Me: so, ifconfig, what is my gateway?
ifconfig: [ip address]
Me: nmap, what is this IP address?
nmap: it's a network switch with an open telnet port.
Me: what happens if I connect to it?
switch: WHAT IS THE PASSWORD?!?!
Me: is it blank?
switch: correct. what do you want to do?
Me: can I look at all the IP and MAC addresses on the network?
switch: WHAT IS THE ADMIN PASSWORD?!?!
Me: is it... admin?
switch: correct. Here's everyone that's connected to the network: [400+ IPs and MACs]
Me: ok python, would you filter through these and tell me what manufacturer each one belongs to?
python: sure.
[~50 manufacturer lookups later]
python: there's a bunch of apple product, a bunch of miscellaneous laptop and printer manufacturers, and some raspberry pis.
Me: raspberry pis?
python: yep. about 20 of them.
Me: What happens if I connect to one?
rpi: WHAT IS THE PASSWORD?!?!
Me: raspberry?
rpi: correct. what do you want to do?
Me: can I make you do my bidding in the background when you aren't being used?
rpi: sure, sounds fine.
I love ignorant sysadmins.8 -

I am gonna rage for a bit.
Before I start, know this: I diehard love development, computer science and everythjng surrounding it.
The area comes with a very nice and interesting history and cultural impact. In particular, here as it was in the U.S of A. I love it, I love researching till my eyes beg me to stop and my brain fries. I love reading about history and the silicon knights that madd shit happen through digital wizardry.
And you can only imagine how happy I was when I got my shiny lol B.S in Comp Sci, keep it in my office and errthang.
I
Fucking
Love
My
Field
But. I have noticed something recently. In 2018(obviously before that) this new generation has a knack for making things cringey.
What do I mean by that?
Well, shit like that. Is it necessary? Or what about images(multiple) showing stuff like "double tap for your favorite language!"
Why? Why must we be this way? Why do people find a way to shit all over nice things? Is this shit necessary?
I specially hate pictures of girls showing their legs and right next to them a laptop with some basic af css file --->#codergirl ....fuck off.
Or the trillions of code pictures that are only html or some js framework flavor of the week.
Its just retarded man.38 -
This is why I love working where I work. I worked extra hours until 9pm to get an ITest environment ready for one of my customer teams. I came in this morning to a little prezzie and a thank you card signed by the entire customer team. This is what awesome culture looks like.10

A big shoutout to all software vendors, who, at the top of their product homepage, simply explain to you in 2-3 non-bullshit sentences what their product actually does, and what it is used for. I fucking love you.
And a big fat middle finger to all the rest with your useless buzzword gobbledygook. Go to hell.9 -

my dad message me 7 am, with spec on a raspberry he got and the question if python was similar to C (he programmed C, 20 years or so ago.)

dad: "what is a git?"

When my programmer boyfriend talks about his code, all I say is "That's so cool, babe," because I have no idea what he's even talking about.
He could be telling me he blew up a server.
"That's so cool, babe."

No work is going to be tolerable if you don't enjoy it. If you got into programming or IT or any industry simply for the money you can earn doing it, you're in for a BAD TIME.
I love computers, linux, programming, configuration, automation, and problem solving. So I love what I do. I am currently three weeks into 13 weeks of parental leave, and I have been having dreams about work at night.
The best piece of advice I can offer to someone who has trouble getting motivated is: make sure to like it first.10 -
My mother.
She explained to me what “algorithm“ is. I was 14. Instant love for the domain. In 2 days, I knew exactly what I want to do with my life1 -
Just got the most introspective job interview ever.
Like, I think those guys now understand me better than my parents do.
Like, I learnt more about myself during this interview process than during my psychological evaluation.
Like, I changed my career plan twice during the interview process.
I don't know who I am anymore but I wanna work with those guys8 -
Seriously anyone who doesn't use english names for variables and shit, get the fuck out! I don't care how many dicks you sucked, don't fucking do it!
I'm working on redoing a somewhat big database with a small team and the fuckers who designed the new database decided to use danish names everywhere and misspell shit! What the fuck are you doing!
Who the fuck calls it a birthdate? and misspells the danish equivalent?
And what the fuck is this, using _id and ID like they are the fucking same thing!?!
For the love of all that is holy, stick to english, one naming convention and check your crap spelling!
AARGH!19 -
I just started using git. it is unbelievably useful. What an idiot I was that I didn't start using it earlier. I LOVE GIT!3

I just started to use Fira Code as my main font because another awesome user recommended it and I must say, this shit is beautiful. This is what I love about this community. I learn more and get to know more cool shit because of what users say in here than the 5 years I spent at uni. You ninjas rock!6 -
I’ve battled depressed I failed to realized I had for many years. I didn’t love myself, I forgot what it felt like to love myself, and then one day my life turned around out of the blue. I believe my turning point was when I realized that I wasn’t alone and that people did care about me. I just wasn’t motivated especially after almost losing my cousin to suicide 3-4 months back. It changed my DNA, my personality, everything about me changed until I told myself that I had enough.
Today marks the 4th month where I last had a cup of coffee, soda, or junk food in general because in all honesty it was just making my depression worse. Today also marks the 4th month I’ve been going to the gym without fail and I’ve now noticed how far I’ve come. I love myself more than ever now and I am VERY goal oriented as well. I have one more year left until I get my bachelors degree in Software Development and soon after I’ll go in for my Masters and who knows what I’ll do after that.
It’s all uphill from here and by sticking to my new routines I am feeling a lot better as the days and months pass.
Attached is my progress thus far, left is from when I felt at my lowest and right is the progress I’ve made so far with improving myself and where I am at now.
I love myself, I love those that love me, and I LOVE feeing AMAZING like I do now when I wake up every morning waiting to see what the day has in store for me 😄❤️rant self-improvement let me be your antidepressant <3 love you guys self-image story time progression depression love you all19 -
My teachers rant: "Who invented whiteboard markers? *trying to write some code on the board, but the marker went dry* What every happened to black boards and chalk. Chalk never gets dry.... I going to have to look that up" LOL, man I love him. He is so old that its funny and cute at the same time15

After deciding to do what I love every day nothing feels like work any more, because continuous change and improvement is what I live for.
That is all. ✌🏼2 -
My Love I am writing to you from the front lines roughly 1 month into Microsoft Access. I hope you are doing alright and no harm has found you.
You might have heard the news that it has not been going well for us. The truth is we were not prepared in any way for this. We are constantly facing problems with the code and when we understand one function another two are referenced inside of that function.
The high command does not provide us guidance, truth be told I do not think they know what their application is doing. I am surprised we got this far. Our new objective is to focus our primary forces on the if/else and cases. The name for this assault is "Operation Logical Function" and I fear for my life as I do not know what is in those cases or where the road will lead.
Morale is very low, many of the soldiers spend time writing letters to their loved ones, recreating their blog for the 5th time or just daydreaming when they were free from this tyranny of legacy war.
For now , I long to be in your arms and smell your lilac and gooseberries cologne I love so much
My love and thoughts always with you , your John7 -

You know one of the things I love about this community is?
We have such a diverse group of people and even when those who don't speak English natively, they try to on the app as much as possible keeping it consistent. Even when they make some mistakes, no one's a dick about it (from what I've seen), which is awesome!13 -
Yes, I love my parents.
But every fucking time I plan to buy a PC they will make some noise. I am not even touching their money to buy it yet they will make a fuss about it.
"All my son does is sit in front of computer whole day"
Sorry father but I am doing the same thing in my job. They are young enough to know what I am doing yet still keeps ranting on me.
I still love them but this is so annoying sometimes.6 -

Don't you just love it when you're pitching new project ideas and there's always that one negative person that has to find something to complain about?

