Meh. Translate might not give a good translation a lot of the time, but if you're wondering what a news article or similar in another language is about it will allow you to get some information at least.

Pah. I translated a Chinese blog into English about a microcontroller and which traces I had to kill and which pins I need to reconnect to hack that thing into working for me. All without pictures. Google translate my not get the grammar right, but you get the idea.
Also try to get grammar into a set of rules you can automatically apply to any set of words. Good luck with that

I always found that Google can translate words pretty well. But it fucks up sentences. Probably due to context, or the way things are said in a particular language.

The only way to get an actual translation (not a literal one) is for a person who understands both languages to make the translation.

Maybe a problem for machine learning?

And then there are things that don't have a real translation!

Ever had that moment of trying to say "Buen provecho" in English?

It's basically a Spanish "Bon appetite"

Well they are Latin languages. I've even heard them called "lenguas romances" (from Rome).

There was an interesting auxiliary language called "Interlingua". It's basically compression of all the other Latin languages. The point of it is that it can be understood by anyone that knows one of the original languages. It's pretty cool.
