For some, Jan 01 1970 was just the first day of a new year. For others, it marked the beginning of time.8

We were given a MacBook in the beginning. Yesterday, appreciating my work, my manager gave me a MacMini to make my own server for testing purpose. I joined just two weeks ago. 😃19

How do i learn coding in single night? - someone asked me.
I gently replied : Pack your Laptop, and travel to North Pole in beginning of winter, you'll have 6 month of night to learn coding.
Once there - really just Google it there are tons of Excellent tutorials on web.6 -
While helping my son with his C++ homework I noticed there was an actual shit ton of warnings in the teacher's code.
I'm beginning to think there is some merit in the maxim, "He who can does. He who cannot, teaches."
Uhheesh.3 -
Here’s what I came up with.
Don’t treat a semicolon as an end of the line but rather as a possibility of a new beginning.
Inspirational right? LOL9 -
I'm beginning to get burned out on coding in general due to work-related stresses.
Is anyone hiring remotely?
Please?
Will code in Ruby/Node/React for food ☹27 -
"Google does it". I hate that sentence. It's always the beginning of an unreasonable expectation.
Perhaps if we had as much devs as Google we could do it too. But we are 2 devs spread over 15 projects, so fuck off.8 -
That moment when the client is actually happy with your design. From the beginning.
And requests no changes.6 -
I came to my sister's husband, programmer, and asked him for a book to learn how to program. He gave me a giant tome (probably to scare me out) and I read it page by page doing all the tasks. For me it was like a magic, I couldn't believe that I can write something in the notepad and then see computer do stuff because I told it to do so.5

Visual Studio 2017rc is so good that I'm beginning to hate 2015.

Dear Microsoft,
It's been almost 2 days since you have asked me to update to Windows 10, I'm beginning to get a little worried, is everything ok?2 -
I just discovered that you can tap the title of devRant app to load new rants instead of just scrolling to the beginning to make a pull to refresh :( FML10

The security blog is up again, I fixed the bug.
Just wondering, why did it work in the first place? I simply required a composer autoloader twice but I've been doing that from the beginning and it didn't play up until last night...
I guess it shall remain a mistery 😞82 -

Finally finished the blanket I’ve spent a month crocheting without a pattern after teaching myself to crochet at, like, the beginning of the month. It’s huge (this is it laying on a King sized bed) and I made so many mistakes that seem super obvious now, but I’m still weirdly proud of it.8 -
In the beginning programming was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.1

When I was in school I had some guys walk up to me and asked:
G: Are you Feeno?
Me: Yes, what's up?
G: We need our FY project on school management system done.
Me: Okay?
G: How much will that cost us?
Me: *confused because I was still a freshman. At that point the only programming language I knew was elementary qbasic. I couldn't even write a hello world program without the help of Google*
So played along because yes we're talking about money here.
Me: It will cost you guys N amount of money (*improvised deep voice*).
G: Okay. Fair price.
* Right there they transferred half the requested amount to me. *
Holy moly! This guys aren't joking around. I don't know shit! They clearly mistook me for a senior student whose first name is Feeno, to me that was a nick referred to me by my friends.
I'm in this one for sure and it's a do or die transaction cus I'm returning no fucking money. I told my friends what had happened and they insisted I return back the money to the students and admit I can't deliver the project they were requesting.
Fuck all of yah! I'm keeping this money. Same afternoon I visited the school library with the intension of writing the code using the help of YouTube tutorials. I didn't find anything useful for qbasic as I thought I could write a full fledged school management system using qbasic.
I was lucky enough to find an existing source code on Codeproject, God bless that Indian guy. The source was in PHP and the tutor gave a step by step guide to setup XAMP and MySQL. I really don't know PHP but I guess source code modification is a natural skill to all programmers as I was able to modify the code to meet the requirements of the students (i.e school name, logo and other minor changes).
Most of what I learnt in programming came from modifying the source of that project. I learnt how to connect a PHP source to a MySQL database, I learnt about functions and their usage, I learnt the basics of HTML, I really learnt a lot and I would say that the speed at which I learnt was proportional to the amount of pressure I received to deliver.
That was how my journey as a full stack developer started. By chance maybe.2 -
1. Decide to learn optimisation algorithms
2. Realise that you have forgotten calculus
3. Decide to learn from the beginning
4. Search for tutorials
5. Go through the introduction parts
6. You know that you can't complete
7. You watch other entertainment things on YouTube.

