspective (besides some undefined gut feeling)?
And what to do then? It seems to me, only possible action is to change job. Is there any, less extreme, alternative? -
Was absent minded this whole day, sorry if my answers took long / were out of context @ the meetup.
I was poking why a bona fide DB import didn't work...
VARCHAR(254) COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci GENERATED ALWAYS AS (LOWER(...)) VIRTUAL
MySQL 5.7 to MariaDb 10.5 ...
After long hours of poking:
https://jira.mariadb.org/browse/...
Yeah. It's the COLLATE statement. *narf*
I love SQL, but god damn it this stupid fscking frigging dumb platform and version specific behaviour is fucking annoying.
sed -Ei 's|COLLATE.*GENERATED|GENERATED|g' helps. Just takes a bit of time on an 75G sql dump. -.-
Took only 4.5 hours to find out.
But now test suites are crunching, looking good til now.... *sigh*2 -
Never used Emacs in batch mode, did it today to transform some code generated by struct2ts (convert Golang structs to Typescript classes/interfaces).

Good times: Migrating a Jenkins build pipeline patched together out of groovy, python, bash, awk, perl scripts and God knows what else since I have only scratched the surface so far, from Maven to Gradle while not breaking day-to-day builds, integrations and deployments of features, hotfixes and releases. I'm actually enjoying the challenge but it's taking forever due to several issues:
- Jenkins breaks/hangs randomly because it's Jenkins
- Gradle can't handle sets of version ranges but Maven can
- Maven can't handle Gradle style version ranges
- Gradle doesn't have a concept of parent poms, you need to write a plugin and apply stuff programmatically. But plug-ins being part of the buildscript{} don't fall under depency management rules
- Meme incompatibility issues of BSD vs GNU versions of CLI tools like sed, grep etc1 -

I offered my college junior a referral in my company, and she said she doesn't want to be favored and wants to get a job all by herself.
So I am thinking if applying for a job through referral is really unethical or against someone's self-respect? 🤔🤔
What happens when you see a person offerring referral opportunities on linkedin or other social media and apply there?? In that case, it doesn't seem so wrong. Maybe it was a little too personal offer that made her think about her self-respect? 🤔2 -

I hate windows caret returns sneaking in bash scripts! fuck*ng \r shit!!!!
sed -i 's/\r$//' YOURFILE every time a fucking windows friend send me a script so boring2 -
Help is welcome - I don't get it x.x
Just started scripting and can't find it on google:
Got a little whitelist with urls in it and a huge list with urls in it.
whitelist format:
foobar.com
barfoo.au
format huge list:
blabla=/foobar.com/wo.op
blabla=/barfoo.au/wo.op
blabla=/barfoo.crazy.au/wo.op
blabla/barfoo.crazy/wo.op
should stay in the file.
Now I want to delete the entries of the whitelist from huge list.
I have no clue how I can get the
foobar.com
into
sed -i '/foobar\.com/d' $file
to make it work in my script x.x5 -
For a little background on the sort of stuff I'm dealing with, check out my last rant.
Anyways, I'm testing this pipeline at work and was just reminded of the fucktarded way a "software engineer", who had a bachelor's biology degree, decided to handle a json file.
The script is question is loading a json file containing an array of objects. The script is written in perl. There's a JSON module. Use that? Fuck no! Let's rather perform an in-place sed command on the file substituting the commas separating objects in the array with newlines, then proceed to read the file line-by-line and parse out the tokens manually. Mind you, in the process of adding the newlines he didn't keep the commas, so now all of these json files his bullshit handled are invalid json that cannot be parsed.
The dumb ass was lucky the data in the file is always output upstream as a single line and the tokens for each object are always in the same order, so that never led to problems. But now, months later after I fixed his stupidity I am being reminded of it again as I'm testing and debugging some old projects as part of regression testing new changes I'm making.
TL;DR Fuck dumbwit motherfuckers who can't even google search "parsing a json file" and doing literally anything that is less fucktarded than manually parsing a json file2 -
I keep getting emails from people I don't know that are like conversations, leading me to believe they aren't sent to the rightful owner. Most of the time, I see the email has uppercase at some places (when mine doesn't).
I just wish the companies could put a mark somewhere in their page when entering an uppercase email that mentions the fact that it doesn't change shit, getting really annoyed from receiving these mails not directed to me 😒 -

Always dismissed tools such as JSBin for no apparent reason. Gave it a go a few weeks ago, and god damn as I love JSBin now. -

What do you think about Udemy?
And if you took it, which courses did you find most useful - not only related to programming/development but in general?
Thank you in advance. :)3 -

I need recommendation for site/community to improve my (clean) code style?
And, in more general, what are your ways to improve code style and programming way of thinking - more oriented towards bigger picture of application/systems (patterns, architecture, etc.)?3 -

I need some recommendation for Web UI components framework which could be relativity easily integrated/used on Play framework web application.
Something like Primefaces or old Richfaces (but those are for JSF).
Thanks in advance. :)2 -

Once upon a time I was working with an engineer who loved sed and awk a bit too much. We had data stored in SharePoint that was retrievable via an RSS feed. Said engineer insisted on using curl to grab the feed and sed/awk to parse the HTML ...
I on the other hand suggested using libcurl (primarily for NTLM auth support) and parsing the RSS feed using libxml.
Which engineer do you think management decided supporting?
Hint: Reusability and maintainability were big requirements in this project.1