What I've learned so far in Ubuntu
1. Never mess with root directory
2. Never mess with scary command
3. Never install additional DEs
4. Never close terminal while something is going on
Or you have to install Ubuntu again
Although I love Ubuntu7 -
When a programmer is in love,
He doesn't care about the UI, but cares about the algorithm and functionality.
In real life, he care about what is inside, not the physical appearance. :)5 -
Seriously, wtf is with the new "make-everything-in-javascript" thing?
JavaScript is a terrible language. The type safety, or rather lack of it, gives me nightmares about debugging. The standards are always different. It's way too flexible. Ugh.
I'm tired of all the awesome services that I'd love to use being centralized over Node and JS. I don't want to use your stupid fucking language. Who does?
Also what happened to that dart thing that was supposed to replace JS?11 -
A brief, and biased opinion of what love is in the dev world:
Love is my employees bringing me something to eat when they know I stay back so that they can all go out do whatever they can do.
Love is my CMS admin getting his ass up and walking all the way to my office when the director walks in to say some STUPID FUCKING SHIT to me that he(CMS Admin) knows would have me 2 fucking seconds away from getting out of my chair and drop kicking the fuck out of him.
Love is the rest of my employees getting up to follow along in case(certainly) one dude is not able to hold me down.
Love is them knowing that I know that their mere presence there will make me chill the fuck out and not choke the fucking director
Love is the CMS Admin proof reading every email I send to a bitch that was trying to get smart, to make sure that I was not being agressive.
Love is said CMS Admin bringing me coffee or a coke congratulating me on listening to him about X email not being aggressive (there is no passive in my vocabulary, just balls out "isn't this your fucking job" aggressive)
Love is my lead developer showing to work after medical treatment fucked up as all hell because he knows that if he is not there I will do a billion things myself in order to give him some rest.
Love is taking my CMS admin and lead dev out to eat when a major stakeholder shits on something I damn well know it took them a while to finish. Love is also letting me open up to said stakeholder to tell them how much of a fucktard they are, sometimes they let me loose, and I appreciate that.
Love is every small person in the company approaching you to tell you of their issues, becuase they care more about the productivity they give to their users, rather than the bullshit numbers their managers care about.
Love is the staff of other places taking care of you because you are not a VP dickhead that treats them like shit.
Love is the HR reps sending you personal e-mails asking you for help because their shitbag of a boss does not count for help and leaves them in the blank with shit software, for which said HR go above and beyond for you later on even though said shitbag manager said no.
Love is your team getting angry and responding respectfully at people when they talk shit about their manager on their emails (manager being me)
Love is your employees closing your door for you when they know you are overwhelmed and you need a quick second to pull yourself up.
Love is not wanting to leave this miserable place because you know some dickweed will be left in charge of the people that care for you, trust you, work for you regardless of the date, and confide in you.
They got me locked in, this shitty institution, for now. Until I find a way to bring my entire team with me.8 -

I fucking hate Angular. I don't know man I've been using NoScript since my balls dropped and I feel like JavaScript is fucking useless (I like Typescript syntactically though).
What drives me nuts is all the frameworks: Think of a word, add .js, search it up... it's theeeeere.

Ooohhh I feel GDPR is seriously kicking in. And frankly I like it :)
just minutes ago a spanish photographer asked me if he could take a photo of me and use it in his expo. The photo thing took like half a minute, but we spend another 10 minutes on explanations, documentations and signing of aggreements.
Poor photographer. But I love that I know what exactly is going to happen with my portrait and my email :)

Oh mum...
My mum comes to me asking "What's happening on my phone? What's this little thingy?" (typical question)
*looks at (android) phone*
*sees downloading icon*
Me: "It's downloading something..."
*pulls down notification bar*
*I see Facebook app updating*
Mum: "What is it?"
*3 seconds later*
"Oh it's the Facebook"
Took her literally 3 seconds to recognize😅
Love my mum though😊😏3 -
My father was very supportive. Every time I was studying he'd take the dog for a walk, do the dishes and whatnot so I could study quietly and uninterrupted.
The rest of my family was supportive as well but not on that level. They always told me how awesome it is and do what I love. -
Boy do I love when Snapchat sends me a snap telling me happy father's day.

Css was developed by monkeys. I fucking hate how there is no organisation, laying out stuff requires too much work, there are billions of ways to do something. All the time while I'm programming I hate Java.... Don't hate me now :D I'm learning Java in high school. I very love very fast programming languages such as C and C++, so this is why I don't like Java, but there are some reasons why I like Java. I just started learning how to create own window. What the hack is this? This is so simple. I tried to create window in C/C++ with OpenGL, just blank window with color. Complicated..... But with java it's fairy tale.
You can add me now to Java familly, but remember I also love C++.
So here your are, Hello World Java FX app :D
Final goal:
Create window application similar scratch.16 -
When I hear people talk about love and the first thing that comes to mind is the Lua framework for 2D game development4

I love static sites and fancy new frameworks. Had an interview some time ago at a medium sized company. They specifically wanted someone to build static sites and introduce the company to Vue and Gridsome.
I got really excited for my first project. It was a wordpress site and I had to build a custom WP theme for it. Not exactly what I expected. Also I had no prior PHP knowledge, nor any experience with Wordpress. So I got really upset, because it wasn’t the technologies I was used to.
The first week was hard, I wanted to quit. But once something clicked. And I realized I know this. This is not PHP, not Wordpress, not Vue, but just simply a programming language. At the core everything programming language is the same. PHP became comfortable, Wordpress conventions didn’t bother me. I realized I can use great technologies with WP too. I get to know twig, added some sass, compiled everything nicely with webpack. And after a month I have a beautiful, fast and efficent site. I love it.
I realised that I don’t love the languages and frameworks. I love coding itself. I love creating efficent and reliable, clean code. No matter the architecture.
And my advice for you is to stop hating particular languages and serious debates on what is better, and hating your job when you can’t code in your new shiny framework. Love coding itself, because it’s a wonderful activity. We are creators, we are artists. Not <insert specific programming language here> developers.16 -
Do you ever just wake up and your first thought is the perfect solution for a problem from the previous day and then you're like wtf brain you're supposed to sleep not to solve problems at night?

"let's quickly compile php by hand and get php-fpm running!"
All is compiled well but I can't, for the love of what-the-fuck-ever figure out how to load extensions within the configuration and the internet isn't helping out much either.
How fucking difficult can this be?!17 -
Holy shit. I just watched a video on Rust and I think I am in love.
Tracked mutability, reference counting, guaranteed thread safety, all in a compiled type-safe language with the performance of C++? 😍
Why did I not check this out sooner??10 -
"Get a job doing what you love, you'll never work a day in your life" they said

Ever since i was a little boy, i was fascinated by the stars in the sky and what made them shine. I used to wonder how our universe came in to being. What made it what it is today. What will happen to it long after we re gone. Will it die? Will it live forever? How big is it? Why is it big if it s big and why is it small if it s small. "God did it" was never a satisfying answer for me. God does not play dice as Albert Einstein said. So many questions went through my 10 12 year old mind. Until someone recommended to me the book, "A brief history of time". The book answered a lot of my questions and gave birth to more. Computer science is like my crush. I love it as a friend. But Astrophysics, its the true love of my life. It not only quenches my thirst, but it satisfies my curiosity, while making me more curious. Its an endless cycle. It teaches us that we came from the stars, we go back in the dirt, and only to be returned to the stars again.
Stephen Hawking, his work, his books, taught me so much. Inspired me. Made me more curious. And today the world has truly lost, one of its greatest people.
You will be missed Sir Hawking. RIP. -

