Dear dfox,
Thank you for not making your app completely change layouts and screw up scrolling whenever we turn on our sides when reading rants in bed, unlike nearly every mobile web browser out there. We all really appreciate it.

When CS professors are lazy to grade so they think they can just give you any grade without you questioning them...
Me: Hi Professor, I see I got a 94 out of 100 on my 2nd project. Your comments said, some of my functions didn't pass your junit test cases.
Prof: Yes!
Me: How come? I tested it several times before submitting and they all passed the test cases. You gave us the test cases to write the code for.
Prof: Yeah, but some of your functions aren't passing on mine.
Me: Since I'm in your office, can you please run it again so I can see?
Prof: Are you doubting me? I gave you the project and I'm telling you they're not passing my test cases.
Me: I just want to make sure because I did work really hard on this project to pass all the test cases. *Runs the code to show him on my laptop and they all pass*
Prof: Fine, let's run it together on mine again. *He runs it and they all pass on his laptop*..hmm, that's weird. They didn't pass when I ran them. Maybe, because of the IDE I used earlier.
Well, looks like you get your 100.
Me: Thank you but which IDE did you ran it in that failed? Just wondering..🤔
Prof: Doesn't matter now...they're passing. Just be ready for your next project...you guys will be writing the test cases yourself this time..9 -

So whatever you are in, wherever you are and however you feel, just rant it out. 😄 And remember that we are one tap away from you.
For that devrant creators and most of all each and everyone of you have my eternal thank.72 -
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for waiting for this new release of avatar items! We have new pets, new computers, new eye wear, some fun shirts and a special treat for our #1 ranter @linuxxx. The required ++ pts for these are a little higher than normal to reward the dedicated people who have helped support and build this community over the last few years. Thank you all!33

Lady calls me asking for help with her website.
First thing she does is trash all FIVE of her previous developers for "never completing the project."
No, thank you. Take your crazy somewhere else. Buhbye.4 -
People going to the doctor: "I'm sick, and here are all my symptoms in detail."

Thank you so much to all the contributors, especially @Dacexi for designing the app and @sirwindfield for setting up our build infrastructure.
We plan to add more features in future. For example, searching rants, edit/delete rants or comments and most importantly, themes. Right now it has a dark theme by default.
Thank you to the users to opened issues on GitHub during development. Your feedback has helped a lot.
Whenever you find a bug or want a new feature, please open a new issue on GitHub and we will look into it.
Contributors are always welcome. I am still working on writing a article about the structure of the application, I will let you guys know when that is done. It will be easier for you to contribute when you have a bigger picture.

Boss: I need to talk to you.
Me: Something wrong?
Boss: No, just need to talk.
(Not sure what to think)
Meet with boss, first thing he does is shake my hand and proceeds to tell me thank you for all the work you or in on the last project. On tomorrow in addition to your paycheck $1K after taxes will be deposited into your account.
#feeling very appreciated5 -
Sorry if I make a typo, my hands a still a little shaky, just had to stop myself from crying.
This morning I came in, opened my email, saw an automated response from Jira saying .... saying ..... saying the backend team provided details about their new endpoint.
After a year of screaming, they finally did it. It was so beautiful I fell to the floor and wept like a baby.
Thank you all for your support through this difficult time. Together we can accomplish anything!!!7 -
Oh yeah. Hey guys. 2 things.
First off. Forgot to say. Officially got a job. Finally. So thank you for all the help/advice and patience with my depressive rants!!
I'm in a new chapter of my life now so thanks.
And secondly.
I FUCKING HATE MY JOB6 -
Is devRant Just for rants?
I see such a Great community here that goes way beyond complaining about PMs and users (even though you're all right, usually). I've read comments about support for depression, Anxiety, people being supportive of woman and downvoting/commenting against the common sexism that we see on the internet every single day. We have fun, we all feel like friends even though we can remember only a few names and stumble uppon them once in a while. We mostly understand each other and it all feels like a huge family. It's a Great thing to help throughout all of the struggles I have daily in Life, and I bet many people here feel the same.
Thank you all so much for making devRant this Great community. Papa bless.13 -
Client : your design is not cool. See this ^
*showed me some pretty neat designs pattern*
Me: which type do you want for your application.?
Client : All are pretty cool. Isn't it?
Me : Yes. But you do not need all of them. Right?
Client : Yes.
Me : So, which one.
Client : I'm confused But, this will do.
Me : Sure?
Client : Yes, very much.
After 3 days.
Client : you know what, earlier one was simple one but, best one. Easy to understand. This is (new design) making it complex. I need previous one.
Me : (I knew you'll say that, a**hole.) Just go to setting and select theme section to earlier version.
Client : thank you man.
Me : (You are red listed in my book you a**hole. Say anything else to add/edit and then see.) You are welcome.6 -
I just realized 1/4th of devRant has tried devRantron ✌
I just wanted to thank everyone, this has been an amazing experience and I've learnt a lot from it. We have some really cool features comming down the pipeline.
I love all of you ♥️13 -
External company HR: We are sorry to hear you've decided to turn down our offer. You made a great impression and we thought you'd be a good fit. If you change your mind please let us know.
Me: I too am sorry you didn't tell me you were moving to the other-side of the county in two weeks, making it impossible for me to travel to and from work. I too have feelings about having done all the interviews and this being the end result. Thank you8 -
IT: Its controlled via SSO, everyone has access by default
Me: oh i'm sorry, you are correct, I don't have an error message on my screen saying I don't have access. I made it all up. Thank you, you may close the support ticket2 -
Job offer: "All employees will be provided Macbooks"
Nope! Just nope.
Let your dev chose their equipment, thank you very much.
If they want a Linux laptop, buy them one. If they want a Windows workstation, give it to them. And if and only if they want a Macbook, give them a Macbook.
I used to work in two companies having the requirement to use a Macbook for two years.
I know its pros. I know its cons. My conclusion for me: Never again!13 -
This is where everything started. I got the chance to work with actual production code. While it is very fun to work with, in some places it's also very frustrating. And this is from where, most of my rants come from.
Thank you @dfox and @trogus for making such a beautiful community.
The best part of this community is I never have to think or take time to make jokes or posts so that I can get upvotes. I've always wanted likes or retweets or reddit upvotes. But it never worked out because I have to think so much to make clever comments or posts. Most of the time, I gave up.
But in devRant, all I do is just share what's happening in my daily dev life. My frustrations, my happiness. That's all it takes. Everyone understands, everyone cares and everyone loves.
Over time, thanks to devRant, I've understood that I was part of the wrong community. This is the community that I deserve, this is the community that every dev deserves.
Thank you all. I love you. And I promise, more rants are coming :D
Especial thanks to @Yeah69 @kevbost @yarwest @tisaconundrum @Linux @donkeyScript . I have no idea why you guys all of a sudden rapidly upvoted me. Although I would love to reach 10k naturally but won't complain haha8 -
So I met Lew from unbox therapy, when he came for the one plus 5T star wars launch event to India.
Just wanted to share that, he's one of the most down to earth celebrities. And even with all of that fame and stardom he still lends an ear for everything you want to say. He also motivated me to start my own YouTube channel. He made my day 😅.
Thank you Lew 😍.22 -
Welp, I just turned 18 :)
I joined this place when I was roughly 16. I spent nice 2 years here. :)
I saw more people join and have fun and not be toxic. I've made friends here and this community supported me like literally no one had before. I felt like when I was down, people listened and people answered. People wrote funny rants and posted memes which helped me out when I was sad and I didn't know how to rant about it. Everyone here is kind. Everyone here is cool.
I would like to thank you all for being here all this time and I hope to keep seeing all of you here for my next birthday :D9 -
@dfox I just want to say thank you !
Most of my friends are not devs at all. Thanks to you, I can share my adventures to people that actually understand what I'm talking about.
This is priceless.9 -
Coding helped me make it this far. Everything in my life has been falling apart lately. My girlfriend left me to marry some other guy. My family's 20years old business shutdown. Things got very rough at work too. Unlike real life, coding makes sense to me. Everything is under control. It is a place where you build beautiful things the way you like them and help others. It has helped me take my mind off all the negativity and has given me a new perspective to life. Everything has a logic behind it. I can calm myself down by realizing the reasons behind the events happening in my life.
I love reading all the rants here. Thank you guys.3 -
I was drinking my tea when I read this. Now it's all over my screen. xD
Thank you for making me laugh, James, whoever you are.1 -
Email from a company I applied To:
"Hi... We will be in touch by the 7th of November"
Me:... It's December already. Maybe I missed it.
Second email: "Sorry! Typo. It's meant to say 7th of November. Refer to this instead"
Me: ...
THIRD email: "So sorry. Or mailing system is failing so disregard all those emails and refer to this one. Thank you."
Me: ... WHERE THE FUCK IS THE DATE!??6 -
This fucktard of a 'stick that facility management up your arse' manager.
He insisted 'no cooling required. Trust me'.
While we insisted 'how dare you to asume our servers temperatures'!
We moved our servers to a new /tmp/office/ yesterday. Was quite fun, until we saw this...
Doorhandle is hot as fuck, 50 degrees air temperature, all servers in heat error state. Thank you, you damn fucktards! Take this cactus 🌵 and stick it up your arse!!
Can't work like that.13 -
7th feb : Spend rose day by explaining my 10th grade nephew how to draw "rose" in c++.
8th Feb: nephew calls me and said thank you, his classmate agreed to go on a date with him.

