lotd79227yOne of the smartest things I've heard boss say: "always multiply a programmers estimate by Pi."
Same seems to go for construction workers though -
@lotd Here's a few numbers of Pi from you to make it more accurate

I negotiate prices from a buyer viewpoint all the time and from a seller perspective I usually start with 40% margin where my bottom price is 20%.

Same.
Pm: "How long is this gonna take?"
Me: "About a month"
Pm: "We need it in a week"
Me: "thats not how time works, go back to the CTO and tell her your original estimate was baseless and you need more money".
I had a pm come to me recently with "we think this should take 5 days". He had no clue what he was asking or about any of the tech behind it.
Turned out btw he wanted a "front end for XML, to parse the XML, let the users change the values and save it back as XML".
His 5 day estimate turned to 20 minutes for me to send him links to XML editors.
Another instance I've had was a pm pushing estimates to the point they weren't possible, "the company's future depends on you finishing this task next Friday" for a 4 week task.
I took the pragmatic approach and didn't touch his project because I could spend the time being productive and actually helping people elsewhere.
His interactions with me became much more reasonable the week after when he found his task hadn't been started.

HAVE YOU JUST TRIED TO BARGAIN ON MY ESTIMATE?!
I really hate when people try to bargain on my estimates. It's done when I say so. I really think it through before I tell you the deadline, so GO FUCK YOURSELF PLEASE AND SHUT THE FUCK UP. NEVER EVER BARGAIN ON THAT AGAIN.
If you do, it will take one week longer for every time you try it.
