So javascript is used to create websites, desktop apps, games... Wonder when operating systems will start be developed in javascript...

There literally is a js os

    Just why???

@gintko there also is a justin bieber os and hannah montana os

But those are just debian or ubuntu with custom themes. The javascript-os(es) are on a whole different level of frankensteinism

Just wait till some hipster js dev inside San Francisco drinking his expensive coffee says "yeah, I should make an OS with Javascript!" and litterally does it because "I only program with languages and libraries that normies wouldn't understand."

Wake up. You were asleep long enough, the era has changed now os can be built using js

@py2js my point exactly about all this javascript crazyness, using it for everything, I mean you can write OS with PHP too, but should you?

    JavaScript PowerPoint, for the olds.

Let me talk from a js dev perspective.

NodeOS a js focused OS only has JS in userland basically UI and NPM for package management and some build in packages for general software (editor calculator etc.) But under the hood it uses C/C++ it is not even slow.

Now we come to why people love using nodeJS to do things: It gets the job done, It is multi platform and does this with sufficent speed since behind the JIT is C/C++... again.

Most games use JS for scripting interfaces etc before they used LUA or some custom tailored undocumented language which is much worse. But tbh my game engine uses C# similar to how Unity does it.

And as you may guessed you can and should write node_modules in native languages, so that heavy computition and scripting are seperated.

Also no i am not some hipster somewhere in san francisco and also no wanker from san diego. Im not even located in the US.

That beeing said only ~ 1% of JS devs actually know that thats why nodejs enviroment still sucks

Can't you write raspberry functionality with node? Not really an OS but still IoT and comp engineering.

Just give in to javascript. Join the dark side >:)

JavaScript is used for so many things it's not designed for, it hurts me physically

@irene woah there. That's like saying all scripting language "communities" are bad. JS offers a huge range of possibilities, like any other scripting language... Why the hate though?
  • 0
@irene that's a good point though. The popularity hurts itself, still has its use

    Technically it's called ECMAScript... 😝

I personally dislike the idea of putting the processing load on the user, rather than working to make your web application faster and more efficient. Instead we're moving in the opposite direction, away from efficiency, and js is driving the bus.

@bahua Talking about that, I hope webassembly together with kotlin native will be a game changer, but let’s wait and see
  • 2
I'm waiting for the moment when somebody writes an OS in NodeJS and another one writes a NodeJS engine to work in this NodeJS-based OS.

Js and OS... nope. Fuck that idea.
  • 0
@irene because maybe.. They are! Maybe not encrypting your hard drive but mining

I feel like it’s fucking bad idea! Js is perfect for the web. Pwa are fine if it doesn’t require high access to the machine, and that stuff. But an os is the fucking idiot! Js is not made to be blazing fast! It’s not made to be close to hardware! It’s made to be the most away from hardware possible in its conception, to be able run everywhere! Use fucking proper languages and don’t try to be lazy and reuse a fucking misused language because it’s popular