Just saw a job ad for a company they were asking for one developer they wanted software developer x 7 and senior developer x 2.
How cheap is that? If you want to hire people do so but don't bundle them up, the description for what is required is funny too, I love how companies don't even know any standard way of asking for a specific role just blurt you need this this and this senior is that plus knows how to lead, cool.
Is this really a real requirement: "Visual Studio experience"?
Or is this just some piss take?2 -
!rant #meta: I registered just yesterday and woke up this morning with 44 notifications, which is great because this community is obviously refreshingly active, plus I really love getting notifications. Nevertheless, is it really necessary to create an individual notification for EVERY SINGLE +1?! Dear devRant devs, I love what you're doing. But please, PLEASE, merge/group these notifications into just a few. I don't want to go through every single one of these, it's just cluttering my notification list. I always just clear the list and then use the in-app bell symbol to navigate to whatever item I'm interested in. I can't be the only one.4

This is what I love about fellow devs - they know what's best, you don't need to ask something like "please keep adding xyz to your post so we can see if it...". We just do it. :32

Probably still gonna gib me PTSD in a week or so but fuck it.13 -

AGAIN !!! MICROSOFT (MAY GOD SEND THEM TO HELL) GAVE A DEADLY BLOW TO SOMETHING I USED TO LOVE !!
This new UI update is just aweful, i mean, i love github, i work using github, i do so many things with it, or should i say that i used to ....
This update seems so un-natural, it just doesn't fit.
Why would the collabs be shown so obviously ??
Why would the main window be so narrow while the rest is widescreen ????
My eyes get tired so quickly when i use it now.
It used to be something nice, easy to use, but now it is more like a social media than a professional coding tool.
I HATE YOU MISCROSOT WHAT EVER YOU TOUCH TURNS TO BE A SHIT HOLE25 -
That moment when the entire office is Apple fanboys and you are the only windows supporter.
What can I do? First love is first love.19 -
Working on what you love may be the most dangerous trap i have ever been told.
Why? You may work on what you love, but for a person that you don't. This will be the most thing that you will encounter on your career. I have been programming since i was 11 and my passion was sucked by my jobs.
And that's why all of my other hobbies will ever become a job, no matter how much people think i am good at it, the only reason i am good at my hobbies is because i don't do it for a living.
You can work on what you love, but don't expect expressing yourself at your job.
There is the Entrepreneurship route, where, instead of sucking your own passion, you should be sucking your employees passion, if you are doing it right.4 -
First things first:
HI devRant. This is my first post, I've been a observer for the most by now but I'm so glad I found this network (by searching for other people who hate ionic, angular, react)
Question:
What is it about Linux, that any developer seems to love?
I'm a IT student in Germany and I grew up with windows. I know what it's doing, I'm working quite fast on it and it just runs well.
But inehrn I look around at the university the guys who really know what they're doing with their code are using Linux only. There's not even one of them who would consider windows.
I couldn't really find a satisfying answer for that.16 -

I love Unix, Linux all that shit (macOS can fuck off though). But why WHY WHY does every pissing update have to break something?! Guys I need fucking networking, not even intertubes just basic networking.
Anyway, I've come up with a solution. It is quicker for me to install a new OS and restore files from backup than to fix it, so that's what I do.10 -
Gotta love when you have something breaking because of an interface you have to maintain for a subcontractor for some shit that never should have been subcontracted in the first place and the problem is an obscure error caused by a Microsoft product that you're only using because the other Microsoft product you were using is no longer supported. So I guess what I am saying is fuck subcontractors, fuck Microsoft, and fuck tlb files

Lets play a game of spot the bug...
Too easy you say?
What if I told you that this code was written by a well paid dev over an exceptionally large period of time?
Crazy huh, but that's still nothing. The most ludicrous thing about it - is that you (like me) probably suffer from a mild case of impostor syndrome.
I just ended that suffering. The only thing worse than impostor syndrome is believing you actually know what the fuck your doing. Keep it in check but learn to love it... it's probably the reason you could spot the bug after all.4 -

I hear a lot of you saying Wordpress is bad and we should move away from it. My question is : what are your alternatives ?
At my company we focus on clients being able to easily change content of their website. I'd love to learn if there is a good alternative11 -
The best thing about perl is it doesn't care about errors and really tries to do what you ask, without throwing exceptions.
The worst? It does exactly what you ask, no matter how insane.
Typed $arri[ $0 ] instead of $arr[0] inside a function that detected what changes were needed in dns zones. $0 is script name and path, strings are converted to integers as needed and there's a little thing called vivification.
You see where this train wreck is going.
Also my dog died today.
Got to love Mondays :/11 -
Well,
I have hit a new low...
If u don’t know, I love C language... have been using it for a while now...
But today, my brain is under a meltdown... I can’t freaking write a simple pointer based program....
WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!
College is killing me ☹️☹️😭😭2 -
Is it just me, or is the rants longing for stickers and balls (sounds vaguely euphemistic) becoming just a bit too common?
I love some good stickers as much as the next guy, but wouldn't it be more fun to have them for something more, well, rant-y?
But by all means, keep ranting about what you think about, I love all of it.3 -
No matter how many frameworks and supersets I try, I always conclude that nothing beats vanilla JS. ES6 in particular is such a beautiful language, and I love having fine control over what happens under the hood.
When I'm done I can just transpile it to whatever ES version, although it's slowly becoming a non-issue.2 -
Boss wants me to become lead developer on a huge project; I still consider myself Junior and feel like there is still more for me to learn before I can even accept something like this. The company is amazing and I would love to step into this role but I fear that I will only disappoint.
What would you do? If I should take it; could you recommend resources that would help me level up?8 -
So decided 'fuck it lets try the chromium based edge on my PC and Mac...'
And you know fucking what... It is actually fucking awesome, as much as I love Google (Fight me) and dislike Microsoft products, I can honestly recommend the new Edge over Google Chrome or any from of Chromium...
Thank-you for coming to my TED X talk....9 -
Although the screen is blurry, that just Windows doing what it does best... BSOD, you gotta love movie theater bluescreens.2
-
Just discovered Insomnia Designer, I freaking love it and it's git integration. This is exactly what we developers needed for years 🥳10
-
Arguing with my friend what language is best for his program.
Suddenly he says "C++ is good but CodeBlocks is too hard and illogical".
I love wannabe tech guys.9 -
Many advantages of being a dev:
- You can work on multiple projects simultaneously.
- You solve problems for a living, how cool is that!
- Job security (Even if you get fired or something, you can still earn your bread with your skills)
- Even if you are bed ridden or get in an accident or get old, you can still work(kind of a pessimist).
But the best part is, you get to do what you love(for me its true).1 -
Another reason to love and support Open-source, is that you can be vocal about what you believe in, what you stand for, and what you support.
All without the fear of anyone or any criticism.27 -
Gotta love (video game) soundtracks for programming. They are most often instrumental which distracts the brain not so much from the task but make it easier (at least for me) to get in the zone. Especially with noise-cancelling headphones.
My favorite is all things Metroid, like that one:
https://youtube.com/watch/...
(and of course the Harmony of a Hunter albums).
What is your favorite (game or movie) soundtrack for programming?7 -
I swear I NEVER hated PHP before, but after seeing this shit, I just can't love it anymore, I feel betrayed
I mean, WTF? Just bc I'm using the variable as a reference in the NEXT loop the LAST element changes? What even is the fucking reason?
Yeah, I read the answer on StackOverflow, but seriously...
SO ref: https://stackoverflow.com/questions...12 -
Don't think I could love IT anymore then I do now! Currently and intern and was stressing a small bit about what I wanted to do after college (i.e. web development, mobile development, security) then came to the realisation that I can do whatever i want. I don't think any other profession has such a freedom within industry and that is why love IT so much. Looking forward to many more years of learning and developing my skills2
-
That feeling of absolute joy, when something you've been working on for a loooong time, finally just works... THAT is the reason why I love what I'm doing
-
Companies like this one do love exportation. What junior+ developer would switch jobs to an intern that is unpaid?
Not even students (Or graduates) can apply to this position.15 -
"The great thing about personal work is that it can shape your commercial work. Clients see what you create for yourself and that can be the starting point for a new project, which closes the cap between the work you love making and the work you get paid for." - Gemma O’Brien