⚡️ devRantron v1.4.1 ⚡️
I strongly urge all the users of the devRantron to upgrade their app. We have added some major features and made a lot of bugfixes. For example:
1. Edit Rants and Comments
2. Browse Weekly
3. Save drafts of rants so that you can edit and post them later. Also, the app now autosaves when you are typing a new rant and will keep it until you post it.
4. Fixed macOS startup. Previously the app used to open a terminal in the background to launch the app. That has been removed.
5. Confirmation before deleting a rant or comment
6. Huge performance optimization. We have upgraded to React 16 and also changed the way our compiler compiles the application. The way we fetch the notifications has also been changed and it uses less bandwidth.
7. The app will only have single instance now. If you accidentally open the app again, it will just switch to the currently running instance.
8. We now show a release info dialogue before updating. Linux and macOS users will now receive an update notification for new updates.
9. Added the ability to select rant types.
You can get it from here: https://devrantron.firebaseapp.com/
macOS users, please remove the devRantron from "Login Items" in Settings > Users and Groups.
We would like to thank all our users for giving us the feedbacks. If you like the app, you can show your appreciation by giving a start to the repo.
Thank you!23 -
Just wanted to say a 'thank you' to all people who bear with my privacy stuffs! I know quite some people who installed messaging apps, signed up to privacy services and so on, solely because --> I <-- want to communicate in private and I realise (I've always realized that though) that that can be tough sometimes.
Also a thank you to those people for not requiring me to get data fed into the big companies :).
Thanks!24 -
I just wanted to shout out to everyone here and say that I really appreciate how great everyone here really is. I've posted rants in the past on dev subreddits and I've always received harassment for one reason or another. In my whole time here, I don't remember running into anyone who was nearly as verbally abusive as those on Reddit. Thank you all for being you and please continue to do so.3

Since I discovered devRant, looks like I stopped using instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
I love this community so much!!
It even has functions facebook and instagram doesn’t have!
Thank you @dfox and all the others! Hope it continues like this!
Thanks devrant!6 -
soooo Texas froze before Hell, thought it was never going to happen but it did 🥴
Had a meeting scheduled for today, but since my employees (crucial for the meeting) do not have power I had to reschedule.
VP: I saw that you cancelled the meeting
Me: yes I did sir, my people do not have power at their homes so I decided that we can postpone it for later.
VP: Understandable, I just wanted to see if you guys were ok.
Me: yes sir, we are thank you and yourself?
The rest of the conv was standard pleasantries.
Why can't it be like this for all devs around the world?34 -
Thank you Devrant, at lunch there are no more conversations because all the developers are on Devrant.
-
The rants I read here make me want to be a better developer. I started writing tests, linting code and ensuring 'quality code' because of the devrant community. Being a self taught developer, you never really have anyone to thank. But today I would like to appriciate you all for the rants, comments and advice that make us developers become better at our craft.2
-
Thank you to all the mentors out there! My mentor has the patience of a saint and really helps me understanding everything much better.
You guys help more than you realize!1 -
After several months on the job hunt with some discouraging rejections, I finally got an offer! Thank you all for inspiring me to keep learning and to stay humble. I've been stuck in a role where I feel overworked and unappreciated, with no room to grow. Excited for this next challenge and new beginnings! 😊4

Now that I passed 5k, I think it's time to thank this awesome community.
Literally all of you people are absolutely awesome. I have nobody to talk to about programming stuff in RL, but you really got me back on track. I lost motivation, but this network is...different. It's inspiring.
I learned a multitude of languages and strengthend my skills. So many people are awesome here, I cannot listen them all.
I just want to say...Thank you.6 -
Me: well guys, after the 4th attempt and a week of waiting, I’ve gotten a response from the remote backend team about the errors affecting this release. Which are the same issues affecting the last release 2 months ago. The findings are: “there is in fact some issue with the API”.
I’d like to thank everyone who put in so much effort to get us to this momentous step forward. We can expect a fix any year now.
*equally sarcastic colleague on another team listening in*:
oh wow, this months long thing has just been “some issue” all this time? Well that’s fantastic. You should mark the ticket as “done” and reply “thank you” for all their hard work.
..... I laughed so hard at how ridiculous all this is and the joke, that I nearly did, hoping someone from product/business would have to review it1 -

After only using linux (Linux Mint) for a week I have to say I absolutely fucking love it. 😍 One big thank you to everyone who has contributed to it, I don't think I will ever change to another operating system again (I will change distros of course).

I am in love with vim as well. :)
Also one big thank you to the devRant community and all the nice people I have met here :)16 -

Thank you very much.

For each day on devrant I feel this place more like a community than a social media. And damn thats good. Thank you all for making my day7
-
I just experienced the opposite of rant.
I spent 1 entire day ranting about a algorithm I couldn't write with no issues, it occupied all my mind and got me pissed of.
And today, I rewrote it entirely, and it works perfectly everywhere.
I was like : "No it can't work here. Oh ok", "And here's the bug ! No ? Nice.", "Don't tell me it'll work here. I'm a God".
That's why I love being a dev :D
Thank you, you freaking problem I had !7 -
So I deside instate of only going to stackoverflow to ask questions. Am ganna try to answer one !
It has been 2 days and I basically stopped all of work trying to help this guy . Finally I did and no thank you what so ever !!3 -

You are all beautiful people. Thank you for your unique mix of talents to make for a variety filled platform. I have come to appreciate different parts of the industry due to exposure on this site. It is great to joke around and just "be" here. No pressure, just banter and the occasional fighting. I think this is a good thing. I hope this place grows.

Devs are my closest friends and I have learned so much from you all.
They ask some of the best questions, their skill set is ever evolving, they have the real problem solving mindset, they are critical towards any and everything in a good way, and so much more.
There was this thread asking what a bad Product Manager is and this answer takes the cake.
The point highlighted in red is the ultimate truth.
Devs are most innovative people of our times. Big shout-out to you all and thank you for making me who I am today :)16 -
I managed to re-negotiate my offer to reach the (accidentally) advertised range exceeding my original (realistic) expectations and this is in huge part thanks to the helpful bunch of you here.
So: Thank you!!
And I can't belive that in a single fucking day I benefitted more from posting to devrant than all the time spent on toxic subreddits, calling useless recruiters, forums and others. Here, even those comments that I disagreed with were phrased in a reasonable manner and they also helped me formulate an apparently very strong argument in the compensation meeting.7 -
Well dear former employer thank you for everything. Thanks for taking me on as a junior and not providing any training at all. Thanks for changing my job role without consulting me whilst I was on holiday and again failing to train me for a job I had no idea about, but you apparently needed me to do for you. And finally thank you for letting me work nearly a full shift before telling me how much you like me, don't have a bad word to say about me, and you're really happy with all my work but the company and I "aren't a very good fit for each other anymore".4

When I have low motivation, I just remember that through my teaching, my 79 year old grandfather learned how to stream videos on his own, asked me to teach him how to pirate movies using torrents and bought himself a smartphone and now sends me emojis.
If he can do all that, I can tackle my Dapp. Thank you Dedushka.2 -
My friend who is new to Android App Dev was trying to make a simple app that programmatically takes a pic then sends it as an MMS. He opened Stack Overflow, copied code and i heard him murmur "hmm this is simple". Knowing the future, and the wrath of Android Studio, i leaned into my seat and waited. 2 hours later i knew Andy Studio had pissed all over him and it was written all over his face. I walked past him as if to go to the toilet then back again, his screen was blood red with errors and my heart danced and sang.
3 hours later i was out of the room and he sent me a text saying "I give up". I replied, "well tbh, im suprised it took you that long"
Thank you Android Studio for showing all those who think all we do is copy and paste code that they are freakin retards.4 -
Thank you, indian YouTube tutorials, your accent is hard to understand, but you made me get through almost all my semesters. ❤️6
-
I fucking hate the web guy.
He says - make a pop-up of the raw text you're receiving (in the app) so that I can test it easily while I fix it.
I did it.
Now he laughs and says - I think you searched for it and simply copied from wrong example. All you had to do was handle the text and parse it and display it blablabla instead of simply popping up the raw text.
Thank you I flipping KNOW all of that, you stuck up obnoxious frog. I did it that way initially and uploaded it coz you SAID so! Why do you ALWAYS have to talk like I know nothing!?5 -

Hey guys I posted back in October that I was starting a hobby that I've always wanted to do making programming related videos and tutorials with a lofty goal of hitting 20 subs by end of the year and you all blew that goal in 24hrs! That sudden support really excited me to do more and I want to say thank you!
Now that it is released l really wanted to make a tutorial over the new Google Assistant API and it is now officially released this month. I'm hoping to make a multi-part series over developing for the assistant and Google home plat form. I'd really appreciate your support and feedback on how I can improve my channel and possible video topics you would might like to see.

