DVWA (Damn Vulnerable Web Application) is a good start
vulnhub.com for the win (all the machines are free)
You could also check out pentesterlab.com for some free machines
Once you've gained some experience, hackthebox.eu is really amazing

I've got the feeling that you didn't mean Capture The Flag. I feel betrayed. 😢

@Commodore CTF means capture the flag in this context. You hack into a machine or program and try to find the flag

-.. started playing around on hackthebox. There are some simpler challenges (stego, crypto, forensics, etc.) you can even do offline. Still hard for me as a beginner, with no knowledge about the tools, assembler, web stuff,.. but apart from the frustration quite fun.
