I’m a mid level dev in a team of three devs (one jr and another “mid”), but the other mid is super lost all the time and is pretty much useless.

I have to do all his work because he can’t seem to handle simple tasks. He’s taking the whole sprint to do stuff that takes me or even the Jr dev less than 3 days.

I have no idea how he managed to get mid position in the first place. I don’t have a problem in helping someone catch up, but I feel like I’m basically explaining technical stuff to my mom. Nothing seems to catch up on him.

I’ve already talked to my manager about him, but unfortunately we are understaffed so she feels it’s unsafe to get rid of him, but I’m starting to consider taking up the load instead of having to deal with him much longer. This shit is honestly stressing me out so much I’ve considered simply quitting.

    Okay this is serious, I’ve been in your situation and it sucks

    1) when you help him out or share his workload, make it be known. What I mean by this is document the shit out of it. Any tickets you pick up, delays caused by him and so on. Document the shit out of it. When the time comes where management wonders why things are taking time you can use this to simply show who is fucking it up.

    2) Secondly try having a direct conversation with the person. Sometimes it surprisingly works.

    3) when you share his workload, see if you and another person can pick it up instead of you taking up the workload alone. This has helped me in the past.

    4) This is not something that you can brush under the carpet and you have to deal with it one day or the other. The sooner the better.

    5) If the manager is not listening, I suggest you find a way to give her the D to atleast smooth things out.

    @hatemyjob thanks for the tips. I’ve definitely let it be known that I’m doing a lot of the work. And we’ve had a talk about this before because at some point I simply snapped and told him off. I just need him to actually perform better and take ownership of his shit.