Hey all! It's a me, Skayo, you might know me from the very early years of devRant, my highlight bot, my random quote bot, the devRant-Community on GitHub or any of the dumb rants and things that I've posted during my time.
Since I'm currently doing a cleanup of my old GitHub repos and this platform is still somewhat active, I have decided to pass on or publish all my projects and things I've created for this community back in the days.
Firstly, I have just published and transferred the source codes for the @highlight bot, the @RandomQuote bot, the @here bot, and some weird bot framework to the devRant-Community GitHub organization (https://github.com/devRant-Communit...).
Feel free to check them out if you've ever wondered what awful, awful code was running in the background all these years!
Secondly, I am offering any of the following to anyone who's interested:
- Ownership of the "devRant-Community" organization on GitHub (https://github.com/devRant-Communit...)
- Credentials for the @RandomQuote devRant user
- Credentials for the @highlight devRant user
- Credentials for the @here devRant user
- Credentials for the @devNews devRant user
- Ownership of the "devNews" Discord server
- Ownership of the "Community Programming Book" Discord server
- Anything else that I've forgotten about, maybe check the comments
If you're interested, message me on Discord "@skayodev" or anywhere else I am active under that alias (f.e. Telegram).
I might do a little background check to prevent abuse and I AM NOT SELLING THEM, just giving them away.
Thank you devRant for all the fun we had together and for introducing me to some of my current best friends :)
A thank you especially to @dfox and @trogus, who have created this amazing platform! (and sorry for all of the bullshit I did back then lol)
I wish you all the best <3

I signed the contract for my first software developer job! I just want to thank everybody here that’s pushed me to do better, challenged my assumptions, and contributed to my growth as a dev and person. You all are great.7

After two years... I finally was able to quit my job.
I'm finally in a cool job, with a great team, with a cool project (from scratch! )
I have to learn Spring and Vue.js, knowing that I never tried any framework of these languages. But I really want to make it, I didn't suffer for two years, just to be beaten by a stack :p
Thanks for the ones who commented on my rant a few months ago, telling me to keep hoping for a better job. I got hired three days after the end of my previous contract, and I couldn't feel better now!9 -
100% honesty
I feel as if my friends from school are dropping me one by one and it's boiling down to my IT friends. I really like my friends and stuff but they're treating me like I'm invisible so I'm not posting this on instagram, not on twitter, and I'm not texting this to anyone, because I'm really starting to realize how big of an impact the life of IT studies has on me, and how amazing the community is. Thank each and every one of you for simply being here on devRant and I appreciate all of you.12 -

I would like to thank my mom and dad, all of the ranters who have contributed to this achievement and you, @dfox and @trogus—without you this would not be possible.4 -
Great error message. Now I know EXACTLY what to do in order to fix it. Thank you all over the place, Microsoft.3
-
That moment when your project is trending on HackerNews.
Your positive response was a big push, which finally made me post it on hn. Thank you so much, love you all!😃3 -
Isn't it disturbing that all major operating systems disrespect the computer's ability to do things? Everyone is becoming a walled garden, and people are increasingly developing and limited languages that consume more resources than they deliver value. Today VisualStudio on a corei7 is less performant than a Delphi 5 running on a Pentium 166mhz.
Much of its processing, energy and carbon emissions are used to display ads that "interest you".
Well, thank you *BSDs, Linux (except Ubuntu) and Illumos, for continuing to respect my computer's capabilities.6 -
Fuck this shit, fuck it, take it down, smash it with a rock and fuck it. Fucking 18th century system where we are graded for a 2 hour work after 6 months of learning. Fuck the idiots who think reading from a piece of paper will teach us something. Fuck the sheep who follow without looking aside. Fuck the asshole who initiated it all, and fuck this shit. Thank you.9
-
All the noob jokes about "tee hee I write such bad code exdee" fucking drive me nuts.
There are absolutely such things as good codebases, in any language. By posting "tee hee funny relatable" "memes" about your shitass code you just make yourself look like a fucking idiot who excuses poor quality with "haha so relatable!" bullshit excuses.
Thank you for being the literal cancer of the industry, oversaturating the markets and making all of our managers think we're fucking idiot babies that have to be wrangled like cats in order to get a single feature out the door, devoid of rational thought or a modicum of expertise.
Fuck you. You're the problem. Be better or find another profession where slacking off is acceptable.18 -
Another shitty shitty day.
That's all I wanted to post. Don't ask or comment or bother.
Keep scrolling.. thank you!11 -
With this post I want to say thank you to all my fans (friends) just kidding I don't have any fans ... or friends
Well ... What I actually wanted to say is that I want to thank @EvilArcher and @naktop3031 for ++ing my things all day because they decided to push me to the 10k mark
HOLY MOLY THANK YOU AGAIN!
If this isn't a record I don't know what is
I'd also like to thank @dfox and @trogus for developing this awesome app
And every single person that ever ++ed something by me, THANK YOU
It's been an awesome journey for me since I joined devRant in October, I got to know lots of funny and great people here :D11 -
Great. Just FUCKING great. When I was looking at devrant, suddenly some add-ons crashed (correction: ALL add-ons crashed!). All other tabs flooded with ads. I go to the add-ons manager, and what is their SHITTY excuse?
"Starting in Firefox version 57, only extensions built using WebExtensions APIs will work. Not sure if your add-ons are affected? See Firefox add-on technology is modernizing and these Frequently Asked Questions for details."
Anyone of you fuckwits ever heard of LEGACY SUPPORT? Leaving some time so the other devs can adapt to your new brainfart technology?! Even fucking C++ has that. FUCK!
Thank god devrant doesn't have ads.10 -
Go to fucking hell SO!
Question: "How to do X?"
Answer: "You can solve your particular problem without doing X."
God fucking damnit, yeah some noob tried to use X to solve a completely unrelated problem and thank god somebody pointed out a better solution. But since all other questions about doing X are labelled as duplicates of this question, could you dickheads at least provide an actual answer to the question instead of an answer which only works for that particular problem and has nothing to do with X?3 -

Quarantine, WFH and sleep combo is really not working out for me.
I'm unable to sleep. Therefore I'm wide awake at 4AM, but will sleep for 12 hours when I eventually manage to fall sleep. But then, I have meetings tomorrow and won't be able to sleep all day.
Overall, fuck covid.
Thank you for listening.8 -
I usually convince myself like "no corporate/government has enough computational resources to classify useful information from enormous pile of worthless junk they could blindly collect from tracking every single step of all their users."
But every time I see this, it's like I hear them saying "Why we should bother? You just handpick the important ones. Thank you."9 -
1) That loud ass mother fucker sitting besides me, shut the fuck up.
2) Air motherfucking condition turned all the way to the max makes me horny and want to fuck your motherboard.
3) Illiterate assholes writing code without any comments and half assed function name just to look cool when we approach them for doubts.
4) Onsite motherfuckers enjoying their lives, taking photos of it and posting it in a monthly magazine while we s(h)it behind the fucking systems all day.
Thank-fucking-you, y'all can die suffocating in your own smelly dierraea poop.6 -
1 year and a half ago, I quit the job where I spent almost 6 years; My first job after that was as a freelancer for certain company here in colombia, but after sometime I learned that freelancing for local companies is not well payed at all, so I decided to try to work with toptal(a pre-vetted freelancer platform)
So the process included a first interview with a HR person, it was a british lady that mopped the floor with me(she wasn't rude at all but I felt horrible) 'cuz I couldn't speak english good enough, and then I was rejected... Some time down the line I created a rant for anyone that were willing to speak sometime to practice english conversations. @jesustricks and @orhun answered and in fact I got to speak with them.
@amyshackles spoke with me too, I reached her out over linkedin 😊
Just wanted to say thank you, finally I got a job offer with a nearshore company, you helped me a lot there, speaking with you people gave confidence and more knowledge. Again thank you, love you guys.
PS: you don't have to love me back7 -
Was wondering when the stickers would come in when low and behold, my wife and I were packing up for a move and the stickers were just there in my sock/underwear drawer...
Confused as all hell I ask my wife, "Did you put these here?"
Turns out the letter arrived ages ago and she wanted to surprise me by opening it up and hide the stickers!
I mostly wear sandals so I had no need for socks and never moved them around to find the stickers underneath...
So here they are and thank you @dfox and @trogus for making this awesome community!!!devrant big thank you! _stickers arrived @trogus wife is a cruel prankster apparently forever ago @dfox6 -
Thank you all for helping me to my first real goal, 1k! Thank you all! Love this community so much! Let’s continue that.5

*ahem*
You know how people say "you get the gist!", yeah?
...
I don't. 🤔
How can they expect me to GET http-colon-slash-slash-gist-dot-github-dot-com without the rest of the url?
I bet it's stored in that social context I've never been able to access.
THANK YOU, I'LL BE HERE ALL WEEK 😘joke/meme instant regret help can your score become negative social interactions and spontaneous erections -
Hey guys a couple of months ago I posted asking for help on how to land a remote job. A few weeks ago I got an interview and today I started my first remote job. Thank God and to all of you who suggested help.

