Why not summing twice the large rectangle of 0,25x1 so 0.5 then taking off the 0.25x0.25 =0,0625
So 0,5-0,0625=0,4375

Yeah, I don't get what's confusing. Also, it is more easily written as:
(0.25*2)-(0.25^2)
Or, if you wanted to be more descriptive:
((1*0.25)*2) - ((0.25*0.25)*1)
Or, if you didn't want to be subtractive:
((0.5*0.25)*2) + ((0.25*0.25)*3)

Also, the unoccupied surface stays the same if you shift the bands to the side of the squares. This way you can just determine it being equal to 1-(0.75^2)