know what is worst than fucking clients from hell?
fucking websites that need a mortherfucking good spec computer to run. i cannot even type properly. thought my keyboard had problem. no. I can fucking type fucking quick and well here now with no hiccup. i wish i can burn those all down.
no wonder we love devrant. even the website is fast and good.3 -
#confession
I don't know what you guys think but I freaking love programming my own Minecraft client. It sounds childish but I love to see server owners rage when they see their Servers dying because of my exploits. It's a good feeling.
But I got 3 DOS attacks afterwards so there is a high risk to make lifetime enemy's.
Let us all post our dark side of knowledge and the shit we have done to amuse ourselves!11 -
Just wondering, fellow devRanters...
Q: What is your favorite programming language, and why?
I'm currently studying Unity, so I'm in love with C#, it helped me understand a lot of concepts like namespaces, encapsulation, constructors, something that I was struggling to grasp with PHP, which I use every single day at work.13 -
I can't understand the people who are in love with Qt. Did you ever actually use it?
It has shitty UI components (compare them with Microsoft WPF or even WinForms), and it is fucking full of bugs. Really. I've never seen that many bugs in other frameworks.
I'm a Linux guy, but try .net if you want to see what a great framework is actually like.4 -
Not so much in my work but more my career.
My dad has been a great role model, still is and always will be.
He was an hard working metalworker. He loved his job. It's not a 50k job but he could easily manage his life.
My dad showed me that doing what you love, working with passion, makes your life easier and more fun. You deliver high quality products, because you care.
Since I found out that I love programming, I made it my life goal to do it as my career.
I've never been happier before. After all, I make money with my hobby.1 -
Don't you just love when people hit you up on facebook saying their laptop/PC broke, tell you the symptome and then immediately ask:
- What could be the problem
Well, fucking trillion different things? What am I a fucking wizard? You want me to conclude why your PC is shutting randomly down when all you told me is "It's shutting down... like, randomly" and I don't have any insight into your PC and it's contents?3 -
What music genre do you prefer listening to when coding?
I'm going with rock/metal, Linkin Park is love ❤️26 -
90% of beginner questions are so damn annoying. I get it, some people are new and still learning but for the love of God, I just want to tell these kids to shut the fuck up, sit their ass down and WRITE SOME DAMN CODE, instead of bitching and moaning about what they best language is or how to magically read a tutorial and become a ninja in a day.
Fuck.4 -
Lets discuss Git Clients. Now I love electron, in concept. And I love what you can do with it, on paper. And I understand Github's need to jack itself off by developing its own framework just to make its own software in being what Github is, and then everyone else following suite because Github must know best. And that's my rant, I don't think it had a point. So, favorite git client and why?21
-
They all think I'm a hacker.
My parents have no clue about what I do.
My wife is starting to understand (at least she knows I make web pages 90% of the time I'm working), but still doesn't get close to see the full picture.
Btw, they are all very supportive and I love them for that :-) -
devRant!
I love devrant because devrant's design makes me to remind my B.Tech project design which had same upvote/tag/link styles like devrant and devrant has really weird devs too :D
What is the story behind you??4 -
If you want it and there's no better alternative, make it.
This is what has driven me for the past few years as I've fallen hopelessly in love with programming. I'm my own creator; my own God, if you will. -
What a horrible monday today was. Fuck-all worked. Missed deadline. Not much sleep. Heart is racing.
But hey, the horoscope in the daily toiletpaper press knows it all better, as usual, 100% IQ:
💫"You have finally found your center. Your body and soul are feeling great and your're in tune with yourself. You are enjoying it and would love to share your experiences with your loved one."💫
Where is my rocket launcher??? I have to kill a newspaper.6 -
love helping users that can describe their problem and then we have the "other" side of users, the life sucking golems of collective stupidity.
You get "software does not work!" and asks for error message or description of what doesn't work and get same response "it does not work".
After a few rounds in the "what is wrong support circle" it ends with user has changed PC to one were the software is not installed...
"it does not work" no effing shit sherlock you want me to install some IQ with it?2 -
Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.5

Coding was and is the thing that currently feeds me the most efficient way. But it's also what caused to cringe and to hate people the most because of legacy code and immensely narrowminded dimwits aka clients.
But yeah: Coding is love, coding is life. ❤️ -
Friend: "what is it, you love so much about being a developer?"
Me: "The feeling & satisfaction of writing something better & prettier than my past self."
Friend: "Oh. You sound like a Manga writer, I understand about as much about their mind as yours.."
Me: "Yeaah.. Can't argue there.. Can I? *chuckles*" -
Yesterday my boss bought a plastic mini golf set, which is like for 4 or 5 year olds. When he came back to the office couple of hours later he saw five grown man plays minigolf sitting(!) in the middle of the office, then he dared to say that we are childish. I still don't know what was his expectations when he bought that toy... Love this motherfucker :D
-
Oh no it's happening to me too... Gave up so many hobbies/interests to focus on my career. Now I have almost no interest in side projects because I don't know what to build. (I mean something actually useful not a to-do list.) I love my job, but is this the path to burnout?5
-
Teach kids to love computer science first, the rest comes later.
When I was in uni, most of my pals don't know why they're in the class. How the fuck can you teach linked list implementation when most of the students don't seem to bother to understand what a variable is? -
After creating my own PHP MVC framework with Twig as templating engine, everything is now so simple and so fast, I juat cant belive how much I understand now. The development is just so smooth, you know exactly what to do all the time... And for my simple project, it does not even hurt that much to use PHP (and its even strictly typed 7.2, so not that bad). I think that I am in love. ❤6
-
Honestly I love videos on YouTube that's sped up footage of someone programming a game and talking over it explaining what was happening or what they were thinking but I have only found a few channels that do it.. Hopson is one with his Mincraft in a week being my fav.. I just wish there was more..2
-
I love it when you don't know if your code is working as intended because you can't figure out what the intended behavior should be.
yay!
*sad party horn*
Please ignore the wk99-like code. I've been throwing stuff at the wall.1 -
Just love the customizability of phpstorm. I can work as minimal i need !
PS . I use also sublime, vim and atom based on what i need, but phpstorm is my main tool :D1 -
I hate so very much about so very many things, I forget some of the things I love.
And what I love is small lines of code that reveal something about their developer. This? This I love to see.
Some guy here studied C at university, decided he liked it so much he would port it over to JS. Absolutely pointless effort, but he decided he would do it nonetheless. The code is clean, documented, just with this little quirk and I'm honestly smiling. You rock, buddy, whoever you are.2 -
About to quit my job.. looking for another one in a different city for my lady..
The thing is that I love my job, I love what I do, I love my team.. but I love her more.. this may not be the best place for this, how it's on my path to do what I want to accomplish as a Dev and as a human being.. frustration++2 -
I never liked Facebook. I only use it to get posts from the pages on architecture. Yeah, i wanted to be an architect 😅. But after a week of getting into coding, i flipping fell in love with this too. After, i found devrant, i thank god that it exists. Facebook is for people ranting about what their relatives are liking or hating or what, people they don't know, are doing. That's not real. What you guys, the community so wonderful rants about everyday, is the real stuff. I love devrant. I love to code.
Chalo(is about the same as saying,"I'm out"), Good Night peeps 😴.I'm high on sleep.
P.S. didn't proof read the above because high on sleep2 -
That sad sad feeling of deleting my devrant account, because a pesky co-worker somehow discovered my alter ego on the Internet.
I don't necessarily want them to know some of the things I have said in the past. I don't regret said things, I needed to get them off my chest. It is just this person is ... what do you call them? Oh yes, a Snitch! I could see bad things happening if what I said got into the wrong hands.
Any who good to be back, I love this community.8 -
Random variation of how we learn based off a colleague.
1. I dont know what the fuck to do, i dont know what the fuck is going on
2. I don't know what the fuck to do, i know whats going on
3. I know whats going on, i know what to do
4. I know what to do, i dont know what the fuck is going on
Haha, i love my job, the place where devs play solitair with their Trello cards1 -
Got my raspberry pi fory birthday!!
Also got a raspberry pie, gotta love my family.
Is there a program that detects (subscribes) to a git projecr and automatically downloads changes?
(Of course there is, but what is a good one)3 -
Programming excel macros is the worst thing one could do to himself. VBA is the most cancerous anderen inconsistent language I had the "pleasure" to work with. I have problems like the following all the time for no apparent reason. For example: you script something, test is and everything is working just fine and dandy. Next day when you run the script, guess what...i doesnt work anymore. For no apparent reason what so ever. Maybe its just me, but i just want to hang myself working with it.
Anyone else has had such "Love story" like mine?6 -
Recently I've come to notice that I keep using my gut feeling every day in perf investigations [and it pans out]. Until now I used to think that "gut feeling" in IT and everywhere else is a synonim for "guessing". Turns out it's not at all that simple.
Damn, that's exciting! Love that spidey-sensey-feeling!! I hope it means I'm getting quite good at what I do.2 -
i hate this fucking life so much why do i have to fucking exist WHAT IS THE FUCIJG POINT OF DOING SOMETHING YOU HATE WITH PASSION DOIMG AND NOT DOING WHAT U WANT TO BE DOING I DO NOT UNDERSTA D THIS LIFE