Sometimes you need someone to be your /dev/null with whom you can talk about all that fucked up shit going on in your mind.
Thank you /dev/null -
!rant
@dfox
Any chance the notifs can jump to the relevant item? When someone has commented on a rant I commented on, I want to start looking from that particular comment, not have to go through them all and wonder where the fuck i read last in that thread.
Thank you.2 -
Dear Microsoft,
you're fucking awesome , can't believe I'm saying this but I couldn't work without Visual Studio anymore.
The last year I had projects on all platforms out there and I've used dotnet for all of them.
Mr Nadella is the best thing that happened to you ever.
Visual Studio is free and like the rest of the tools it's only a matter of Time till you open source Vs.
Thank you !
Proud to be a corporate fanboy.8 -
Tfw you accidentally chmod'ed the entire root of your cloud server, because you've misplaced a "/".. Thank god, that there is such a thing called a 'backup'.
The amount of sweat and stress I had when the SSH disconnected and I couldn't log back in, the Apache and MySQL services that began to throw failures..
It's on moments like this, that you really appreciate the 24/7 customer-support! 😂
And all this while I was at my job, working for another company.. -
Today I discovered the yes command in Linux. All I can say is yes. Thank you whoever did this. Friggin 1.5 billion y's in 10 seconds. That is exactly what I need.4

Dear Valentine,
I am writing this to express my love towards you. I know not many express their love towards their own. But I won't forget you and our relationship. Here goes my love for you.
I would first like to thank you for bearing with me & supporting me all along. You have been there with me through all my good and bad times. In fact my day starts with you and ends with you. I was with you in all my moods. There were a few times when I didn't believe in you, but you did what I wanted. There were times when you let me down, but you made it up to you later. I am sorry for heavy workloads these days. I love your performance. I know you love doing it. I know you more than anyone. I guess you also know me better w.r.t my history. Thanks for helping me getting my work done, helping me with job applications, helping me find new people, helping me have fun, helping me organised and for everything.
You do know there might be time where I may have to replace you. I assure you to do my best to upgrade you instead of replacing so that I can hang on to you much longer.
I love you 😍 < >-ThinkpadE570
Wrote in ❤ with my personal machine. -
I salute all server admins here. I might never understand how you guys get through with all those terminals and debugging and greb and runlevel and all these weird things.
I spent two weeks trying to set up a dev server on CentOS installed on a VM. Just configuring the server took hours of trying to figure out what goes where and in the end I realized that the only thing I did wrong was the runlevel! Which I found out today is actually a thing!!!!
I thank you all for existing. Without you, us web developers would go crazy!2 -
When a client sends you an email with multiple question marks "????" Just because you havent answered an email solely stating "ok thanks" in the past 24 hours.
What am I even supposed to do with that dude?
PS we need to fix some stuff on his wordpress website thingy to which we agreed literally a day ago. First of all do you really expect we magically fixed everything today even or ehm at least try to be friendly instead of just sending a bunch of question marks thank you very much3 -
late night programming + 🥃 == DevRant

So @-ScratchOs just gave me my 1000 +1.
I want to thank you all for being so awesome. I have never felt more welcome than here. Thank you @dfox and @trogus for making this.
No one in my school shares my passion for coding and so it is very nice to meet people with the same hobby here.
Also, why are all the cats you can select for your avatar so chubby?4 -
For the amount of things I learn from devrant & it’s community, I have to give you credit. This community has really helped me in the path of success and progression, so I want to thank you all sincerely for this :)14
-
Someone from my current workplace found out who I am here. There goes my relative anonymous life here.
To all my colleagues, especially in the 'ansible' group chat.
I love you all (most of the time).
Please don't send this to upper management. Thank you.13 -
arrived all the way to Philippines, the stickers have. yes mhmmm. salamat po @dfox @trogus (thank you).
//po is used to show respect to older people or someone respectable here in ph4 -
tldr; devRant is great
My favorite part of devRant is I ask an opinion on a technology and so many people give me alternatives or ideas to look into and learn about instead. This is why I enjoy this community I'm always learning about new things i probably wouldn't have heard about otherwise. Or at least wouldn't have run into for a long while. Thank you all1 -
When I came home just now after a long day and opened my mailbox, I was instantly made a little bit happier than before.
Thank you @dfox and @trogus for creating this opportunity for devs to rant about little and big incidents and to seek advice and amusement. (And for the stickers, of course. :D)
Thank you all for being the awesome community you are.
(Two of the stickers were immediately stuck to one of my boxes and fit in quite well.
Edit: Also: sorry for potato, it's evening in Germany.)13 -
Now I can finally say that Linux is the best os I've ever used.
It's is just awesome. Everything can be controlled here easily. No fuss in installing and stuff. I wish I had started using this OS right from the beginning. Thank you to all the members of Linux community.
Linux community raise your hands up.7 -
Yeah ! 100++'s
It's not a big milestone but ... Well it's something xD
Thank you all for this amazing community !7 -
Becoming an 'almost' decent developer these past few years has made me realize how absolutely undeserved my ego was back in high school when I first joined DevRant and StackOverflow and thought i was 'all that' just because i did some programming thing stupid teenagers found cool in a random school.
At 24 I can say I'm happy for the internet knocking me down a few pegs when my 16-17 year old ego got out of hand. I feel it's really made me better in the long run.
Thank you DevRant2 -
Did a lot of IT coordination and managing web sites as a Webmaster the last 3 years.
Now every other company wants me to know every damn framework and multiple years of experience in each... Well I know fuckin' HTML 5 and CSS3 and some JavaScript and can create most web sites easily.
Feeling like 13 yo kids with some Angular 2 skills take all my jobs. Thank you, NOT! -
When the previous dev has written all datetime query lookups by date only, resulting in any values for the ladt day of the month to not be included.
THANK YOU.
Same wanker has copied and pasted same 100 lines of code over and over and literally changed one value in between. Obviously never heard of a function.3 -
To all the devRant community:
After a lot of work during the last month, I finally got to release my first game on the App Store!!!.

Hi there ! These awesome stickers have just arrived in France, I'm the happiest girl right now ! Thank you all for the 20 +1's on my rant 8)
Now going for the stress ball, I really need it 😂1 -
Freecad isn't open source software!
If it is impossible to get something compiled, it can't be open source.
When you can't compile it, all, that is left, is to use a binary.
If there is only a binary, it isn't open source.
Seriously: If you are participating in an open source project, please make sure, that compiling from source is a viable option for the generic gentoo user. Thank you.10 -
It’s time for me to thank people who, through their work, defined me as a person.
Thank you Terry A. Davis. You completely obliterated my whole narrative of “being incapable because of mental state”. Your example is the reason I’m privileged enough to type this right now, you’re the reason I survived depression. You showed me how to overcome FOMO once and for all by just doing what I’m supposed to as good as I can. Fame will come. And indeed, it came.
You’re not the smartest programmer who ever lived. Only humans can be programmers. You’re a superhuman. You’re not the smartest programmer. You’re just the smartest.
May you rest in peace.
——
Thank you Richard Matthew Stallman. You showed me that the good which also can fight is a thing. You taught me to be afraid of nothing. You taught me how to be an immovable object, no matter the unstoppable force opposing. Because of you I can freely interact with people and my illness has no influence on who I am.
——
Thank you Håkon Wium Lie. You showed me that the ways of overcoming and suffering aren’t the only ones. You’re charming yet uncompromising, empowering yet never reckless. Since we met, in any troubling social interaction my brain automatically thinks “What would Håkon do?”, and somehow it’s always able to find a solution that doesn’t involve the cruelty that always dictated what I said and what I did.
You can already stop doing good things because you’re surely going to heaven with other golden retrievers but I know you’ll never stop. -
Applicant: I have 7 years of experience in software development industry and here is my repo/portfolio for you to look at.
Manager: I don't need it. Take the 5 hours coding exam.
*Applicant scores low
Manager: You didn't score high. Thank for applying at Stack****. Goodbye
Applicant: Wait, sorry but do you judge all applicants only through an exam?
Manager: Yes. Exam tells how expert the applicant is.10 -
What a fucking shit show. You buy an original DVD but cannot watch it because of a stupid copy protection system.
"Injects purposely damaged sectors into the DVD in places not read by most DVD players."
Well tough luck, VLC reads all sectors and chokes on the corrupted ones.
Here I am, sitting with a legally bought laptop, a legally bought DVD and a legally owned playback software, yet unable to enjoy my property.
THANK YOU HOLLYWOOD! >:(15 -
One does not really appreciate pre-built binaries until he has to build a massive code-base [and it takes hours on top-notch hardware, plus a lot of error tweaking].
Thank you to all the open-source supporters that take their time to pre-compile binaries and/or automate builds.
As contributors, they deserve our appreciation as much as developers do.14 -
Some little things can really boost your mood. Thank you @dfox and @trogus and thanks you all guys for being a great company :)1

