Why is my LG Washing Machine using 3.6GB of data/day?

People here a while back were promoting smart homes and connecting their house and appliances to the web. We tried to warn them. They called us boomers and old people who just don't know. Maybe, just maybe, the threat vector exposure surface is real.

Turns out the washing machine was streaming this:

If it’s LG ThinQ that is because it’s thinking how the fuck to wash this shit from those clothes.

The machine can access the internet through wifi.
Thus, it must be capable of basic wifi encryption/encoding protocols.
Those include SHA256 hashing procedures.
Systems that can do SHA256 and can connect to the internet can also, in theory, be used to mine Bitcoin.
Although a simple, underpowered device can hardly find a Bitcoin on its own, if enough of those can be linked then the odds get more favourable.
That is an inefficient way of doing it, of course. But inefficiency is only a problem for those holding the bill, the one that could otherwise be much smaller.
Thus if you manage to get thousands of those machines, you could mint a pretty extra-fake penny.

That or appliance companies have the worst software devs this side of government website contractors.

@porksausages I have the same with my TV. I'm fine with a temporary connection to do an over the air update. Other than that it doesn't need any connectivity to do it's job.

Wish they made that a standard option in all "smart" devices.
