@Condor funnier is when the install doesn't prompt for a password anymore and mysql_secure_install indeed doesn't set the password anymore either

@Condor tbh all this bullshit started only "recently" since in the past mysql_secure_install worked, you were prompted for a passaord during installation etc. only now somebody decided to just fuck it all
I fucking LOVEEEEE that there's atleast 50 different ways to set the mysql root password, depending on what weather, what time and what version you're lucky to fetch from the repos.
