MY SERVER JUST DECIDED TO RESTART TO DO WINDOWS UPDATES!!!

Yesterday evening I stayed up late to install some critical updates manually as I obviously have auto updates disabled.
I didn't quite get everything done so I wanted to continue the next evening when noone was using the server.
Apparently that removed the rule to never ever restart automatically...

I have my damn router and app server running in a VM on there!!!

I'm sure you'll think about it next time, but yes, Windows update have a tendency of (re)enabling all of the automatic update features.

It's the ancient gods that are punishing you for spending 500$ on a Windows Server License. If the server you're hosting doesn't NEED to be hosted on Windows, consider changing to a Linux.

This happened at a previous job all the time. You’d remote onto the box and server manager would pop up, screaming, snivelling and offering to sacrifice its first born so it could restart to update.

    We always ignored it.

Probably not terribly smart, but taking down the live system to do an update was a no no, and nobody was going to stay late and restart the damn thing in case it exploded πŸ˜‚