Just got my stickers today. Thank you @dfox and the team. All the way from NY to Malaysia! Next stop, become a supporter!

Well, so I finally got 200 ++s, and now I can finally...
Wear vests! Uh... so that's cool... XD
Anyway, I just wanted to thank everybody for being such a good sport, around here... I've not been here for a long time, but I already feel like a part of a big family, of developers (and, why not, also non-developers...), and that makes me so happy.
In the end, devRant is like one of those rubber ducks developers use to tell things, I guess, lol.
It's just that. devRant is a rubber duck.
And every one of us is making that rubber duck bigger, and bigger, into something so unique and cool...
Something you can talk to (or rant to, I guess haha), something you can express all of your feelings to...
And inside of that rubber duckie there are... all of us. Hearing these rants from developers all around the world.
In the end it's really the community the most important part of... every thing or project, really, whatever it is, online or offline.
Keep on ranting about whatever you want, if you feel the need to...
I hope to hear more about all of you.
Thank you, all of you. I mean it.
Especially you two, who made it possible, @dfox and @trogus.
...devRant is such a cool project.
I sincerely hope it lives forever, it deserves it. You deserve it.
Again, thank you!
I love you all, good devRanting! 💙8 -
To all of you:
Nobody enjoys loading screens. Just because the UI reacts on things, doesn't mean that the actual job gets fucking done.
So instead of using some shitty progressbar you copied from a dev who copied it from a 90's textbook, show some cat images.
The fucking internet is full of it and if your shitty Hello World app that is wasting 300MB of my RAM is dieing in the middle of some loading process, you could at least ease my pain.
Please. Show cat images instead of a progressbar. Thank you ❤️8 -
Stickers arrived a couple of weeks ago ...but didn't managed to post a pic till now and to say thank you devRant. I love you all...keep the spirit.5
-
Thank you to everyone who voted! STRIFE came first place in this weeks round! See you all in the finals :)1

The one they say they fire you and say that everything will be all right and you’re nice but you have to live.
If you ever be in such situation remember at the end to thank them a lot that they decided to fire you but also ask why it took them so long to figure this out. ( especially if you work more than couple of years ).
Their faces after your question - priceless.
Thank again and immediate leave afterwards so they can ask themselves this question till the end of their lives and you will actually feel better and remember their stupid faces that will make you laugh when you’re old.
And yeah everything gonna be probably all right but you need to find better job not same stupid deep shits.1 -
"This question is unlikely to help any future visitors"
For all the people that answer anyway or answer before this happens, thank you.
To the assholes who do this at SO: I can't tell you how many specific problems I've had where a question that did help me had this.
You all suck. Go fuck yourself off a cliff. The entire site is built on the backs of people who get shat on by a small elitist community that likely couldn't code themselves out of a box.
Again, to those who still answer... thank you. To those who still ask questions in spite of the abuse... thank you.2 -
I swear I didn’t hit delete and then confirm delete... Then why do we have 3 different software analytics that show all the mouse clicks leading up to and including the mouse click of you deleting the customer... thank goodness I set up soft deletes instead of hard deletes like the legacy system use to be.
-
Boss: "You hardcoded the redirect uri in the code (Early on during development and forgot about it, because apple OAuth is a piece of shit), but don't worry I fixed it by hardcoding the uri with the production host into the config file where clearly all settings are fetched from the OS Environment variables at runtime. This will surely fix the problem in staging we have, no need to thank me"5
-
One will seldom hear me completely shit about a piece of technology.
But my time has come to do it again:
Fuck RedHat man. Like, really, fuck you. Fedora is fine. Centos is fine. Fuck red hat.
That is all. Thank you.5 -
OMG @dfox! Thank you for adding the modify! I can finally fix that pesky autocorrect from 3 months ago
Haha jk, 5 minute rule. Can't Heil Hitler all my posts... -
That very "awesomeee" moment when you have to create a website to a new startup which are using all the right buzzwords such as blockchain, AI and machine learning... (wuhuuu)
Btw. will you help a fellow dude by answering my survey for my final paper?
https://goo.gl/forms/...
Thank you!
- and it took a whole year for me (and some desperation for help) to write my first ever post on here :p4 -
so now they even have a name for not being an idiot...
its called a "composible" architecture as apposed to a "monolith"
what if i told you it's all the same?
(i'll even throw in a bonus and say that a "microservice" architecture is still a monolith - because you need all your damn microservices working together for the full product or service anyway!!! and thats a monolith!!!!)
wow, you've "decoupled" your frontend from your backend? with this fancy thing called an "API"? well, what the hell else was anyone doing in the past decade? ITS THE SAME THING YOU DUMBASS
god i swear its 🤡 all the way down, just inventing new words for the same thing over and over again. idiots. idiots everywhere
i'm just so happy we have "composible" architectures now ❤️ thank god for that6 -
Wish you all a Happy New Year! Being a part of this community has made me feel a sense of belonging and that I'm a part of something bigger! Seeing all your fuck ups made me feel better that in not the only one, seeing all your accomplishments motivated me to achieve more in life! I would like to take this moment to thank you all and to make me feel proud of being a dev! I wish you all an amazing new year and may you all get whatever you wish this new year!

Woah! Got nice response for "mystartup"! I heard people got many conversions from their posts. Thank all of those who posted 😊 If you haven't already then go ahead and post about your product and tag it with "mystartup" 🙌🏼

Hi ranters :) it has been a while since i posted. I always install devrant when am changing phones and read rants when i am on road (like today). It has been a huge insight in a lot of things and was a great time spent reading rants so thank you for that :)
I wish you all a great day/night and a fantastic weekend.8 -
Coding is a form of art. Some of my coworkers don't understand this and it sucks.
Coding should be an obligatory assignment in all schools. Not because I love it, but because they will.
Coding is a lot like philosophy, it opens up your eyes in so many ways.
That's it folks. Thank you for reading.2 -
If I were to do-over, I would:
- Know that the world is MUCH bigger then even the largest city in the most populous country, and I get to pick where I'm going. So I'm going where the grass is green and bosses are not allowed to physically assault their employees, thank you very much.
- Do not care for missing or useless requirements, and only deliver the PoC. the requirements will all change the very second a client, BA or boss look at the PoC, anyway. Let them come.
- know that companies will replace you and do not need you, just as you do not need them. fuck their needs and live your own life. If they ask for overnight unpaid overtime, leave immediately and laugh all the way home. -
...just download our new app! NO! FUCK YOU! What do you think you deserve storage space and permissions on my phone? Make a responsive site or webapp or I will not use your service. Why does everything need a fucking app? Oh, you bought a new car? Download an app! New appliance? DOWNLOAD A FUCKING APP! Just bought a new Samsung phone, but already use all of Googles empireware? WELL HERE IS ANOTHER CALENDAR/MAIL/EVERYTHING APP FROM SAMSUNG THAT YOU CAN'T COMPLETELY DELETE! This needs to stop.

