Twenty years ago I worked nights in a tier-1 control room, paging out oncalls to respond to red alarms, and jockeying incident tickets to track events. Pretty typical first job in the industry. A lot of what we did dealt with handling issues with routers and switches, so a friend who also worked there told his nontechnical roommates that he worked with switches. His roommate proceeded for years to think and say to people, "Geoff pulls levers."