Love writing comments, hate writing documentation.
Ugh, I know it is needed but just don't care about it as much as the code/comments which is a more direct 'here is what this does' approach. Writing idiot proof documentation sucks. Any little change? Have to remember to update the docs. Yeah, not happy.1 -

What are your thoughts about Elon Musk, is he really worried about AI or is this just a business strategy ? I mean I am a huge fan, love his work, but he wants to be the ruler and saver of the Universe.13

So I have a job interview on Monday for a marketing firm that works on a LAMP stack. Not a problem, since that's what I learned on and I love linux, but I haven't seriously touched PHP for years. So now I'm going back to do a refresher on OOP PHP and I'm like, "what the hell is a variable variable?"
Wish me luck..4 -
I absolutely love it when C# programmers who never learnt any language outside of their bubble discover C# is not the most feature up-to-date programming language. I am honestly annoyed by people who can read Java syntax but can't read ML syntax (because it is too 'clever' to be used in production). What a bunch of mediocre COBOL programmers!4
-
I love what I do, I'm passionate about what I do and at times I'd rather be home coding than at work in a meeting. While coding is amazing, I can see how someone could become overwhelmed. I can see why people are scared of programming. Not everyone needs to learn how to code so I don't see why so many people are pushing this "everyone should code" agenda2
-
I love learning by doing.
Building MVPs and prototypes is the best way. Even better if you have a chance to show and share them in front of an audience (peer pressure can be good!).
Share the lessons you've learned and what you've done wrong, it will help many more people than just yourself.
I've been working for an eLearning company for the last 4 years (CloudAcademy.com) and I'm in love with the idea of learning something new every day. And not just coding. Code is "only" a tool to solve problems, and learning something about those problems and fields will make you a better developer. -
The Elixium blockchain project is coming along pretty well! We worked on it pretty hard for a few months but then I had to take some time off to deal with life stuff, but now I'm able to work on it again and I can honestly say I've really missed it.
I'd love some more open source contributors (after all, that's what decentralized software is all about), so if you're interested, *every little commit helps*.
Here's the GitHub repo: https://github.com/elixiumnetwork/...8 -
Just watched Zombieland 2 in the cinema and the dumb blonde girl in the movie was so fucking sweet and adorable and NOT TO EVEN MENTION HOW HOT SHE WAS, but i fucking fell in love with her PERSONALITY, i know its an act but i also know there are people who exist with that personality, this is very weird to me because i fall in love by the looks, rarely by the behavior but i this time i love her because of her personality lol what the fuck is this
I didnt know it was possible to fall in love with someones personality like i dont even have the urge to fuck her just to love her for personality lmao
Aight im talking about this like we are exclusive but it was just a dumb but chill movie9 -
Why are you all so obsessed with hating jQuery? For me it just does the job done. Animate stuff. But I agree being totally dependant on javascript is bad for any website. Seen hundreds of wordpress spaghetti code where fancy effects were made with jquery like CSS opacity 0 and jquery animate to 1... What a bullshit. But yeah I still love jquery. Easy, fast and reliable.3

Post BA Phil degree pre CS degree
My parents - oh cool
My extended family - 'I thought you were going to go to law school, wow how many times are you going to change your mind?' 'who is going to pay for another degree, oh yeah your parents, kids these days' 'so what are you going to do with that Philosophy degree?' 'What are you going to do when mommy stops supporting you?'
Post CS Degree, employed doing what I love, paying off my loans
My parents - yay
My extended family - sweet f*cking silence, and the occasional 'oh so you are working on computers now?'
HA1 -
I think I know what it is like giving birth now. Spent hours in pain over making an algorithm and now I love my creation!3

What editor/IDE is best with javascript and node dev? I am currently using sublime, but I would love something with keyword completions 😊11
-
Don't you just love it when a client turns around at this time of year and tells you that there is a new project and it's due by the middle of January!
And then they tell you the specs... Wait... What? How? Ummm... So you want a test app that is basically a fully working product that would take months to build ready in 15-20 days.
I'd rather drag my balls along sandpaper and dip them in vinegar...2 -

I love to work on my machine, and being it
my work-horse for school and side-projects, I have a neat dualboot of Windows 10 and (driver-related) Ubuntu Mate.
Ditched Mate because screen tearing, got Cinnamon, but I have to say, that W10 UI appeals a lot for me, so... what kind of Windows is this?4 -
Wonder what tomorrow will bring?
Monday I fuck up by duplicatung some emails.
Today my colleague accidentally sent emails in our test system out which in turn reduplicated the same emails I sent.
My boss is going to love it when he's back in. -
Was reading the voice command rant and got curious, what do you guys think about the brain-machine-interface? Will it ever happen?
I would love it but also have some fears. Being able to control devices just by thought would be a huge time saver. But data mining is getting out of hand and that is scaring me. Companies would be able to analyze a lot.
Now they 'just' know what I am buying and which sites I am visiting.
If they know what I am thinking, Amazon would suggest me rubber gloves, body bags and whisky.7 -

