So I am in a dilemma right now... I have like two lifes right now: One the one side I am a student in applied computer science and on the other side I am already working in a Dev company and as a freelancer. Compared to my work, university is boring as hell. I would love to just skip university and start my own company with my other freelancer friend! We already have some clients so we would have a good start. But many people, like my parents for example, told me that need at least degree to achieve something in life. I told them that I would try do earn some certificates (like Cisco) but they are still not happy with this idea. So I would love to hear your opinion guys... Do you think that a degree is absolutely necessary? Thanks in advance!

I guess certifications would be way better than a degree, but if you are in the last year of your uni, I would suggest to complete the degree. It would add a completed education mark, which is always better.

@rockford5281 right now I am in my second semester on this University. I studied computer science on an other university before I changed to applied computer science. My biggest problem with university is that there is so much unnecessary stuff to learn (in my opinion)... Often times I sit in one of my courses and either know everything already from experience or just don't understand anything because it is so theoretical that the prof can't even give a use-case. Sure, some of those "unnecessary things" may become quite important at one point in my life, but I don't think that anybody would remember everything they learned 20 years ago for example.
Oh and thanks for your answer! :D

@daCoda even I am in my second year of university, they teach a lot of unnecessary stuff too.

But having a college degree adds a permanent qualification, certifications don't count as your educational qualifications, but as extra achievements.

I would suggest you to keep a balance between your university and other stuff, there are a lot of people looking for a job in the same field, and as @jpat mentioned, a college degree increases the chances of securing a job and higher pay. But if you want to do something of your own, then having a degree is beneficial as your clients who have no idea about programming might not get how important your projects are, and they might believe that you are eligible because of your degree.

Sorry for a long comment. Good Luck!
