Who the fuck invented these thick USB drives, I can't put anything else in there

Please don't laugh at my i3 core, I am aware that it is pretty sad

@Floydian That's another way to put it, but I know smaller USBs exist
  • 8
@Floydian That's a common issue on laptops, most have at least two USB ports side by side with just a small gap between

@DefiniteGoose Get a smaller USB drive :-) Seems to be an older type anyway, most current drives are not that wide.

Or use another USB port if there are any on another side of the laptop.

@DefiniteGoose i would say that an i3 is plenty for most stuffπŸ˜‹
  • 7
@ddephor The USB is not mine, I was asked to transfer some photos from a disc to the USB I was given

Thank goodness for USB extension cables.

Excellent point though about port placements.

FX [ Makes note not to do same mistake with any products he develops.. ]

@millido unless you want to watch 1080p YouTube videos. My laptop chokes even when I think of it...
  • 13
@DefiniteGoose laugh at your i3? I'm still using Core2 Quad
  • 6
I have a similar problem. Had to trim down my vga so i could plug both vga and hdmi into my laptop.
  • 13
@Floydian Or get to the workshop, strip the case from the drive and make one by yourself with the right dimensions πŸ”¨

I have done that with two drives a few weeks ago because I was sick of the cheap plastic look. And I think it turned out really nice (wood from an old apple tree)

    And then this happens
    (Same usb drive btw)

@ddephor I have two right hands, so that's gonna be difficult, seeing as I am left-handed

    @LrdShaper

I had to use a W95 486 laptop the other day, as it was the only thing here with a working OS and a RS232 port !

To talk to a modern thing that whilst it had a USB port and an ethernet port, could only be configured via RS232 to get those working..

    @DefiniteGoose It's not that difficult.
    And really recreational.

@olback No issues with 1080p on my celeron laptop (haswell). As long as it's not 60fps.

Producing those things in smaller probably costs more money. Having more space between the usb ports would require more space and maybe cost more money and both manufacturers haven't been kicked into their nuts enough to understand why it matters.
  • 4
That's what she said. πŸ˜‚ Sorry. Couldn't resist.

An I3 is like a snail with a Bazooka, useless on its own but a killer with the right hardware...

    What is a USB drive?

Is it like an offline local file repository?
  • 6
    STOP! Hammer Time...
  • 2
    That’s what she said

    > Having more space between
    > the usb ports would require
    > more space

Not necessarily, there is enough real estate around the edge of a laptop that isn't used to put them elsewhere.

I'm reminded of the Atari ST that I'm guessing during some design process said lets add the mouse/joystick ports here because its cheap to do so..

    https://images.pcworld.com/news/...

So they put them underneath the keyboard !

Later on, they would add some to the side, which is rather easier to get to:

    http://i1.wp.com/www.azog.org/...

As such, I think for a very small increase in cost, you could increase the gap between ports, or even relocate them someplace not directly connected to the motherboard.

It could be one of those things that make your laptop stand out in the market of crowded laptop designs..

Kinda like I'm planning to design doors differently on vehicles, so they don't catch the wind, they slide, not hinge!

    Dremel!
    Problem solved permanently.

Drive thicker than a bowl of oatmeal
  • 7
@DefiniteGoose You thought the i3 was bad? Yes. This is my main computer 😭

    @coder67 @DefiniteGoose fight me

    to save space ig lmao

@Zerocchi @DefiniteGoose I guess we can live in the under-speced life together 🀣

@Floydian For sale? No, I just like working with wood and it was just a pastime to pimp ugly USB drives.

What do you mean with reusable? The drive works, it's just the stripped electronics put into a piece of wood and and some acrylic glass to see the LED.
Or reusable with another drive? Then no, it's glued together, only separable by destroying it.

@Floydian I'm struggling with myself to buy me a CNC wood router just for fun.

Maybe I should start mass production when I convinced myself that I really need such a thing 😎
  • 3
Such a pain, same thing with 3G dongles..
  • 1
You can get 3D printed wood these days, in various amounts of wood content.
  • 2
@Nanos I had to use an android to vnc into a Windows 7 machine, to rdc into a Windows business server to access a hardware firewall because somebody changed settings to lock everything else out...

Its also bad design of the laptop, pure karma
  • 2
@karma It's called a birthday present. Buying my own stuff from now on
  • 0
    @DefiniteGoose haha true
  • 2
Yep, my previous laptop had this problem.

    T H I C C
  • 1
@DefiniteGoose I was just going to do that
  • 1
And why TF do you have an i3??

JK, I have an i3 too, so it's okay to joke around. They are super slow, smh.

@willard True, I'm in a dire need of a new rig
