Ryzen Threadripper desktops talking:

Windows: Should I upgrade to ecc ram?

Linux: The utility of ecc is lost on an operating system that is orders of magnitude more unstable than the hardware on which it runs.

Only if your motherboard supports it. Threadripper and Ryzen technically do support ECC, but it's not officially so, so motherboard OEMs don't have to enable it.

So make sure your motherboard has it enabled, and then go for it. Otherwise it's a waste of your time and money.

Isnt ecc ram slower and only useful for mission critical applications?
    Why even bother?

ECC is always good because the disk write cache is also in RAM, and silent file corruption often goes unnoticed for months.

Oh, and the Linux user should update his knowledge because he's comparing current Linux to Windows 98. Some retards among the Linux users really like to fall for that mistake.

In a past job that required writing 300gb files often i have actually hit ram corruption several times. Since the server supported ecc but was with normal ram for some reason we upgraded and problem went away. So yeah. It works.
