Summary

A curated list of awesome websites, tools and resources on internet across different categories and genres.

Description
Yesterday I posted an image of certain useful links which was appreciated by many. Some said that the list can be improvised. That inspired me to create a curated list of awesome websites, tools and resources on internet across different categories and genres. This entire concept is inspired by the feedback on my post, post by @xzvf and below Github repository: https://github.com/sindresorhus/awesome If interested in contributing or promoting, then comment your Gitlab username and I shall add you to it.

    Count me in I'm not currently on Gitlab, I'll create account today.

    @const let us know once done.

    username : satwikgawand

    Should it just be kept as a markdown list or are you planning to make it as an interactive thing? I think you can use every repo for pages in gitlab.

    Any plans on communication platform?
  • 0
    @rockford5281 Markdown.

    And you can propose the medium of communication.
  • 1
  • 1
    I don't have any in mind. I'd etter let the more experienced people make that decision.

    Quite interested!

    @Floydian Just make sure we have access to create branches, It says I'm trying to push to a protected branch when doing a push on my own branch.

    Idk if thats because there is nothing on master or whatever. πŸ€”

    I'm not used to gitlab.
  • 1
    @Floydian Thank you, kind prophet
  • 1
    @Jilano Added. Just check if you received the invitation as there were multiple with same username.

    @BigBoo I am not very used to git (I just know basics so maybe others who are good at it can take a lead here), so let me a sample readme.md and you can try again.

    Also, do we need branches? Isn't this just a markdown list?
  • 2
    @Floydian Branches just make sure someone basically doesn't fuck up the repository and remove shit. So people copy the master branch, then they create their own branch and do a pull request against master.

    Then it's up to the maintainer (you in this case)

    To accept or reject requests to update the repo (pull-request, merge-request)

    When you accept, that branch is merged with master.
  • 0
    @BigBoo Do I get a notif when somebody requests me to accept? Or what's the process?

    Also, let's make sure nobody fucks up the master.

    We must draft certain rules and format to follow while contributing.
  • 1
    @Floydian I'll do a sample request soon, I'm not awesome at markdown, but I know the essentials.
  • 0
    @BigBoo sure. Go ahead man.
  • 3
    @Floydian We could do the following.
    Each piece of content gets a short one line description and a link in the README.md file.
    We create folders for different categories and in the right one a new file containing a description (or if they are source code the files).
  • 1
    @xzvf That seems to be a great idea.

    - Category

    - Link

    - One liner description

    Are folders different from branches? If yes then won't they complicate the merging and management?

    Like we can have a portal/one page webpage where anybody can submit their links and we can merge/add to the lists after verification by either one of us.

    What do you think?
  • 2
    @xzvf I'll add a CONTRIBUTING.md in a couple hours, once I'm back at my laptop. I'm currently in school.
  • 1
  • 2
    @Floydian Ok. I have to go to class. Merging will not be a problem.
  • 1
    @dfox: We cannot add or edit a collab via web.

    When edited, got the following error message. Could you please look into this? Thanks :)
  • 2
    Store the list as json array or something similar and make a github.io page. That page could then create html for this list including meta information such as if the page specified in a list item ist currently online, etc.
  • 1
  • 1
    Not sure how much I'll be able to contribute. If anything at all but I'd like to be added.

    @ruhe Hey that's a nice idea. Join us.

    @RantSomeWhere Join us and contribute. We are collating across categories.

    @Condor You want me to add you, because I didn't get that?

    @theKarlisK That inspired us, I already posted the github link in summary, but yes, the website thing is cool.

    @NefixEstrada You want me to add you too?
  • 2
    @Floydian
    It'll be better to set up some sort of communication to discuss all of the stuff.
    options:
    - slack
    - discord
    - riot.im
    - zulip

    that's all I have in my mind right now.
    Suggest other or decide on one.

    As for the content, I think we can keep a Markdown version and a 'gitlab.io' page so that the content is stored properly and provides interactive and easier exerience instead of a huge list.

    Also, we need to work on proper categorization of the content.
  • 1
    shit, devRantron didn't load the comments in real time and I repeated some stuff everyone already said.
  • 1
    @rockford5281 Agreed.

    We are aimless as of now with the idea. We need a structure and a format to follow.

    Communication channel is a good idea, but I am sure we won't be able to decide on one.

    I think, Gitlab has it's own chat feature. Let me explore, if that works, we are good to go.
  • 1
    @Floydian would love to. I will check the repo out as soon as I can.
    But I don't know if I will have the time to actively contribute
  • 0
    @ruhe Sure, just share me your Gitlab username and I shall add you.

