Summary

Open Source Disaster Response Thingy

Description
The idea is an expansion of a tiny side project of mine. Inspired by @Nitwix post https://devrant.com/rants/1461936/so-i-just-saw-an-ad-on-twitter-about-a-project-launched-by-ibm-and-the-linux-fou Where he references this: https://developer.ibm.com/callforcode/ After living through a disaster, and realizing that the local and American government was just another disaster, I thought about preparing for the next one. What? Basically, I want to create multiple projects that are related to disasters (mostly natural disasters). Small things that could go a long way. Why? According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the deaths related to Hurricane Maria in PR is 70 times greater than the official estimate. Most of these could have been avoided. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsa1803972 How? People coming together to solve an issue. We saw it after the storm, the many donations people made. Their response was many times faster than the governments.

    I'm so happy that my post inspired you! :D

    If you want help on a project, I'll gladly participate (I do mostly web frontend but I'd love to learn other things). I'm currently doing my end high school exams but I'll have time to code this summer :D

    Uh, so what exactly are these projects?

    @Nitwix
    I'd love to say that I'll be working on this. But I already promised myself not to take on anymore side projects. At least until I finish one. Hopefully, later this month.

    @PrivateGER
    I say multiple projects, because the idea is to have many small projects that will help this one goal. The goal is to reduce the impact that these disasters have on people.

    The one I'm working on now is a sort of Inventory app. To keep stock of food, batteries and water, as well as their expiration date. I will actually be using this project this year, in case we get hit again.

    Call me a prepper, but my country lost all electricity on September 21, 2016. And then lost water, electricity, and all forms of communication on September 20, 2017. Thats less than a year by a day. Fuck yeah I wanna be ready!

    More projects include:
    - Websites with information
    - DIY tools for "survival" or camping
    - Useful Applications for different reasons
    - More accessible communication based on ham radio frequency
    - Survey for electricity and water.

    You get the idea, basically anything that could be used in the event of an emergency.
