People won't bother once to find out what kind of potato they are.
People actually are potatoes s now.
Sow people, grow sharing, harvest data, repeat

But what's new in this ?
Anyone who has ever advertised on Facebook knows the kind of detailed targetting they provide.

Why is this a surprise ?

    Spoiler alert!
Google and Amazon also love to collect data to target advertisements.

Hold on for a second here. This isn't about Facebook collecting data, this is about Facebook having poor privacy controls which led to a third party company being able to abuse the data of 50+ million people.

The thing is that this external company wasn't blocked soon enough for violating Facebook's own ToS in regard to the data the company requested AND the things it used it for.

So yes, this is both about Facebook fucking up hard and another company abusing Facebook's external data access.

@Teknas for the full story, a data analytics company, Cambridge Analytica, has (at least is accused of) collected data from millions of Facebook users illegally, and tried to influence the US presidential vote with it. And Facebook more or less let that happen

@linuxxx And before people start going like 'well the users gave away their own data' - yes and no. The users granting permissions did but due to some data access or whatever issue, all their friends data, even the ones who never used the fucking app or said *yes* to their data being used got also got into that companies hands.

Now that's a huge fucking privacy issue on Facebook's side right there.

And the funny idea that deleting some accounts will solve the problem :)

@marcom Solves the problem for those who deleted their accounts. So long as they stay away, at least.