I too got my $1 unix sticker pack (thank you very much whoever posted this by the way) and thought posting a picture of them would be redundant
First thing when I brought them to work to show them or to my colleagues I stepped out of my car and they all fell to the soaking wet ground (it was pouring down at the time)
Luckily they're of very high quality and still intact 😊11 -
hey do you know if there is a JavaScript libary for naming newly created files acording to user convention? Instead of "Unamed file".
Like [DATE]_[0000]_[NAME]_[SIZE].[Filetype] --> 20210708_0001_Pictureofme_1000x1000.jpg
There is a brand new service of the swiss post office that scans all your mail. But in the app it says only "unnamed document" for each new letter.
I'd like to suggest them, that you can set up a naming convention for each new pdf to my liking.
thank you 🙂3 -
I made that request a month ago or so, not long after i started to use devrant more often than any other app, and i can say only that i am glad that i pressed "install" that time when i found it in the GoogleStore.
Thank you all for making this community more like a family than a refuge!
Truth is i feel a little bad now for doing that but i might be able to repay the founders and all mambers of this community somehow, someday. And i am looking forward to do it 😁
Cheers!4 -

Sooo not so long ago, i was saying something about my recent first interview. I passed it and it felt so good and that kind of made me proud. But now it is even better! I just got my first peanuts as a developer and i must say "boy, it felt good" !
Thank you all, members of the devRant community for always giving me not only courage to try, ideas to research and reasons to laugh, but the most importantly: some insights of how things are out there. For a introvert like me it is really great to not simply step into the darkness, blindfolded 😁
Cheers to you all! 😘 -
I administer Atlassian stack instance (among zillion other things, of course). Once I've got an issue about login problem:
"I can login to Confluence, but not to Jira, could you help me?"
Looking into projects configuration, into user's permission groups in Crowd (both apps are connected, it will be important in a moment)... Everything looks good. Wtf?
Suddenly, I've got this idea:
"What username do you use in Jira?"
"My username."
"What about Confluence login?"
"My email."
Realization in 3... 2... 1...
Wait for it...
Just a little more tension...
"Nevermind, thank you!"
Remember, guys, always give them a chance. Plan for the worst, but hope for the best. And I wish you all only such issues! :-D -
God damn I hate that "smart" and "convenient" autoscrolling to focus areas which has kind of exploded on webpages, most of the time just fucking the user over while one is trying to read something or generally use the site.
Pages bouncing all over with shitty response, who the fuck thought that were a great idea, they should've been put in the ground as a Thank you.1 -
OH MAH GAWD, FUCK ECLIPSE.
Just thank you so much Eclipse, for executing the entire build pipeline instead of running the last configuration.
Thank you so so much for considerately forcing me to clean upon every change to the codebase, also obliterating reliable hot code replace.
Special thanks for letting me clean once more, after the pipeline finished.
And thank you for the search bug, where all CTRL+H searches result in an error message, even though the search is being conducted.
Just go fucking die, you tremendous piece of garbage.5 -

I was getting headaches from looking at the comp screen all day, but what can you do when it's your job? A friend told me about these glasses you can buy specifically for people at a comp 8+ hrs a day. I gave in and bought a pair, and now, no more headaches! Thank you Gunnar glasses! 👓 😃1 -
! WebDevs
I'm just undecided with which ide for web development I should go..
I'm switching all the time.
I'm working with NetBeans, codepen and brackets.
What do you use and why? (please only free versions)
Thank you
Above are just example pics.24 -
Asciidoc! I finally got around to play around with it and it is just so awesome! Best tool for documentation hands down! So many improvements over Markdown:
- importing real code snippets based on tags with syntax highlighting and annotations (which can be also auto numbered with "<.>" instead of "<1>"!)
- Admotions! Love them!
- automatic TOC! Finally!!
- joining a child item to a parent item in a list with "+" in a new line (this one took me a while to understand, but no more offset items in lists! Love it!)
- making tables and loading data from an actual CSV-file! The future is now!!
- embedding images with a fixed size
Just a few things from the top of my head. I don't know why I put up with vanilla Markdown all these years...
Last but not least, a big THANK YOU to everyone who recommended Asciidoc! I accidentally stumbled across multiple mentions of Asciidoc a few months ago. Sorry, but you know who you are! Much love to you and your loved ones! You changed my life for the better. Thank you! -
Shit, I missed that I got a thousand ++!
But thank you all so much, I love this community. This is just so amazing.4 -
So ... All my favorite shops are either closed or closing down soon...
Thank you online shops I guess5 -
I can't believe I have been so blind all this time! For years I have unquestionably accepted the lies of corporations and governments around the world, but I have been enlightened and it is glorious!
So thank you, JavaScript, you magnificent beast - for informing me of the misinformation that has resided in the public consciousness for thousands of years!
It is not the year 2016, it is in fact only the year 116 - wake up sheeple!2 -
Ok. I am trying out a new thing. My colleague told me about a technique worth giving a shot. So basically you should ignore the negative things and only focus on the positive ones making your mind shift states and boost your productivity although sometimes really hard. It’s working for me quite well so far, so here’s my two cents on today:
Thank you my dear designer fellow to making all the screens more beautiful than they were already. Big respect for you for not worrying about deadlines and for for inspiring me to be a faster programmer. I knew I can count on you. Being such nice to me leaves me speechless sometimes, but not today. Today I wish you soon get all the anusroses to smell right next to your beautiful face1 -
OMG... I want to thank my mother for changing my diapers for many years, my brother for all the games he no longer plays, my wife for actually making money, my plant for the awesome smell, God for maybe doing something (I guess), thanks @dfox, @trogus, and each one of you guys that deemed my rants worthy of your ++.1

Fuck environments without direct internet access and only http proxy in place.
That is all, thank you for listening3 -
The "Gratitude" emoji pack recently introduced to Slack. They're basically "Thank you" in different languages.
Among others, there is a Russian "спасибо", but there is no Ukrainian "дякую".
What's up Slack? Didn't you paint your logo blue and yellow when the war started?
If you're gonna push your "please don't cancel us" marketing BS like all the other companies, at least be fucking consistent.8 -
I can't recall one single person I can call a mentor, however...
When I first started as a developer I had a senior to work with... I knew close to anything but I was always good at research and learning on my own... But we used an asp.net framework, it was new and there was little to no useful information, only basics... When I asked the senior (let's call him Joe) for help he gave me a quick answer:
Joe: Go to file xx, there's an example of what you need there...
Me: Well, been there and that's great but it doesn't help...
Everytime I was stucked during my first week it was always some sort of the same, so I insisted this time...
Me: so, Joe... I'm really stuck on this one, can you give it a look?
Joe: I know, I've been researching a way to do it for an hour now and can't get it either...
Me: wow! Thanks... But I thought you were an expert on this...
Joe: not really, never used it before. It's as new to me as it is to you! :)
So, that switched me from "this fucking weasel won't help me for shit" to "well, let's help each other"
We became good friends, always challenging each other and from that day on I stopped asking for help, and asking where can I help others...
I had great and greatly bad colleague and seniors. Each one thought me something either what to do or what not to do, how to act or not, how to tackle problems, how to teach...
Everyone I have worked with, worked for or trained is a mentor of mine. Even those I feel like I failed training thought me how to do better next time...
Thank you guys for being grate... Thank you assholes for teaching me how to send a guy go fuck himself! Good luck for those who get stucked with me -
I would like to thank everyone for their interest in my last two rants (that two with my CVs).
From what I saw, that rants were in the most popular, for which I thank you all!
As I promised, I will soon release the templates of that CVs
Anyway, thank you all! -
Because of all the devRant posts about unit tests, I decided to write a few to see how they worked.
They just saved me from pushing completely broken code to production. THANK YOU devRant!!1 -

been lurking @ Rants for some time and want to thank you all for some great laughs.
Now I come to seek knowledge.
Studying computer science and all we learn are java at this point.
I want some frontend and was looking at React and realized I need to learn js first.
So, best way of learning js coming from java.
found javascript30.com worth it?11 -
Hello everyone, I've been looking for a long time to switch from Windows to Linux (on my tower, I have a macbook). The only problem being that I can't decide at all. I've heard a lot of good things about Linux Mint, Manjaro and Arch (especially here for him), I don't know which would be best for me (I'm in my last year of a master's degree in computer systems architecture) because most of the time when I use a Linux it's a simple Debian in CLI.
Also, I have no idea which GUI to choose between KDE Cinamon and other modern not too childish GUIs. Can you help me find arguments to choose the right one?
I also like sometimes playing video games like WoW or Diablo 3 but I guess it will work with Winepak with Flatpak.
Thank you in advance for your help and thank you devRant to exist :).
PS: Si il y a des francophones, Faites moi signe :)7 -
"White" Background is killing my eyes..
Please make "Black" as default website background color.