Yesterday : I hate everyone in Microsoft that works on this funding visual studio that now crashing every time I open my project 😤I'm going to kill them

Python is a language I love to use. But after using a typed language I just so wanted that feature in Python. And guess what, there's already a project that does that - mypy! Static typing for Python. Just wow!1 -
I need cyclic data structures but algebraic data types are my first love and tying the knot is impossible with the eagerness F# has. The interfaces and classes I abandoned C# for are the ones I am now writing in F#. What a job well done on my part in avoiding mutability :(6

I don’t know if someone is following me. Well at least if you’re drunk and behave common you can expect the same treatment no matter what country you’re about to stop by. I hope if we start be polite the same way across the continent we can get the same understanding of our problems. Peace ✌🏽and love ❤️1

I just started on a Laravel project for a customer. Damn I’ve got a hate/love relationship with that thing.
I fucking love how fucking fast development is it in, even for fairly complex tasks, amazing.
I fucking hate how goddamn fucking slow development is when you get an error, as that shit is near impossible to debug, and you keep getting weird exceptions that you just need to know what means. -
What interesting uses for a VPS do you guys know?
I've setup my website on VPS and it only takes 25% of 256MB RAM, despite having mysql, apache2 and other cool things running (which is why I love Linux).
Any ideas what to do with 75% that's left?15 -
I was cleaning up the files on my computer and I found this path.
~/projects/hidey_hole/daus_ex_machina/
I love thies strangely named projects.
What is the weirdest name you have given to a project?6 -
Am I the only one that is very neutral while learning a new language or framework or whatever it may be? Like cause you have to go through the basics and you’re basically stuck copying what the tutorial, book, video, whatever source tells you to do and the best you can FUCKING do is change a few things. I love learning new stuff don’t get me wrong I love adding tools to my arsenal.
I just don’t know what else I could try to do because it’s new ground but I want to acknowledge I’m learning it by making my own small basic program with what I’ve been showed but there’s not enough to do different stuff and I have to go back to the tutorials and copying and I feel like I’m learning NOTHING it’s just a annoying feeling for me personally idk if anyone feels the same. Am I crazy? Or am I just doing something wrong?
Also to clarify the all caps “FUCKING” was because my phone changed it to ducking and I wanted to make sure autocorrect knew I meant what I meant.5 -
Just because I know Laravel, Django, Angular2 and React two companies are offering me double the salary I am getting now. But I love my current work place and I might get the amount here too but maybe after six or seven months. I love it because there are better developers here than me and I am learning a lot. Is my decision to stay ok? What would have you done?(btw I am staying anyway)4

You know just what I love my evening novel to be? Documentation of software, written by someone who clearly doesn’t understand what the fuck this is all on about. Literally created a cyclic paragraph (end of paragraph -> see also paragraph b : end of paragraph b -> see paragraph a) without having explained the concept at all.
Why just whyyy4 -
I just started learning java cause i have to because of uni, and i heavily used JS before , but somehow i really love the statically typed syntax and it brings so much clarity about what everything is doing.
Also love how object oriented everything is5 -
Ever since i graduated from college my mental state has drastically improved. I am no longer suicidal and i have will to live. Although my life is still pathetic and unsuccessful at least now i have the freedom to do what i love -- which is to fucking code and not study bullshit trash subjects4

Been thinking about this a lot and I'd love your thoughts. Recently a friend was starting in dev. They asked me for some advice. I just said "be humble and hungry". I've built my career on that phrase. Be willing to listen and willing to put in the work.
What is your best advice for the young devs out there?4 -
I just think about it ...
Running docker on windows is shit
Running nginix on windows is boofff
Running apache on windows is boofff
Running WWS on windows is hugly
Install linux
All server software run like king
Don't have access to any adobe product for design and micro$hit office for client sanity because ODF is to special, i want my docx i said ... Like what do you want from me ... Shit the dev setup is a fucking mess because some enterprises don't want to wet itself in the futur...
Microsoft love linux BULLSHIT6 -
10 Months ago i started with webdev. Before i never program at all, but i Fall in love. The only thing i hate about webdev is this.
dude:look at my Website?
me: how did you do this?
dude: i used 900000 frameworks. it was really easy.
me: ...
I know.. you don't need to reinvent the wheel, but if don't think about what actually happens, where is the fun??
i don't know if it is also the case in Software dev but i don't like the way it evolves6 -

As my apt renovation is nearly completed it's time to get all the cool toys. And that's where I need your ideas :)
what should I get? What techie-stuff would you think is worth considering?
I for one have wet dreams about vacuuming robots. Not a roomba ofc [bcz it ties to Apple], smth else. I get that an opensource robot would be a pipe dream, but I'd love smth I could control via bash scripts [prolly via lan] at least. Some api would be nice :) . Any advices here? How does it always go to this...
It is a rare occasion I get to be the only human being at home during evening time, so I really should make the most out of it (my own space and peace is really important to me, so living with another human being is exhausting, no matter how much I love them), yet I find myself yet again slouching on the sofa trying to figure out what to do and commenting on rants while time flies by and I find the hour so late there's no point in starting to do anything anymore...
What a waste of perfectly valid oxygen..2 -
Hating myself because I'm struggling to muster up the courage to program lately ... Work is ruining what I love :-(8
-
When you love to code so much that you get chronic lower back pain 😞 What do you guys and gals do when you get back pain? What is the best way you have found to avoid it?11
-
Some days I hate my work - other days I love it. Usually what happens is I make some poor decision that I have to live with and get super angry with myself, feel my colleagues are disappointed, go home, feel sad, sleep, go back, talk to them about it and try to learn from my mistakes - and then I'm back at loving work. Repeat. Software development is so much more than writing code.
-
I really do love programming, but I really do hate implementing features that will make the database and code way more messy and complex. Which would be fine, if I wouldn't be quite sure the feature is utter bullshit and the user just can't really frame what they need.
And yes, I've asked my boss if he's sure if that's what they want and if not the other feature I implemented will fit those needs too. Yes, he is sure that they're sure they need exactly said requested feature.4 -
Video game. Nothing but a final boss fight right from the start. Boss has infinite health. There is no time limit. If you die in the game, you die in real life.
That's what it's like to live with bipolar disorder.
For the love of god PLEASE keep yourself away from emotional stress and trauma. -
Dear Microsoft, I see what you were going for, and I love you for it; but for the love of god, please fucking fix the clusterfuck that is Nuget.
I use a private feed for client work, and I have the public source registered too, so why would installing a new .core template from Nuget fail just because it tried the private feed first and shit itself?
It really shouldn’t be this hard.
Sincerely,
Brolls -
Coding gameserver emulators. It's always fun to code for a game which you don't have to do any of the artistic side and all of the functionality side.
Also network packet sniffing and trying to figure out what each this is is pretty fun. Love it.2 -
Love it when there's only one SO question relating to the problem you have, there is no answer, a couple comments, and the person asking updates it saying he figured it out, WITHOUT GIVING ANY INDICATION AS TO WHAT THE SOLUTION IS.
Fucking hell, doesn't happen often, but when it does... 👿 -
You know what I fucking LOVE? Cross platform. I love working with shitty JavaScript CRAP that not only is interpreted (i.e. parsed and processed for EVERY user for EVERY execution) but is also just so fucking easy to debug. I love the fact that management is making not only architecture but technology decisions in the name of initial development time, forgetting that they are exponentially increasing maintenance time. I can't get over my affection for waiting for the bloody CI to build both platforms and because some fucker commits his shite straight to master blocks the generation of BOTH platforms artifacts.2

