Today I uninstalled WhatsApp, I mean I haven't had a look at it in over a month and nobody texts me anways.

Writing this makes me realize how sad this is

I don't want to support Facebook or any data mining company, instead I want to support (free) / open source software like Signal

    I have heard many using signal. Is it available in Android Marketplace?
  • 2
    @github Sure is: https://play.google.com/store/apps/... !
    And I do know that our little @linuxxx and others have a chat group.

    @Jilano @404response did anyone ever verified it's source code to ensure its secure?

    Welcome to the realm of sanity. 🙂
  • 3
    @github It's even been officially audited :)

    The app Snowden recommends =) we use it in the family, at work not so much.

    Chuck Norris reviewed the audiobook of the Sourcecode and Han Solo approved it :)

    I love signal, but every now and then it glitches out and don't send notifications. But it's totally worth it

    To me, it is a sad sad world when someone feels the need to announce to everyone that they're quitting a social media service. It holds 0 value to me, personally.

    Brax.me

    I follow the developer in periscope a security guy. Check-it out.

    @Fexell Appearantly it holds enough value to you to say that ;)

    @linuxxx None, but at 8pm you can chat with the developer on Periscope. He has a public forum security channel every day.

    @IoTeacher In that case I won't touch the app as I believe that open sourceness is the base of any application focusing itself on security and possibly privacy, thanks for the answer though!

    VoIP server part of Signal is not open source.
  • 0
    @SystemZ The entire server isn't but even if that'd get compromised, good luck breaking the end to end crypto!

    What is signal😦😦😦and why have you uninstalled whatsapp
  • 0
    @pihu signal is a secure messaging app, the OP has said why they uninstalled whatsapp
  • 1
    Is signal better than whatsapp@ScribeOfGoD
  • 0
    @pihu that's personal preference
  • 1
    @pihu it's more secure and not backed by facebook

    @duckifier or use peer reviewed things, or make your own..... some people care about privacy, like actual privacy... That's why it's called a private life, let them live

    @linuxxx That's a stupid comment and you know it. I had even forgotten about this post since I closed the app a few days ago; hence it holding 0 value to me. Why should I care at all about someone I don't give 2 shits about quitting social media?
  • 2
    @Fexell I don't find that a stupid comment but feel free to do so. If I personally find something irrelevant (or something like that) I either ignore it or down vote it as not for me.
    So no, I don't 'know it'.

    @pihu WhatsApp is owned by facebook, a company which gets as much data as possible from its users in order to sell that (profiles of it)
    Next to that they're integrated in prism, the biggest mass surveillance network ever created so yeah quitting it would make perfect sense.

    @duckifier I wouldn't call the custom crypto/default non end to end crypto/metadata storage 'not secure enough', I'd call it fucking insecure!
  • 1
    Oh😲😲😲@linuxxx
  • 0
    @duckifier Yeah but that one uses the broken mtproto crypto protocol 🤢

    They are not sold anymore (and have been terrible), with little luck you can find a used one

    @duckifier Telegram. I'd rather use a horribly insecure messenger than anything from Facebook.
  • 0
    @duckifier That. But yeah, if I'd have to use telegram with multiple people, I'd stop doing im chatting. Rather no chats than using that horrible thing (one person I'll manage)

    @duckifier I use it on my work phone too but it's not getting on my personal phone, nope. It's up to an individual as for how far they want to go/what works for them. I lost some nice contacts when I dropped WhatsApp for personal use but fuck it, at least I'm out of Facebook's hands with my personal phone.