Learning to code at the University was quite annoying in the beginning. We had to write code on paper.
Might be the usual way, yet it was really inconvenient.25 -
The only technique I know.
Get hired straight out of uni. Project architect disappears right at beginning and I am left as a graduate employee to build a travel booking web app. Learning new front end and backend frameworks by coding them constantly for the next 8 months.
We might actually get this project done!5 -

Recently started using Linux for software development and it is waay easier to get things done than on windows. As a beginner in CS and a total Windows person, I am beginning to really enjoy Linux. I will definitely install a dualboot on my Laptop for the new semester in school.7

I eat food. And I cook food. Believe it or not, cooking is very similar to coding. Things you do at the very beginning haunt you till the very end. Also, premature optimization is the root of all evil (in both domains).4

We have a lamp with a dimmer.

I open the dimmer, check all connection, bullshit what is wrong?

Finally.... I check the bulb 💡 and... burned...

In a test software that I'm working on, there is a variable at the very beginning which has a comment "Don't change this variable!".
Hidden within the code is function to check the value. If the test user change it, a giant ಠ_ಠ appears on the screen.
No one will complain, but I can hear the gasps and the sudden chair movements... 😈1 -
I loved her from the beginning.
I devoted so much of my time to her. She told me her heart doesn't point to anyone. Yet I tried to reach her.
Everytime I ask her what's wrong, she gives me the same answer. I tried to be different. I changed things. Yet she said the same thing again today: "Segmentation fault (core dumped)"4 -
Vim is super easy, guys! You don't use arrows to navigate around the text, that's too obvious! Instead you use HJKL keys, because it goes Hup, Jleft, Kright and Ldown. You can also use B to go Beginning and E to go to End of the word, oh and W to go to the WstartOfNextWord.21

At the beginning of April there were 9 of us in Ops, come May there will only be 3 of us left. :/
They've left because they disagreed with some the CTO was trying to do and he fired them, or just because they hate him. Every week it's a new game of "Who's going this time?". -
Doesn't it feel just awesome when your project is going on smoothly since the beginning...I've completed around 80 percent and haven't been stuck in anything major yet for more than half a day. It's not much I know but for me it is and right now I feel like the queen of coding ^_^4

Somebody deleted all tables so we had to get a backup from out hoster.
Thanks MySQL.1 -
*Senior Dev:* Ah yes, we need to put try-catch in every function to handle errors and Logger.Log() at the beginning.
*Me:* Is not better to define a global error handler and use the stacktrace instead of doing all that?
*Senior Dev*: ...
*Senior Dev*: Is a rule here, do what I'm telling you.3 -
The internet got so broken with these gdpr-popups, it just isn't fun anymore.
If it didn't razz you right in the beginning, you know it's going to happen in a few seconds.1 -
You know your expertise is increasing when you're working on your side project for over a year, and you thought the code you wrote in the beginning was so awesome and such a master piece. Now, one year later you realize it's shit.3

I always found this video a must-watch for game-developers.
It's a long video, and he kinda sounds like a fanboy at times (especially in the beginning).
But he makes some great points about the modern gaming industry.
So if you're a game developer, or someone interested in games, and you have 30 minutes of spare time; here's an interesting video:

Just finished my first programming project and I couldn't be more excited for what's to come in the future 😄 also it's 3:30 and I've got class at 8:35...6

I'm a big fan of 'as' keyword in Python. It makes importing packages in the beginning of the code so slick.
Instead of doing:
> import what
> what.does.the.fox.say()
You can neatly do:
> from what import does.the.fox as fox
> fox.say() -
Great... Now I'm beginning to get empty Facebook notifications. Time to uninstall I guess, because this is fucking annoying!6

You know what sucks? Being forced by your teacher to use his crappy e-learning platform which isn't even close to final and therefore completely buggy. Oh you clicked in that compiler window? Nah now you can't click back in the editor window, better save and reload the page again. And thats only the beginning...5

Working on an AI that learns to generate quatrains, by only feeding it every letter of the alphabet at the beginning.
It's learning super slowly, but theoretically it works. And with slowly I mean it takes 5000 iterations just to realize the optimal letter frequency to generate a word that is real.
Please just kill me.2 -
So today at the beginning of the class, our teacher asked us to write a function that translates a given string to "leet speak" (basically having to replace every character to another).
Some used python dictionnaries, some used arrays...
And the two people arround me wrote a program with a condition for EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER.
It kind of made me wanna die or kill them 😥7 -
What kind of a fucked up company that has a 9 interview process in a 3 month period and sends the rejection email without a single line of feedback?
They are a fucking startup, not Google! Not even close to a company like Google!!
It's my mistake that I put up with their shit from the beginning but I didn't know any better.4 -
Spend 10 minutes patiently waiting for a progress bar to gradually make its way to the end, only to reset to the beginning and start all over again. Realize you actually have NO idea what the actual progress is or how long this is going to take and that the first progress bar was actually just representing the progress to this realization.