Client: Thank you for this and all your hard work we will review and get back to you EOP Friday before final submit.
Us: We have been working to a deadline and have actually finished early which meant that we would be able to submit on Friday, at the very least by the afternoon. One question...is this your time EOP Friday?
Client: Yes
Us: That'll be 2 in the morning here and a Saturday.2 -
I got the Aero15. Had to send it in because ctrl+alt+shift+s (IntelliJ Preference menu) and some others critical shortcuts weren't working. Got a reply a week later.
"Thank you for using our service. The explained fault isn't actually a fault. If you want to use that button combination simply remap the FN key. Mind you this will disable any FN key combinations."
....
"What about all the other combinations?"
....
"Ok we returned it to the technicians who will do their best to repair it."
....
I await their response. But seriously, for a company that makes GAMING keyboards this is pretty embarrassing. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. -
How to cheer up a colleague? Ask him/her to lick on a link.
Almost sent a thank-you email to ITSD confirming that my access now works, all I needed was to lick the link they sent me.2 -
1. I recorded something with my dad until 12 AM isarel daylight time

Thank you for deleting our very first sprint.
The development was horrible and the management was a bizarre.
Thank you JIRA, and that one gay who accidentally deleted all 120+ stories and task.
PS. Calling gay is not an offensive word. He likes being called gay2 -
!rant - it's a THANK YOU!
Had the problem so far that I could not start some apps in docker containers with GPU support (e. g. Chromium).
After a long search and a lot of help from the community, today's update of xf86-video-ati (1:7.8.0-2 -> 1:7.10.0-1) has finally fixed the bug. Yay!
Thank you very much Arch Linux and all the great maintainers. You're doing an awesome job.2 -
FUCK. So the bog boys get all in a panic about one of our best devs leaving.
They respond to this with 2 things, that I am aware of, 1 is to setup meeting with all the devs to see if they are happy, the other was this message sent to me from our CEO.
"Heya..We've decided to give you a one time thank you bonus.. will be paid at month end .. thank you for everything regards".
Today I find out what that "bonus" was, a nice 8% of my salary. Like HTF is that a "bonus".7 -
Please, dear god, is there a browser extension to answer all these shitty cookie/data storage/privacy popups with MY SPECIFIC ANSWER?
As a web dev I understand that websites need cookies, and as a tech company employee I understand that essential cookies as well as functional cookies are okay-ish (most of the time). I just don't want marketing cookies/tracking.
All those extensions just block the popup or block all cookies. This is not what I want!
And why the hell on earth didn't they come up with one single solution for all websites beforehand, so we dont have 6.388.164.341 different popups/bars/notifications/flyouts/drop-ins/overlays???
THIS. IS. JUST. ANNOYING.
Thank you for your attention.6 -
I'm really in love with Linux, I use it for work and programming. But at Home I still have a Windows Desktop PC. But All the Windows Updates in the past days (and even today) and the other Shit the Shit Windows has, I want to Switch to Linux even for my Home pc. I think for the first time I'll install it on a separate disk.
I want to try some new Linux Distribution. How about elementary os? I Like the design, its really attractive.
Thank you for Sharing your opinion with me :)4 -
Hey DevRant Fam ❤️ hope you are all doing very well!, for awhile now i have been focusing on c# and I certainly do enjoy it! Though since I’m still in uni.. we have only been building forms which as far as i am aware is not used anymore..
So my devRant fam, I’d love to be learning more of the modern things and also building more modern forms using c#, I’m very curious to hear what advice you have for me, I’m very much happy to learn anything & I’m open to all of your opinions!.
Again thank you for reading my lengthy rant, I appreciate it highly!
Hope you have an amazing day/night wherever you are!
Best
Milo ☺️❤️9 -
Never did it in my 3 years of coding. Worth noting, its hard to find clients in the middle east who would pay enough money for me to think they deserve an all nighter. They all think websites cost $200 to $500. Thank you wordpress for that :p9

!rant I'm lucky to work with 2 of the best back-enders in my career. We were royally pushed/screwed over today due to PM's last minute demands for a phone app that they were demoing to 1000's at a conference. Guess what, certain elements broke. But the guys jumped in to get the API fixed. It's a bit much being the only phone dev on the team but with such strong backend support, it makes it a pleasure to come into work. You know who you guys are. Thank you. Remember a little support makes all the difference in the workplace.4

Hi, I got a question to you all but preferably to the german devs. Which education and what kind of studies do you got? I am currently looking what I want to do after school but it's hard to get a overview what actually is necessary.
Thank you very much for your answers.
It's been a while since I've said it -
FUCK AI
FUCK ChatGPT o1 whatever the fuck model is it
FUCK Sam Altman
and most of all FUCK all of those extreme leftists. Don't ask me why. Just fuck them.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk28 -
Joke about Rust all you want, but Rust is the reason efficient programs are on vogue. When you see a web developer optimizing their JavaScript to make a smaller bundle, or a backend developer getting rid of dependencies, thank Rust for that.
I don't like Rust, I don't like their community, I don't like their superiority complex, but their existence is net positive so far.9 -
I have posted my resume on so many sites, consulted lots of( more like 2) resume experts and still all I get is "thank you for applying for this position..... we value your application and will retain it in our records if we ever have a suitable position for you". I think the universe is telling me to start a startup😅😅. I laugh because secretly the rejection stings😂😂6

Hello, Hi! Friendly neighbourhood noob here!
What’s he stuck on today you ask? React and Firebase!
Did he try? Yes he did! Only a little hitch this time.
Really? Little?
...It’s all relative... like the truth!
Anyway PLEASE someone look at my StackOverflow question!!
https://stackoverflow.com/questions...
Firebase and react are awesome tbh. But I cant figure this out!
Thank you!! -
Just want to take a moment to thank Sir Francis Regex (AKA Stephen Kleene) for creating regex. Thank you for making my life easier and better through your efforts. Rest in peace, my friend.
Regex is the shit y'all. We all stand atop the shoulders of giants. Spare a moment to reflect and appreciate. -

Hello all, I'm not too experienced with open sourcing code, so here is my first attempt with a small script that initiates a phone call using php.
If someone has the time, please let me know what you think, any important things I'm missing or any advice you might have.
Thank you devRanters!

I got an interesting quesrion. People asking me why i started programming and i realised quickly.. I started so never had to deal with people and fast forward a few years i got the opposite, only difference is. I found like minded and good people that love what they do and I am glad with that, maybe abrupt but in my mind, good decision.
So in the end, thank you all regardless of your upbringing, past and where you are in your career. You're the reason all of us actually find comfort in talking to people. Where it be rants good or bad
Enjoy the weekend -
Recently we got a new project assigned and as always you are hyped, really really hyped...........
We were supposed to find all kind of driver updates (especially bios ones) for all devices the company owns. So first of all we thought:
EAAAASY! A little bit of web crawling, regex, etc.

We were sooooo soooo wrong these fucking manufacturer websites are absolutely awful to crawl or parse and nowadays there are no proper FTP Servers or something else anymore you could use to get the information. Every subsite is little bit different...
While coding and literally brute forcing possible urls (there was some kind of vague pattern) we learned AGAIN to appreciate proper developed and designed websites. Especially by devs who may have some more usage scenarios in mind for their site than simple human clients.
So thank you to all of you awesome web developers who design proper websites and web tools!
All in all it took us 2 weeks to come up with a proper solution (by the way we are a smal team of 3 devs) which somewhat works reliable and can deal with site changes etc. -
Thank you all advanced developers to make such great extensions !
2 extension modules needed, found in 2 days, with all the bonuses.
It's saving me weeks of work. And the show goes on. -
Just checked on AltRant in the App Store Connect dashboard, and got a nasty surprise: a pile (22 in total) of crashes, all of them because of things I never thought would cause a crash...
Thank you for all the feedback, today I am going on an army exam. After that - bugfixes are supposed to arrive soon.4 -
Thank you Matlab, for my daily dose of frustration.
Thank you Matlab, for deciding to surface-plot a 2D variable with the x axis = columns and y axis = rows, because of course that's the most intuitive way to go about it.
Because of course that's consistent with the standard way to refer to a variable's elements.
After all, everybody knows that Z(i, j) refers to the i-th column and j-th row of a matrix, right?
Thank you, Matlab, for depriving me of the little fuck I gave about getting something done today.
Now go die in a fire.6 -
To all my Machine Learning engineers, Ive been doing Frontend development for 6 years and I'm done. Wanting to get into machine learning because I've always loved data.
1. What is your day to day like?
2. Any advice for my learning journey?
Thank you🙏14 -
Happy Teacher's Day
Who thought learning would stop after School/College? Have been learning since childhood (though not as much as I should) and it will continue forever. I thank all the Teachers, Class Mates, My Parents, My Brother, My Friends, My Colleagues, My Seniors, My Juniors, My Managers and other Superiors. Everyone contributed their part 🙏🙏🙏
Edit - Totally Forgot Google and Co. Thank you won't suffice
Much more learning to come! Happy Learning :-)4 -
Hey guys!!
So... there are already a few sites, web apps and stuff related to Devrant out there.
Like the DevRant banner and stuff...
Can you please tell me/us about stuff what we already have and what people already made?
Thank you.
PS.: I'm needing a project urgently, I'll be making a DevRant portal today with all the stuff you say here, even if it's just for me. need the distraction.
some Html, PHP, CSS, and Bulma, didn't finish a project like this yet, it's time.
Thanks for your support so far guys.12 -
Ok, I'm fed up with this, just read something about android constantly monitoring your phone's location, now it's time to shut this up.
Would you please be so kind and share information on which alternative "privacy-first" OS I could use and how to flash my device? For all I know, it runs a custom HTC modified OS. I'm quite unfamiliar with all those things gravitating Android. Heard about Cyanogen mod but that's about it.
What about compatibility with apps downloaded through the play store? (thinking about Threema) I would also need compatibility with WhatsApp (yeah, sucks, I know, but hard to convince regular people)
Thank you all :)2 -
Yesterday evening I updated Windows 10 on my PC to 1909. Everything was fine, just a quick update.
Today I saw that all my VMs in VMWare Workstation don't work anymore. And they contained all my work for university.
Okay, let's just revert back to 1903. This can't a problem, right?
But Windows decided that it should revert back to 1809, not to 1903.
Also that was my home PC, and I had remote connection.
Yes, now it doesn't work too, because Windows removed Chrome Remote Desktop while reverting.
Thank you, Windows.
Thank you, Workstation.8 -
just so you guys know, I'll be busy with school, and won't have time to be on the devCraft server much.
I trust the judgement of *Mehrsun, dsteiner, *YoungWolves, AlgoRythm, and privateGer. These people get the say when i'm not around.
Thank you all who came those first few days - really l8fted my spirits. i'm happy you all have another way to "socialize" over the net with eachother.2 -
Yesterday,
I was reading the code from my mentor and plugging it into my project.
I noticed a statement that at that moment seemed buggy to me.
Asked my mentor if that's needed, he looked at it and said no it's not needed remove it and said thank you to me.
Later, I noticed that statement wasn't extra at all, but some part of my code was not as it was supposed to be hence that statement seemed buggy.
I should be telling this to my mentor but i liked that thank you. :/ what will happen when he finds out that ?? lol2 -
Well after weeks (or months. I lost track) of lurking I finally joined yesterday and I'm already ordering my stickers! Thank you all for making it a community worth joining!

