Whenever a site needs my credit card into for a 'free' trial, I email them, asking for the CEO's credit card #. If it's free, they should give me his # and not mess with mine! And please, needing a credit card # for age verification?
The problem is of course that we're all adults. This kind of thing is aimed a teens who think nothing of grabbing their mom or dad's credit card #, wh. of course begins getting charged after the free trial. How do you explain those porn charges to your wife before you've had a chance to talk to your offspring who effed up big time [but hopefully got some decent porn out of the whole deal! lol]?

My personal policy is that I will never do business with a company that runs these kind of "free trials". If it was about offering a trial, you could just terminate the service after the trial was up, maybe even send an email notice about it. That would be the forthright, honest thing to do.

No, it's not about offering a trial, it's about you hoping I forget about it and getting to ding me for a month, and then making me talk to your "retention" people (rather than clicking a button on your website) when I get my next bill. And while I am generally nice on the phone to people, even telemarketers, I will unleash holy hell on people who are this unholy combination of sales droids and who are paid to convince (read: con) me into not to do the thing I called in to do in the first place.

When I take over the world, it will be a capital offense to offer a trial in this manner, or to not have online cancellation for something that can be subscribed to online.

There should be some service that can provide you with some credit card details for these cases. The card would then expire immediately after registering it.

@rEaL-jAy agree, it's not that hard to cancel, but that doesn't excuse their intentions. A trial should be just that, no strings test it out kind of trial. If you like what you see, you sign up. Keep it simple, and as a bonus they will have fewer PO'ed customers.