Now I can finally say that Linux is the best os I've ever used.
It's is just awesome. Everything can be controlled here easily. No fuss in installing and stuff. I wish I had started using this OS right from the beginning. Thank you to all the members of Linux community.
Linux community raise your hands up.7 -
now I’m starting to understand why unit testing is helpful as I’m making more and more features to the existing system I’m beginning to realize that the more shit I add the more chances I have of the existing components to fucking break for no reason this is very annoying and time-consuming11

In the beginning when windows 11 was released, I was really sad that my laptop couldn't support it. But now that I see people complaining about windows 11 most of the time, specially my colleagues, I feel thankful that my PC wouldn't be auto updated to windows 11 😇7

So I recently wacthed Prison Break
Right in the beginning, Michael takes the hdd out of his computer and throws it out the window

At the beginning of my IT career I was so desperate to get into this field that I even read a PHP 4.3 intro book and applied for a php dev role
yes, I was THAT desperate. Good thing I wasn't hired.2 -

Now I'm just concerned about my mental health.5 -
I love the idea of automating day to day activities in hacky ways (e.g. the beginning of back to the future).

At the beginning of programming the languages were complex and you had to think like a machine to do what you had in mind. Now code is art, it's like a poem. That's why some people (including me) when drink a beer or a cup of wine do better code.
Cheers, devs!2 -
I need to be more professional. As such, my sticker phase is beginning to come to a close. Pls don't kill me9

IBM, because I work in there.
Well maybe it wouldn't be as bad if I didn't work at command centre. From the beginning I did my best to get a promotion, but it resulted in me having shitton of workload and no raise. Maybe it's just shitty management tho. But still. -
Me:To my new boss I think its fare we adopt version control for the project we working on.
Boss: No need just do what we hired you for.

I'm working on it at school, it's like how to do OOP in C with structures and function pointers.
We're developing the String class but next, we will make a basic C++ implementation in C before beginning the real C++
Do you think it's a good path?5 -

On monday I had to present my 3D graphics assignment to a teacher at uni. I was very nervous at the beginning, but the presentation turned out very well. They liked my project so much that they told me that I could help with one of their research projects, and they even offered me a teacher/demonstrator position. Is this reality or am I dreaming?4

What seemed like a simple task of upgrading our angular project and adding universal to it, is slowly beginning to feel like an impossible mission.

They said gpt got it wrong on the third question, but what it actually looks like is gpt3 used zero indexing and started from the end of the string instead of the beginning.
While gpt4 began at the start of the string, and also used zero-based indexing.
Makes a lot of sense actually, considering it was trained on a lot of code.6 -

The beginning of my small app. Just a small question to the devRant community. As I am relatively new in Android app development I was wondering which layout is okay to work with?
The reason behind this question is that I have found that sometimes I'd move a component(e.g., button, text field) by a small fraction and boom! everything else is messed up.11 -

At the beginning of a project, everybody has lots of good intentions- call them "new project resolutions." ... Once the project gets underway, though, these good intentions are abandoned, one at a time. I hated Java and was skeptical about C# in the beginning (I never code in C# during my early college years).
But when I tried coding in C# as a requirement for our internship this month, I was like "fuck Java (seriously), C# is the shit!"1 -
Is this the beginning of the end? Seems like devRant ++ is bugged. Payment for April was taken but I'm nolonger a ++ member.16

Hey devs! What is your favorite OS for developping??
I'm actually using win10 and loving it. It's beginning to look a lot like Linux (i'm talking about ergonomy).
But I want to reinstall another Linux OS to code and i'm wondering if you have fast and goodlooking Linux distribution for me.15 -
Any U.S. Americans here who can confirm the stories about "U.S. Americans beginning to stock Up on guns and ammo"?
I mean it sounds plausible but it's surely mostly overblown by the media, right? RIGHT?!20 -
I wake up with so much interest and enthusiasm for programming and tech. It all goes away when I start work at 9 AM. Everyday at 5 PM, I question my career choices. I don't have the interest from the beginning of the day nor the energy to do anything.4

Beginning my dev career in a few weeks. Now it's the time to decide which weapons I should bring to the war.

Polyamory is weird and I'll never fully understand it. Every polyamorous relationship I've ever been in ended with my partner demanding monogamy weeks into the relationship, despite us setting firm boundaries and expectations at the beginning
And when I say demanding, I mean "be exclusive to me or never speak to me again", and these are folks that were staunchly poly at the beginning17 -

I just started working on my second project to learn web development and I feel extremely proud over what I've achieved so far. Although the site I'm working on isn't completely finished, I've got a feeling that this is the beginning of a great journey. Please comment what you think about it so far and I'd be a happy man.

