Finally got my new VPS details.

It's very funny to login to your vps from your phone and install a firewall instead of doing it from a bigger screen!

Also the time just went scarily fast while doing that O_o

    @linuxxx you might want to do a blogpost about the firewall, would be interesting to read

    @linuxxx did you delete the comment because of the srcip? 👀
  • 1
    @JoshBent Nope, dst IP 😅

    @linuxxx thats what I meant, yeah - but you are not using any reverse anyway, so somebody pinging it will get it too?
  • 1
    @Linuxxx I know I asked this a million times but I forgot to bookmark it, which VPS provider are you using?
  • 1
    @gitpush Contabo for this VPS :). Their cheapest plan to be exact.

    @JoshBent Get what too?
  • 0
    @linuxxx the server ip
  • 0
    @JoshBent Yeah but how can you ping it if you don't know it?
  • 1
    @linuxxx thanks man I'll bookmark it :3
  • 1
    @linuxxx for some reason I thought you got it for the security website project
  • 1
    @JoshBent Oh no already have a contabo vps for that :P

    @linuxxx whats this one going to be for, some private project or something devrant again?
  • 1
    I end up fixing stuff on my server over my phone quite often. :D

    Do you use Connectbot or another ssh client?
  • 1
    @linuxxx
    Have you ever heared of https://uberspace.de hosting service? Personally I really love what these guys are doing!
  • 1
    @holl I'm using them too. @linuxxx, you'll love their privacy concept. :)
  • 1
    @JoshBent General email server for all my domains :)
  • 2
    @theCalcaholic he uses juicessh
  • 1
    @JoshBent Oh, interesting, thanks. :)
  • 1
    @holl @theCalcaholic the damn! That provider seems awesome! Just wondering, how the hell do I look at their packages and where would i order? (I'm doing my best to translate as well as I'm bad with german :P)

    @linuxxx Basically you give your 'uberspace' (your vps) a name by puttin something in the text field next to the button which says 'ab gehts' on this page: https://uberspace.de/register

    You can opt into their beta by activating the check box beneath (it comes with a new OS version, but still lacks support for some backend languages like nodejs).

    Once you click that button, your vps is created and you get access to it.

    You will be forwarded to a page where you can setup a username and password I believe. The first month is free, after that you can pay whatever you want (so basically still free, you're just encouraged to pay what you deem appropriate).

    @theCalcaholic reading into it; their pricing model sounds a lot like some startup happy world thinking, its purely based on "well hopefully enough people pay atleast X" and will end really quick if they dont actually introduce fixed pricing. Also I can't find what your vps specs actually are that you'll get?
  • 2
    @JoshBent Well there pricing model apparently works out for them. Maybe it's less naive than it sounds.

    I think they just don't set too much value on growth.
  • 2
    @JoshBent Also they mention that they will have to offer you different conditions if you're generating too much traffic. They say, that for other hosters basically the small clients pay for the big ones, which is not a model they want to establish for their services.

    It sounds at if they calculated it thoroughly. I can also imagine that their clients value the service enough to pay at least their prospect of a fair prize (5€ / month).

    @theCalcaholic what server specs are we talking about though per vps, are we talking raspberry pi per client? I see the general specs listed there, but not what you'll actually get.

    @linuxxx When I tried to configure a VPS for the first time I spent like 8 hours on a weekend day. Began right after I ate my breakfast, and when I looked up, I realized it was time for dinner xD
    That's when you know you're doing something you really like :)
  • 3
    @JoshBent I think it's not limited. You shouldn't abuse it though.

    On my uberspace I can see 16GB RAM (which doesn't sound *that* much - about 5GB are free) and 20 cores. Less than 4 are usually used to more than 50% (most are idle actually)
  • 1
    @aaxa That exactly! Every time I do something with setting up/configuring/troubleshooting servers/server stuffs, I can easily get lost for hours and I just fucking love to do that!
  • 1
    @aaxa Also with using Linux servers and having the huge configurability it actually gives me this being in power feeling, like having god mode, being in control and I love that since I don't control much else :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx I completely agree :) It's awesome
  • 0
    @aaxa Slight rephrase, I have a life of bullying and being highly insecure behind me and I always was that someone without a voice/opinion/any form of power/control and when doing Linux servers, I'm finally the one in fucking control.
  • 1
    @aaxa I'm going to make a rant about this tomorrow haha.
  • 1
    @linuxxx Please do. I'm subbed to you anyway :D
  • 2
    @theCalcaholic jesus fucking christ, how much are you paying them for that?
  • 1
    @JoshBent 5€ / month currently :P

    I'm considering to increase the payment when I do a bit more with the server (currently I'm only hosting a single page with little traffic).
  • 1
    @JoshBent Im not sure if I made that clear enough: The hardware specs above are from the whole server though multiple shared hosting clients on it. It seems to be sufficient though (judging from the usual hardware utilization).
  • 1
    @theCalcaholic you're paying them only 5€ per month for that much resources? see that's where the system falls short, also I just dig into their rules a bit more: 100GB per month only. If something sounds too good to be true, it is.
  • 1
    @theCalcaholic I am confused, do you actually own all those resources or did you just read out what the entire server is, where you get a small cut off only?
  • 1
    @JoshBent that's not a hard limit though. They won't cut you off if you reach that quota nor will they complain if you reach it once. They state there that they will negotiate a bigger contract if you generate that level of traffic because it wouldn't be worthwhile for them otherwise or they had to charge more from smaller customers to make up for it.
  • 1
    @JoshBent The latter. I'm not limited to a quota of the ressources but I'm using it together with other people.
  • 2
    @JoshBent You have to understand that they are not really targeted to host for big companies, but rather bloggers, journalists and so on who can also benefit most from the privacy they are granted at uberspace.
