Because modifying the serverside script to add the copyright year isn't enough...
Lets use JavaScript and let the user's browser do all the work!

    Company folds in the coming years, but the waybackmachine saves the site. Centuries from now, the footer will still happily state the page is copyrighted in 2219.

    Perfect combination of laziness and speed optimisation. ;-)

    I've left out the lazy part and change the date in the footer template each year, then recompile the site and upload all HTML files.
