Time to market is often more important that code quality. Doing something first will often get you more money than doing something better.

it feels that they are going fast, but as time goes the cost of implementing new features goes up, and the thing might collapse on its own weight

Code quality depends on perspective and point of observation. If it does what it should be it's enough in a startup.

@NoNameCode agreed, once a company with quick code makes it to market, they need to make it a priority to solve technical debt, or they'll end up implementing features a lot slower than their competition.

I've seen this especially come true with testing. It's great if you can implement new features in a couple of days- skipping tests- to build an MVP and gain traction, but you can only do it for so long. The demand for faster iteration cycles will keep increasing. The longer you push the "refactor" the harder it will get. Untested code is not good code.
