Good morning devRant community, so currently im on my early morning commute to College, and it got me thinking.

So I’m very passionate about programming but i also love playing around with the Stock Markets, Are there Software Engineering positions which work with the markets? I’ve been thinking its called a “Quant” but im not too sure, Also does anyone have any possible experience within the field? What it takes to get in etc?.

I highly appreciate it! Hope you have an amazing day/night. :-)

"QuantDeveloper" was an old title of mine. Focused on building shit to create Buy/Sell triggers.

@fattymiller That sounds awesome!, was it a stressful job?

Not even a little bit, but I was only a wee junior at the time.

    It was pretty fun, though.

Can't help you get in though, I got lucky and was approached out of uni..

@fattymiller it’s fine I understand, any advice? I’ve got about one year left of Uni and I’m really interested in that field :-)

If you are a good person you wont like markets long enough. It has been proven, mathematically that stock prices vary randomly.

It would be very different to study finance, tho. Also try to understand what you like about finance or stocks. For me it was the complexity arising from many non related / semi related and related factors that made a market.

I found that computers are pretty fucking complex, specially when working on a comercial big product, and the beauty is that there are no humans making irrational choices. And fucking up your elegant model.

@carlosjpc oh i see, I’m quite what you would call “the nice guy”, do you really need to do a degree in Finance? Because I’ve got about another year left in my IT degree, and personality i cant wait to get into the industry :-). Cheers and ive heard it’s very complex 🤔

@KingMilo if you want to work for a investment bank, then yes. That ppl tend to like 'authentification papers' why not search for a p2p lending mis size startup or something along those lines?

@carlosjpc cheers boss!, you wont need a degree in Finance to work for a bank as a software engineer right? Appreciate it!