We here in India are going through a nightmare. We have our CS syllabus from 1990s, we still write lab records, and solve 10 pineapples problem for placement training. Nobody really bothers about actual skill or knowledge, are like sheep behind feed. Passion is taken for granted and overruled by the “experts”.
A good education in CS starts from the hunger to solve problems that would matter to people. Future of CS education is in online courses that give out ideas to generate more ideas and inspire programming not as a subject but as a basic need of the hour. People should love the fact that CS is queer in many ways but is very powerful. Basics are important but the education must hold on to what is currently happening in the world.
World will be doomed when we start making students study the same thing what we did, except it is called Math. A subject has to be dynamic. If anybody agrees what I say, spread it so that world will understand what learning means... -
I really love Ubuntu Mono and similar fonts, because they're nice to look at while coding, so I tried to use it in Emacs.
Man, what it produced is just... disgusting! I couldn't see anything even in Ubuntu Mono "normal" version (not bold, not italic) with size 10 (my normal size).
In smaller size I almost couldn't recognize characters in code, in bigger it yelled at me I'm blind. Wtf emacs...6 -
Hi guys, as I think this is the perfect good place to share point of view, I would love to know what do you think.
Years after years, people fight against hacks/piracy, like governments or video games editor.
Recently, we all heard about that piracy team who said that in the close future, breaking games protection would be impossible, yet the famous Denuvo (DRM) even if hard to break, is still broke few days/weeks after game release.
Here's what I think.
No matter what, hacking/piracy will always have steps ahead of protections. Because that's the way it is, the way it works. Maybe protections will be effective for a while, but there will always be somewhere, someone smart enough to break it. I start thinking that when a iPhone/Sony claims that they were safe and Geohot break their protections one by one.
There is no perfect protection.
(Quantum computers aside).
What do you guys think?3 -
Oh no, yeah, little error icons with no accompanying error messages are my absolute favorite, especially when there's no apparent way to check what the error is.

Post a rant and apologize cause he's using windows. What the heck is wrong with people here ? This trend is so annoying. Stop it you sheeps you have no reasons to love or hate any OS just following others to look cool. It's not cool unless you're in middle school. And those same guys mock apple fan boys the truth is you're no different. "Yours is shit coz mine iz z best".4

Fellow web devs, your favourite tool for coding ?
I use and love phpstorm because it prevents my 90% typos and provides code completion.
What tool do you use to improve your coding, and if there is any tool which you use to get more productive?14 -

I'd love some advice from you iOS devs on devRant:
- Is it a solid career choice for a new grad? Does it limit your skillset early on?
- How open/active is the ecosystem and the open source scene?
- Storyboards? Yay or nay?
- What do you like the most about your job?
- What do you dislike the most about your job?
Thanks guys :)4 -
Hi devRant community,
First of all, I'm so grateful and thankful for being part
of this awesome community. CHEERS!
I just wanna ask some advices from my super kind and awesome
pile of developers, what is the best thing to do if you're
stucked between creating a certain feature and a raging
girlfriend. I mean, my head is aching. I don't know what to do.
She needs time, but my first love which is programming also
needs much more of my time.

Please if you write a math book, don’t write it in a technical, boring, orthodox textbook. Write it like u want to share it with someone you love as a grandiose story of personal adventure. Write it as an exciting narrative. This is what the OGs did.5

Gotta love waking up to a notification from Apple Seed saying "iMac Pro is now available."
Since I did sales I knew some pricing ahead of time, but after looking at the upgrades and the max price, all I can say is, what the fuck.
Welp, that was enough of Apple for the day.4 -
It's probably no news that I love Typescript's versatile and powerful generics. Today I found what is probably the most brilliant use of these tools to solve a real problem. This package exports one generic type which takes one generic argument, reads it like a JSON schema and returns the Typescript type for it:

Why is programming life so terrible and shit. I don't mean I hate it, but it gets me FUCKING mad sometimes. I was writing a post full of "fuck" and "shit" words about vuejs error which has stucked with me for about 3 days and before posting it, my problem got solved. for the love of god... WHAT THE FUCK2

I love cortana, but it isn't officially supported on my phone due to region limits.
My question is, what Personal Assistant do you recommend?
I have looked into Ok Google, but that doesn't work on PC...
Siri just is a general nogo (see OS'es section)
Requirements:
- allow reminders
- allow quickly searching for something
- allow quickly opening an app (phone, PC is also nice)
OS'es:
- Windows 10
- Linux Ubuntu
- Android 86 -
I think taking your phone to the bathroom with you is socially acceptible, but may be the limits to what is. I love the oculus go portable vr goggles, but if I was caught taking those into the bathroom at work my name would be added to a list.1

I overcomplicated shit yet again.
Last year we had taken over a massive project, where the main problem was an abundance of design patterns. I was (who am I kidding, I still am) a newbie, and most patterns I'd seen the very first time. By the end of it I learned what they're good for, but now I love design patterns for what they are rather than the problems they solve. I write the same horror that I saw and I know full well how terrible it is, but I Just. Can't. Stop.
What do I do?2 -

What I love about devRant aren't only the rants but really the comments. In almost every rant the comet section is at least as funny ass the rant it self. This shows how awesome this community isch.
Don't drunk as much as me and I really do.enjoy being part of this aesome part of the interwebs.1 -
"What is the incentive to build open source software?" How do you answer this?
I love open source, but I can't seem to answer this.7 -
I love my job,
this is how my normal day goes:
me: *turns on computer*
computer: Good morning, erandria. What will your first sequence of the day be? -
New job is going exactly how I thought it would. The core code is actually pretty good but a lot more complex than what I’d dealt with before. I literally don’t know what I don’t know and my dev skills, especially OOP, are sub-par and I have VERY little time to brush up on them significantly before the big projects hit me like an oncoming train. If there is ANYONE else who has navigated this type of situation successfully, I’d love to hear your experiences.6

Is anyone here using something like "moqups"? I found it just recently and love the idea of it all being in one place with its own project folders, but the thing that is throwing me off is the money to what you get ratio, since it would be nice to have something that combines trello+adobe xd+flowcharts and more across devices with near unlimited space.2

let's call him Richie. Richie doesn't listen in team meetings, does not have any clue of what we are doing and what the important topics are. Richi is hiding between the cars in the parking house to not have to talk to you on the 2min way to the office. Richie is 'done' when he encounters any problems in his work so we have to do it. Yeah, we all love Richie...3

So . . . for the first time ever I feel like I'm a part of something I genuinely care about. I'm a Unity3D VR developer, albeit for a small company, which has me in and out of VR constantly most days as I test things. Pretty cool right?
Well here's the thing. For me . . . what I do is trivial in meaning. I love what I do, don't get me wrong, but what's so good about what I do, is that I am a valued team member. My opinion is heard, I am given freedom to innovate, and most importantly I am allowed to create!
So what did I do today? I started building a UI framework for Unity3D, the beginning of which dynamically binds zenject signals to UI elements, like a button's onClick for example. If anyone here has worked with Unity3D you probably can attest to the festering heap of dogs vomit that is Unity UI....2 -
Is it considered greedy when you are accepting job interviews even though you decently love your current job, have decent work balance and benefits and your boss trusts you?
I kinda feel bad being curious on what other companies have to offer for my skills but I don't necessarily plan to accept any new offer.4 -
Currently working in an office where my tasks are pretty boring and not fun at all. On one hand I wanna quit and get a job as a gamedev, cause that is what I truly enjoy and love doing, but on the other hand my current job is paying pretty good money, so it would kinda be a step back.
Maybe you guys got some tips or advice on what I could do?2 -
Hmm... Geekiest non-dev thing I do regularly is watch Mark Rober, Smarter Every Day, and Colin Furze videos. They can definitely be entertaining, but I do love seeing what they work on/research.
Don't really have desire to, for instance, build something with Raspberry Pi. But that's just me. 🤷1 -

I have an opportunity to speak to a large and well mixed group of web designers and developers plus _clients_ of designers and developers. Part of what I want to cover is what affects the client/professional relationship and project(s) in both positive and negative ways. I want to include your (dev/designer) real world perspective on that. So, please share a positive and/or negative client behavior or experience that typifies how hard it is to work with some clients and/or easy it is to work with others. If you have a solution that works well for bad situations, I’d love to add that to my presentation as well. THANKS!7

Stackoverflow...some love it some hate it. I personally really like and try and again as much as possible, but what thing that is really starting to annoy me is lack of upvoting on questions. People will happily down vote poor queations and tend to upvote and downvote answers appropriately but there seems to be huge lack positive feedback on good questions... It's very annoying. Anyone else agree?