    @Condor already added :)

    @NefixEstrada added :)

    @Rantsomewhere added :)

    @rockford5281 no worries.
  • 1
  • 1
    @Floydian yah, the website was the simplest and most consistent way to point to it since "Awesome list" is spread out across multiple Git repos, often with different maintainers and covering wide range of topics.
  • 1
    @ruhe Added :)

    @theKarlisK we are trying to achieve the same. Maybe re-inventing the wheel? Maybe even better with our process and results?

    We are trying our best to give back to the community :)
  • 1
    @Floydian suggestion, try to keep it together more than awesome list... while, a great resource, I feel it has grown to big and too wide - I, for example, don't even know where it starts or where it ends anymore... or who are the original creators.
  • 0
    @theKarlisK yup, that's true. I am currently working on structuring and how stuff will work.

    We don't want to lose the track or enthusiasm on the way.
  • 1
    @Floydian Add me in.

    Currently not on GitLab Will set up soon and get you updated
  • 1
  • 1
    @Floydian I don't have a Gitlab account ATM, but I'll create one now
  • 1
    Count me in! I'm keksprache there, too.

    alexandru-cazacu

    But I'm under exams right now so I won't be able to help too much.
  • 0
    Isn't this basically what reddit is? And the awesome stuff are subreddits?
  • 0
    @hashedram No.

    You can check the links I have shared in the summary.

    @cr4sh @keksprache @daemonAD @Nitin1607 @NefixEstrada @Charmesal @Condor @RantSomeWhere @ruhe @xzvf @BigBoo @Jilano @cave @rockford5281 @const

    Okay we are 16 people and I believe that would be enough as of now. Hence, we will stop accepting collaborators as of now.

    Time to move into execution.

    1) We need to figure out a good name for this project. I have thought of 'Lister' as in something or somewhere we can list stuff down. Please provide your feedback on this. Alternatively, you can suggest name as well. The one loved by most will be finalised.

    2) We need to set some rules and format standards for ourselves, as don't want this to be a shit-fest and fail. Let's do it professionally. Let's create a structure to this entire thing and design an architecture for the process we and others could follow.
  • 4
    @cr4sh @keksprache @daemonAD @Nitin1607 @NefixEstrada @Charmesal @Condor @RantSomeWhere @ruhe @xzvf @BigBoo @Jilano @cave @rockford5281 @const

    4) As this is an open and crowd sourced project we need to define certain rules to contribute. These rules will consists of the format, content criteria and quality, folders and branches.

    These are my points, if you any further inputs do share. The tasks are many so we need to split ourselves into small teams and finish this before we can move forward to next stage and start growing this project.

    So do let me know your area of expertise and interest so that we can form teams and start as early as possible.

    Due credits will be given to every person who is contributing to this idea. Thank you for joining, let's make this happen :)

    I think we need a proper way to comunicate @Floydian

    Like with Gitlab issues, a Discord / Riot / IRC channel, mail...
  • 2
    @NefixEstrada That ain't happening as not everyone will agree on mode of communication.

    I have tried it earlier, you can try it too.

    I would propose Telegram.
  • 1
    @Floydian Maybe we could create a Discord server?
  • 1
    Since we are all in Gitlab, I'd go with that @Floydian
  • 1
    @Floydian seems like a good idea tho I am new for this thing will try to give my opinion as of when we start the execution process.
    As of for name I am thinking about it and will share soon.
    And for communication I am up for telegram.
  • 2
  • 3
    As for the name, how about Linkhub as it'll contain links to resources 😁
  • 1
    I like it! @daemonAD
  • 1
    @daemonAD LinkHub seems nice πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
    Maybe Linking Playground
    Or LinkerzzzπŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
  • 3
    @Nitin1607 @daemonAD @NefixEstrada Linkhub seems cool.

    If everybody agrees, I am good with Discord server.
  • 1
    Then I'll create it, give me one sec
  • 1
  • 2
  • 2
    And we also need to define what kind of resources we would be listing. Would it be just dev related or could include somewhat closely related fields as well (like say OS customization, for example) amongst other stuff?
  • 0
    @NefixEstrada Not everybody has agreed for discord, so let's wait for remaining members to read and revert.

