Not sure. On an old laptop of mine, the built-in broadcomm network adaptor was coincidentally broken when installing Linux Mint. I first thought that it was the Linux Broadcomm driver's fault, but reinstalling Windows and the orginal drivers wouldn't bring the network adaptor back. It had gone west and kicked the bucket. To be fair, the laptop was very old and it was probably just a matter of time when it would have broken down anyway. Shortly after, the hard drive stopped working properly and then something happened to the BIOS, and eventually it wouldn't boot up at all.

Yeah, it could. It happens to me sometimes when I try to install proprietary Nvidia drivers. It's the first time I see someone from here not hating on Windows but on Linux. Finally.

@ScribeOfGoD Everything was fine until I dual booted with Ubuntu. Battery lasts only an hr, wifi adapter is fucked, have to regular connect/disconnect to get it to work..

@Agred Nvidia drivers are killer. My laptop wouldn't even boot after installing them on mint, tried to troubleshoot it but it was taking too long, I reinstalled the OS and then never installed the drivers again.

Just you. Or maybe you have some very specific hardware. Or maybe you have an NVidia graphics card, in which case I guess we can all say.

Can confirm the battery problem. With windows it was 6 hours, with Ubuntu it's like 2 hours now. But no regrets. Fuck you windows.

I had problems with wifi drivers on win before, but on ubuntu:
- no wifi,
- no bluetoot,
- always on cable, because battery allways 0%

googled, browsed the ubuntu forums, Stack pages, no luck

Yeah I guess it's never even a competition in the battery department. I just got used to the lousy battery life. But tlp works rather well on ThinkPads. I can get at least 4-5 hours backup on a P50.

@chaddhag I'm actually getting better battery life than I did with Windows, with that said though windows was always in performance mode and I don't use the official Ubuntu install but rather the elementary os distro based on Ubuntu

@gitlab I believe it really depends on the laptop. From my previous WiFi driver research I found that my HP laptop hardware is optimised for windows. So I'm guessing that's why my Ubuntu sucks so much when it comes to battery. But as I said before - no regrets - android studio starts in 10 seconds on a good day and max 15-20 seconds . I consider that a win over 25 minute on windows.

@Bluecoolant if it's a broadcom wifi adapter then having issues with the wifi is normal, low battery life is also pretty normal but in my experience installing tlp should help with that.

It's been a while since I used Ubuntu on a laptop, but I didn't have any trouble then. Also though, I abided by my cardinal rule: don't use gnome, unity, KDE, or Cinnamon.

For all those who got battery problems I Ubuntu, I get about 3 hours back-up on my Asus laptop and same goes for windows also.
P.S. it's just 1.5 years old
