I don't understand how after decades, people who know what they're doing don't disable automatic updates as one of the first actions on a newly installed windows machine. People moan about it on here like they don't know.

Why would anyone disable them? In my opinion, people who delay them and then bitch about them being forcefully updated are disabled. It is a fucking update, it is fucking needed. Why is it so hard for people to just restart their pc more than once in a month?

on the other hand, at least you know how your OS works, so you can own it better than the majority of (windows) people here. That's a big plus

Why would anybody in their right mind disable automatic updates on his/her personal computer? (Server/production systems running critical stuff is another story)

Having the most recent updates helps everyone to make the internet a safer place by not becoming a parasite spreading malware or helping in botnets DDOSing websites.

@bahua I tottaly understand that your pc belongs to you, but as soon as you connect to the internet, it is exactly like you take your car (=pc) our for a ride on the streets (=internet). If your car is leaking oil, loses brake fluid, falls apart or is just a piece of crap, police will get you and fine you.
The wellbeing or your pc (read installed software & OS) is only your sole concern if you are offline the whole time.

To all "disabling auto updates": Update your fucking systems!

Because windows updates, if automatic, are completely hamfisted. The rare occasion when I use a windows machine usually involves a check and install of updates, but I do it manually, like I do in Linux.