How competent I feel today experiencing the WebDev world?
I've nearly gone insane editing my CSS code, not noticing any changes at all on my website whilst spamming F5.
Luckily, before I was beginning to plan my suicide, I realized that I was editing SCSS the entire time, having my auto-compiler turned off.5 -
Passwords are limited to 8 characters and stored in plain text. In the beginning of the year they give your password in a little piece of paper... I just gave up and started using my name as the password...

There are so many viruses out there that claim to be automatic windows driver updaters that I'm beginning to wonder if legit ones exist at all! Anyone have any experience with the real deal?4

Unstableness of core technology stack. The more developers are there, the more complicated architecture they create that often doesn’t give any significant value besides what if something goes wrong ?
What if you make mistake ?
What if power goes down ?
I feel I am last optimistic thinking software developer on this planet.
I feel that those tools just try to give some sort of power to the management over developer free mind.
Creatures like multicloud, cloud, k8s I feel that it’s just beginning not the end of road. And this beginning is a wrong turn.
It’s just another vendor lock in.
But I might be wrong.3 -
Man it is retarded how VS re-aligns your precompile statements to the BEGINNING OF THE FUCKING LINE EVERY TIME YOU ADD A NEW ONE.
Why does it do that in the first place, it looks ugly when it’s not in-line with the code, fucking stop it. -
#TIL that you can navigate part of your Linux commands with CTRL like CTRL+A gets you to the beginning of the typed command, CTRL+D deletes the forward command and CTRL+E gets you to the end of the typed command.

After weeks of burning the candle at both ends you finally get a good night's sleep.
You wake up and either have a skin condition or a beard had grown and you didn't notice. All joints sound like a bowl of rice crispies when you move and you're seriously beginning to identify with Rip Van Winkle. -
Pro tip: don’t accept a meeting with a potential employer for the beginning of your holidays (I know, ’muricans, you don’t get this concept where basically everyone taked paid vacation for several weeks during summer) so that you’ll end up thinking about whether to jump ship or not for most of your holidays, effectively ruining your time to potentially relax for you.
Just don’t do it. -
There is a moment in a project where you either tell everybody that they have fucked up everything and a new beginning is necessary... Or you will be the one who's getting fucked in the end as 'the constant warnings and delays were communicated, but not offensive enough to be of major importance.'

My Dad! He used to write private projects in Clipper an dBASE and was quite successful.
At the age of 10 I asked him why I couldn't play games (he was on the pc)... and he showed me then stuck the dBASE book in my hand and told me to design an inventory system for his garage...
That was the beginning4 -
Me at the beginning of the project: I should start by writing tests
Me after a couple of days: No time to write tests! GOTTA WRITE THAT CODE
Me now: Oh, yes, I should have written those tests at the beginning2 -
Build test project in VS, all tests are visible in test explorer.
Make a trivial change and build, all tests disappear.
Restart VS and rebuild, all tests visible.
Make another trivial change and build, all tests disappear.
I'm beginning to think VS isn't very good.5 -

Python is really beginning to turn horrible now. Legacy codes...argh!! why don't developers move already to python3? and all those horrible third party dependencies for only 2 which somehow break after even some mending. God save them. Horrible night.2

I think professors should relate computational processes to mathematical ones more often. This helped me out at the beginning a lot when learning CS through the internet during high school.
I remember that a lot of the computational logic made sense to me because of math.
e.g. functions, comparators, variables, for, and, xor, sets, trees, sorting, searching etc.
A lot of these topics are hard to teach for beginning computer scientists. But I think if professors made the relationship with math from the beginning it would be easier for the students
I dont know if teachers already do this but the first time I had a professor relate math to code was while taking data structures in my second year of college1 -

Using Bloodshed Dev-C++ and not wanting to change that for Visual Studio.
Transistion for VS wasn't simple, as I learned from the beginning od Dev-C++ and amount of 'hacks' that worked in DevC++ and didn't in VS were frustrating me. After a while I understood that DevC++ was a bad first choice IDE and things it did shouldn't have place, but habits die hard I guess.
Still like the lightweigh it had, tho. Wish VS was so simple in use at the beginning. :)1 -
So time for some stories!
DevRant Masters, what did you find the most Challenging when starting out as a dev?
For me it wasnt actually writing good code, it was more about finding out WHERE to write it, in this clusterfuck of shared projects inside projects.1 -
Been up all night with the screaming shits and chest pains (acid reflux), my dad's told me either i pay off his car in full (i'm unemployed and need $100k or so) by the end of the month or i'm homeless, and my computer's beginning to have issues as my GPU's warping under its own weight (and I can't afford another R9 380.)15

Now suddenly their requirement is to have scheduled sync and it is "As we discussed in the beginning".1 -
Sometimes it gets really annoying when your client tells you to do something in the beginning and you do it, but towards the end of the project they want us to do something else.