What do you guys think is the best method to teach juniors web dev? What are some things that would make you love a uni class and learn it?
I am teaching web dev and I find it very hard to engage all the students as almost half of them are not interested and I think they see the class too difficult(web basics?!). This is my first class teaching and I want to gather some feedback here and implement it in my class.
So, basically let me know of anything that makes you love and hate abclass because of the teacher's methodology. Thanks a lot3 -

Hi fellow DevRanters! I've been studying software engineering for a while now and, while I love programming, I'm starting to think that all I'll be doing as a software engineer now a days is pulling data from a database, sticking it in a nice gui with some buttons and moving on to the next, similar, project. At the same time I am loving linux more and more, I love working with bash and other unix-like tools and I am interested in systems languages like C and Rust. It is for these reasons that I am playing with the idea of switching to Systems and network engineering. What are your thoughts on this? Is Systems and network engineering a field in which I get to program a lot? Will there be more variation in it? Is my view of software engineering completely off? Please share your thoughts and opinions! -

I need some help, does someone know what is a good way to get a legit linux sysadmin certification? I've been using linux for a couple years now and i'd like to have it on my (baren) resumee :D
I freakin love this community btw, its hilarious -
I love what I do, I love designing and building well-crafted software, and so it eats up a lot of my time.
I constantly remind myself that, while being a software developer is a good profession, it is not enough for me. I am focused on building products that offer real value, in return for money. Because, capitalism...
I remind myself that money doesn’t raise itself, technically-excellent networks full of possible partners and employees don’t build themselves either.
Therefore, I force myself to go be social from time to time.
But it is a struggle, that I don’t do a good enough job with! So I’m going to do better this summer -
Always love debating different switches with coworkers. What is your favorite blues, browns, reds, or some other type of switch?
Personally, I am a fan of Cherry Blues.1 -
0. I love to solve puzzles. It makes me feel smart. While the act of coding isn't itself problem-solving, programming as a whole generally is.
1. Computers are easier to understand than people. A computer will always do what you tell it to do, it just may not be what you INTENDED it to do.
2. I enjoy having a skill that most people find intimidating. It lends mystique to my otherwise boring-sounding life. -
I have a long question for developers out there... bear with me.
I'm currently learning and devoting all my time towarda Java and have been for the past two years although it's moving slow because of summer courses. The catch to this is, I'm not sure what I'm learning it for. How do I implement this code, I'm not sure what to do with it. The only project I plan on doing is a discord server management bot... besides that, I'm blank... Is java used in web development? What exactly should I be using it for..?
I'm planning on learning javascript, php, mySQL, and CSS I pretty much have down but I don't know what to use them for. Besides how I want to script for the game Hackmud which is in javascript.
I'll put it into simpler terms... I love java and I'm looking forward to mastering it but I don't know what to use it for. I want to use it on my free time and all but use it for what? One more thing: what other languages go hand in hand with java? Sorry if it's confusing lol.3 -
For coding advice
Don't stop thinking
Keep asking how and why a thing works
Learn the logic
Pick any one language
Write some code, do mistake, fix, learn and repeat
Do keep a balance of coding and real life ,playing games are necessary
Do exercise as well....
Maybe some more things we can , but most important is
Do what you love not what others love.
It's your life live and code your way... -
Coding made me who I am now. I have a much more organized mind and critical though. I have some new skills that are really useful when it comes to job hunting. I'm proud to do what I do, even if it's not that much. I love learning, coding just fits my style.
I am grateful that I started doing it, there's one big downside to coding though. We all know what it is: USERS!
Going back to drinking some coffee. Oh yea, that's how coding changed my life ;) -
I always love when I pick C again just for fun. I'm really used to "print" something if I'm not sure about that in basically everything.
You wanna print something in C? Well unless you know what and where it is (no point of print-checking then), it'll just happily crash without any reported error. Not to mention if I wanna find a bug, I don't have to get a debugger! Printf alone is basically a breakpoint! Ah stupid me :D -
What is your preferred IDE?
I feel the most comfortable in Visual Studio and have heard from many others that VS is their IDE of choice, but I've also heard other people shame VS users and opt for something like Notepad++ or even no IDE at all, just a basic text editor. Granted, I'm not gonna back down from VS, I love it, but I really want to hear what other people like to use?13 -

Why Linux Mint feels like a teenager who doesn't want to grow up and be a real man?
Over the years Linux mint is what it is and i can assure you will be in the upcoming hundred years, it's so boring by default, it is based on Ubuntu, if that's the case why the devs are re-inventing something worse than ubuntu, people will argue, it comes with customization, okay, do you call few extensions a gateway to customization? I installed it in a VM and customized it to what i almost wished for however, it still feels like a child who spoiled his room over and over, is that the best thing the devs can make? I try my best to love it but from the inside there is no love, it's like your girlfrienr who you pretend to love but you are disguised....
Guys why you are using such distro?11 -
I recently bought a XPS 15 and it came with Windows, but I'm thinking of putting Linux instead and maybe have a Windows VM.. I love Linux for dev and customization but Windows is just easy to game on. What is your experience on gaming on Linux ?10

So I'm currently working for a school as an IT person. I love my job but it's only part time and low wage. I also go to college 2 classes a semester.
I love what I'm doing and I love the team I work with but it can also be extremely stressful (beginning of school year). I also don't know where there is to go in terms of advancement other than going full time.
Although I don't want too I'm thinking about looking at other jobs again and trying to see if I can find something better. But at the same time I'm earning a pension at the school and I'm really enjoying what I do except for the stress.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? What should I do? Should I stay? Should I leave? Or should I stay but work on my open source contributions and hope that those earn me a better job in development?2 -

But here's the thing. I think I'm gonna get a ThinkPad and just install fedora on it. It's far cheaper and outside of only going up to 16GB of ram it meets all my needs.
But between you and I a big factor in why I'm finding it hard to go Mac is the system settings. Like why is it like that? Why when I click something a separate window opens.....odd.6 -

Hope everyone is doing well & of course staying safe, Well today i'd love to get some opinions and some advice. I've been using Mac OS and Win10 for quite a while now and would love to move on and perhaps try something new :-) Linux Mint or Ubuntu, Would love to know Which one would you recommend? as far as i'm aware it's basically just look and feel that makes the difference? Also what possible skills can i learn from using them? :-)
Thank you for taking the time to read my question! i appreciate it heaps!
Cheers :-)19 -
I am happy with my work and love it. I want to find my passion outside work. Can someone suggest me good books to read or something else. I don’t know what is my interest except work?7