    @daemonAD everything. Check the github repo I shared in summary.
  • 0
    I don't have any issues with Discord as well
  • 1
    Linkhub seems nice, if I have another name I'll be mention here soon.
  • 1
    @Floydian linkhub.xyz available for $1.31/year
  • 0
    I'd prefer an IM service over mail. But that's just my preference
  • 2
    There's a discord up and for those worried, you can run discord in the browser.
  • 1
    What about slack or Flock?
  • 1
    Gonna install Discord. But obviously if we choose other places it's okay.
  • 0
    For those of us who're lazy enough not to search 😁 https://discordapp.com is the URL for in-browser Discord
  • 1
    @Floydian I got some names.
    Like:-
    1.LinkYou
    2.CInfo or SeeInfo
    3.DevThings,DevWorks,Dhome

    Would like to know what other think about it.
  • 1
    @daemonAD need to wait and listen to others as well. It's not just about creating an account or something. People are concerned about privacy. So unless everybody agrees on discord, we will wait. πŸ˜ƒ

    @Nitin1607 why limit this to dev? That wasn't the idea in the first place. Linkhub is good. Let's see what others have to say.
  • 1
    @Floydian what about "lster"?
    Kinda like 'ls' command...
  • 2
    @Floydian If you are going to wait for everyone to agree were going to be here for weeks. Pull some rank and decide on something that seems reasonable.

    There's 16 people here. When have you ever agreed upon something unanimously as a group of 16?
  • 1
    @Floydian I believe we should keep it Dev related for now. Managing and organising the content would be an issue if we consider everything.

    Just a thought, not sure though.
  • 1
    @BigBoo true, but atleast for the majority?

    We are just 4/5 of us rn.
  • 1
    @rockford5281 nah! I don't want to limit the idea to dev. I see no issue in managing it whether dev or non-dev.
  • 1
    @Floydian ok I got your message and it has a kind of crazy relation to it.
    I am ok with linkhub
  • 0
    Okay. Discord it is then.

    Let's keep this comment as last so that whoever comes here knows where to go. Request all to join discord: https://discordapp.com/invite/...
  • 0
    @NefixEstrada I am up with telegram or discord
    Any of them.
    And I agree that communicating here might not be the best idea
  • 0
    @Floydian Majority can be good. Are you keeping track of different peoples preference?
  • 0
    I suggest the names:

    - StashHub

    - LinkStash
  • 0
    Discord as a way of communication works for me.

    I don't really have an area of expertise but I'd like to help with the architecture with someone else. This way I get the chance to improve my git skills as well as help out.

    I suck with names so I'm gonna let you guys handle that one.
  • 0
    Can we get a more structured messaging system than this comment section, I lost track of everything >.>

    EDIT: nevermind

    Btw. going to add some HTML / css related sites I think are quite helpful
  • 0
    @Alice Yup we expired it. As we already have more than 16 members.

    You want to join this? We are still figuring out stuff.
  • 0
    @Alice :/ IDK

    I need to ask others then. Maybe you can guide us?
  • 1
    πŸ“Œ. I am also interested in witnessing the progress, but not sure that I can contribute anything.
  • 1
    I arrived a bit late. It looks an interesting idea. Also search Github for "awesome". There are many and even I created one. They can give more ideas to make this project awesome.
  • 0
    @amitgupta we already mentioned that in our description.

    Let me see if we can reform the team.
  • 2
    Checked the link.. Have some questions..

    Should we have ToC( Table of content)?

    Have we defined some T&C? Otherwise it'll become a never ending list. Eg. 50 stars, or min 1000 downloads per month, license type, or something else

    What if there are multiple sites /projects doing the same stuff?
  • 1
    @amitgupta we are still under discussion for all that.

    Also, this is not limited to dev stuff.
  • 1
    I like how this is evolving, I too have some links I would like to share, how does one go about doing that?

    I was looking around the repo but didn't figured out how... Where can I submit the links or is there a way to "fork" the repo and push the changes?
  • 1
    @Floydian Halp. Why I'm not on the Discord server anymore?
  • 1
    @cr4sh how would I know?

    Btw I quit that group. Will be starting all over again 😊
  • 1
  • 2
    @cr4sh Because lack of organisation and team work.
  • 2
    @Floydian you had a discord group and didn’t invite Mi? Fuck Yu!
  • 2
    @Floydian thats a great tactic, (no sarcasm)
  • 1
    @Codex404 tactic of what?

    @C0D4 Will create one soon.
  • 3
    trying to understand how this differentiates from the many awesome-list repos out on github, could someone elaborate?
  • 1
    @yipcma damn!

    I forgot to respond on this. Apologies.

    Awesome list is restricted to GitHub. People who want to use it should be aware about GitHub in first place.

    Only devs and nerds like us know and have the capability to explore shit on Internet.

    Next, only those with GitHub account and dev knowledge can contribute to it. A layman could not, even if they want to.

    With respect to our idea, there'll be no limitations for a person to use it, explore it or contribute to it.
