you asked a question. obviously. how could you not k ow whatever it is you're asking about already? what do you think stack overflow is for, asking questions? hah! yea right.
-
MHammer856yNoob here when it comes to StackOverflow.
As far as I have understood you need to be able to answer your own question before some other dude respons.
If you do not do this within a specific time span, your question automatically get a downvote....
I've have been there. -
MHammer856yAddition to my comment:
I forgot a winking smiley ;)*
I think it is just StckOvrflw user customs for noobs like us :D
*some irony may occur -
Stackoverflow had a "welcome wagon" event last year which was meant to make everyone be way more welcoming.
Problem is, they implemented it really badly, and now you can easily be chastised for leaving a friendly comment explaining what's wrong if someone decides it's not what they want to hear - I've had that happen to me once already.
The net effect is that unfortunately, many seasoned users that would have previously left such comments now just D/V and move on. -
MHammer856y@AlmondSauce
They should make it so that you have to give a reason why you downvote. I'm not the high on points, so I am not able to downvote yet, which I think is a good thing, taken the new "noob" users like us, that maybe is used to Reddit. :) -
@MHammer Oh I'm not saying that's a good thing. I tend to avoid downvoting on all but the very worst of questions (I'll generally comment rather than downvoting, which as above has been to my detriment once or twice!)
-
Maer17826yHe who shan't google a simple problem may also not read SO rules and guidelines (disregard for which causes 99.9% of downvotes).
-
@Maer that is not really true. If anything it would be more of a 20% chance of downvoting. Everything else happens because of assholes
-
Maer17826yI disagree. Spend a week actively on SO. Almost all downvoted questions are lacking. People repeating questions that are solved, not providing what they alread attempted, not providing enough info and so on.
I too have been infuriated in the past by downvotes that were never explained. However once you start answering questions yourself, you quickly come to realize that a vast majority of questions are redundant and many are lazy/stupid. -
Maer17826yThough I will concede, the community is somewhat cold. CS people are very prone to pointing out mistakes or showing off knowledge.
Still, at the end of the day, this is not a socializing-site, by a collection of technical knowledge. -
@Maer guess I should downvote you because you don't know how to reply to people.
See how petty and gay that shit is? That is S.O -
@Maer lol oh look! You resorted at making assumptions. Yup, typical S.O attitude. Must be a moderator ;)
-
Maer17826y@AleCx04 Yeah get off the high horse. I disagreed with you, you just came out calling me petty. I even made the extra effort to concede that there was some merrit to what you said with an additional comment - no acknowledgement there, just "disagreement? BOOM - you're petty!".
So yeah, all that is left to me is inference. If you act like this on SO, then I can imagine how you post questions and when they get downvoted it is all because "SO is so so mean", not because your question was garbage. -
@Maer wait what? I never called YOU petty. I called S.O petty not you. Read again wtf.
Check it out, level with me for a minute. I have never asked a question in S.O, i have helped others because I don't see myself as some sort of deity that gets to judge who codes and who doesn't. People have been downvoted just because idiots there get butthurt at not being able to answer something. The rules get twisted enough for moderators to be extremely unhelpful and judgemental. And if you are kind enough to answer a downvoted question, regardless of how correct your answer is, you get downvoted too.
The website(not you. Just in case you misread again) is petty and unhelpful. This is the opinion of long time contributors, not just buthurt newbies. -
Maer17826y@AleCx04 Don't think I misread, surely you can see how "that shit" can be easily read as referring to my comment, especially since you were explicitely referring to it two lines above.
But yeah, let's level, no need to waste time fighting.
As mentioned - I see where you're coming from and definitely had this experience before as well. Having my question downvoted, no comment, no mod-edit, just "here, eat minus" and that is then that. All I am saying is, I also used to answer questions relatively frequently and the amount of nonsense one reads is plain ridiculous. People refuse to google the simplest things, there are tons of redundant posts, posts about homework, posts without effort. We can agree to disagree what contributes more to downvotes, to me it is the quality of the questions rather than community attitude.
Possibly the "cold feel" comes from SO being a fact-collection. Being corrected for the most minor things, cause they're not perfectly correct can be upsetting. -
See, we agree :) @Maer and when I said how "petty and shitty that was" i was referring to the action of downvoting for something minor
-
...On a separate note, feel free to link said question here and someone may be able to help. (I'll certainly try if it fits my expertise, though that's anything but guaranteed of course.)
-
@Farhia your mistake was to create an account on SO. Use SO without account, and everything will be OK.
-
Farhia1856y@AlmondSauce Thanks! I was referring to my previous experience with SO but I appreciate it! 😀
-
@Fast-Nop Or if you already have an account with some reputation points and you don't wanna lose them, you can quickly create a throwaway accout for a "risky" question. That's what I usually do :)
-
I visit SO questions daily, but I could never become part of it, or even ask too much questions.
I think the reason why I could never become part of it is because I have these things called emotions, empathy... I mean, I'm not fucking gandhi right in terms of goodness, but when someone says demeaning things to me... that shit kinda hurts...
So I try to stay away from it, someone might say "are sure it's not your ego????". Nah, i just don't like being trated like I'm a lazy idiot...
If you’re going to downvote my stackoverflow question, at least tell me why? What did I do wrong? 😓