Hey all.
I have a non-technical question.
I'm a university drop out for financial reasons where i live and i have been working in the field for 8 years as a backend dev and some dev-ops on the side.
My question is what are my chances of finding a good job in europe (italy germany uk france ... Etc) without a degree?
And what is the range of my annual salary on average?
And thank you for your help.5 -
Hi guys I'm new here. I have been learning python since past few days. And I'm also fimiliar with javaScript as well. but its been quite a while.

Please don't use OS specific libraries/binaries/build tools...etc
I'm talking to C/C++ users here. once in a while I see something on github maybe im just curios maybe I find your niche code useful but then you use make (who the hell still uses make?) or your library depends on another library than can only be mindlessly installed in a unix environment. and the most obscene of all a solution file...
thank god for rust.14 -

You send out an email to your client with corrections on the requirements they have sent you (you know, those crappy requirements we all get), basically explaining how their application should work. They thank you for being there for them. An hour later, you get an email from the client with questions on why the development is going so slow...
Wow. -
thank you for unexpectedly changing your code i included on your recommendation and now all of my modules are broken!
even if this is just a side project i hate when others break my shit and i don't even have the time to fix it.1 -
Thank you hoogle for synching all of those images for that html book with you "fotos" app without notifications like every other picture you can find up there. I just discovered this and it apparently happened 3 years ago.4

I want you all to take a little read at this.
I'm going to use the power of internet and social networks to say the MOST truthly fact that you are going to read in your entire life. Here we go:
Java is to JavaScript as much as Car is to Carpet.
Thank you for you attention.

Thank you hosing company, all you had to do was rebuild the crummy php 5.2 cgi with an up to date version of openssl that supports tls 1.2 so the PayPal integrations work for the seven customers who are too fucking tight to pay to have their sites upgraded to something modern...
Not set all 120 sites across five servers to run on php 5.2..
Assholes!2 -
This is my worst day ever! I so fucking hate the sh**t gitkraken right now! Its always slow and buggy i got it and i accept it but its a lyer!

So a teacher supposedly promised to introduce me to "web Scripting" as he called it.
Time to learn and all he does is show me Dreamweaver and copy and paste code from anywhere you can imagine, he literally didn't know anything about code .
I thank God I realized that it was better to learn code .1 -
Handed off my code to Devs working on main products. Long presentation explaining everything.
Have discussion afterwards about what it does, but not how it looks.
They say thank you, I say you're welcome, and since this is my first bigger project, if they have some pointers or glaring defects in the code I'd welcome the feedback.
They all start laughing. I do too but in my head I'm like "wtf, I ask for feed back and you laugh? That's."
It's been bothering me.2 -
Great winows update caused all my vms to reboot breaking my dev environment. Thank you windows 10.1

Ok this will be silly guys, but this is my last hope, please help me. I am looking for a website "framework" but I can't remember the name. It is commercial, its website is all white using some black slab/serif fonts and it has a side navigation, the purpose of the framework is to easily create websites with full page scroll. it has multiple layouts, really similar to webslides or the slides framework from the guys at designmodo. If you know it or you are the developer behind it, please write link/name in comments thank you in advance!!

I love watching how all these retards who were laughing from people who took the virus seriously from the start turn into the same ones they made fun of and thinking they are the smartest and best. Fucking proud of you all, thank you for doing such a service for all of humanity. Or people who think they "can't" get sick so they endanger the others. Why are people so stupid and they wake up only if it is already too late? Is it so fucking hard to stay at home? To not go skiing? To not be selfish and sit on your fucking arse at home? Fuck!

iOS/native app devs!
How usual it is for your apps to differ from iOS UI guidelines? Our lead dev always throws a fit when he has to implement custom stuff, but I see popular games “shit all over” these guidelines all the time and do very well in popularity.
As I’m no expert, please tell me if it is generally accepted to not follow these iOS rules / use premade controls 100% of the time, so I know what’s up. Thank you.2 -
In Kotlin or Java, I have a list of items that have an ID property. This list is generated based on another list. Now I get a List of mentioned list items and I want to select all items in the parent list, selecting by ID equality.
Is there a more elegant way than just iterating the parent lost for each derived item? Thank you :)5 -

Is it a good approach to have a master SSL key for all your servers when making the authentication?
I am a Developer, but when you work in a company with two developers and you are the senior one you have to learn a lot of stuffs. I am learning more in depth things about how to secure the servers and network.
Now, I am expanding the servers. Splitting the code and database in three different servers (code, Master DB, Slave DB) and configuring Master-Slave databases.
My questions are:
1. Is it a good approach to have a master SSL key for all your servers?
2. Is is a good approach to use the same SSL key for Master database server and Slave database server?
Any other suggestions are welcome.
Thank You in advance!2 -
So, I jump in my car, in a hurry to get somewhere. I pull out my phone, start up Waze and ....
it hangs. Won't pay any attention. All I want to do is bring up the keyboard so I can start typing so I can get the address in before I have my hands on the wheel.
Nope, it's busy doing something ... ah, there it goes. What was so important?
"Here's where you are."
Oh ... why thank you, I had no idea I was in my own driveway. Good to know.1 -
Does somebody have any experience with LXC/LXD containers on servers? I basicaly want all the services separated, but still have an easy way to manage the networking/routing for all the services and containers.
Any reference, guide or tool that helped you in master this subject?
Thank you in advance!4 -

Earlier this day, I read that Strapi is dropping its support for MongoDB. I was a bit bummed at first, but their reasoning was good and I moved from MongoDB Atlas to CloudSQL.
From that point on my day got so much better: Now my strapi backend is so much faster than before! I cannot believe, that I just got to migrate to SQL. Should have done this a long time before.
All operations are literally 2-3 times as fast as before. Thank you @strapiDevelopers for forcing me to migrate :D -
Hey guys - I hope everyone is doing very well as always - I'd love to know , on My Ubuntu is it possible to make modifications of my system through Code? - Perhaps i need to download the part I'm interested in making modifications to? any suggestions or recommendations you'd make as to how you would do that? thank you all once again!
Or maybe its not such a good idea for a beginner to be doing such things?
Cheers! <35 -
To all Python devs: if you want to use curly braces like in C-like languages use this import statement:
from __future__ import braces
Thank me later :D1 -

Fuck you sophos. Fuck you hard. I moved a server to a new datacenter and it worked like a charm. Thank you windows and hyper-v. BUT! BUUUUUUT my fucking sophos worked like shit. Blocking everything by default? Yeah fuck you. Reconfigured everything. Still blocked and why? Forward “all“ doesnt mean forward all. Had to apply rules from port tcp 1 - 65335 and udp 1-65335. Nice you piece of fuck.2
