Excel has “sort anything that looks like a number as a number” option for this reason.

@bkwilliams yea but if I recall, and unless it's gotten better, it can't tell a number in the middle of a word.

works fine. but:

ab1
ab10
ab2

the numbers arent at the start, therefore it's a string. maybe Excel has fixed this (please correct me if they have) but a lot of other software shows this inconsistency.
