    @RantSomeWhere They take search results from other search engines, not a secret haha

    @linuxxx duh, but yandex? I didn’t know they used yandex as a source. It kinda contradicts their philosophy

    @linuxxx yeah but that icon

    @RantSomeWhere What's wrong with specifically yandex?

    @linuxxx Storing users info maybe ????

    @linuxxx from a privacy standpoint, Yandex is a nightmare. I’d personally not trust Yandex with my data.
    They’re Russian. Russia is a state that’s known for spying on people and mass surveillance (cough). There’s no real law in Russia that regulates what companies should do with user data, so it’s just as likely that they sell their data to the government. Some even go as far and say that Yandex is a mass surveillance tool developed and funded by the government, although that rumor is a bit too illuminati for me.
    (Note: I’m Ukrainian and might be heavily biased.) But yeah, that’s the gist of it. And that’s why i didn’t expect DDG, a free, independent and privacy-respecting search engine to use Yandex as a source

    @RantSomeWhere does yandex know that it was you who searched for it or does ddg act as a Proxy?
  • 1
    @hypervtechnics nope, I don’t think so. But that doesn’t change the fact that using Yandex as a source contradicts DDGs philosophy
    Edit: misread your question, sorry. DDG acts like a proxy.

    @RantSomeWhere Tbh I'm quite sceptical about the Russian stuff. And that's my countries politics fault :/

    @RantSomeWhere It's like, often without any proof they try to pin everything possible on Russia. It's literally getting old/annoying.

    The ddos attacks on tweakers.net proved this exact point a while ago.

    I believe what you're saying by the way!

    @linuxxx welp, it only makes sense to pin it to Russia. They’re an intransparent state whose government does whatever they want because everyone’s afraid of them, with a criminal and a liar as head of state.
    I’m not saying that Yandex collects data and sells it to Russia. I’m saying that they can’t be trusted because we don’t know what they do.

    Edit: btw about your countries politics, wasn’t it your research team that confirmed who shot down the plane over eastern Ukraine? Last I heard the Dutch government wanted to formally blame the Russian government, to which Putin replied: “an airplane? I don’t remember anything like that. We haven’t shot down anything. What plane are you even talking about?” ;)

    @RantSomeWhere Replace the following words and you get an officially true comment:
    "Yandex" => "Google"
    "Russia" => "USA"
    I don't know if or what Yandex shares with the Russian government or other companies, but it's a fact the Google shares user data with the NSA. I hope you're at least as concerned about this fact as about your claim about Yandex 😉

    @PonySlaystation well yeah. Yandex is in fact the Russian equivalent of Google. Not only because they're a search engine

    I think forever
  • 3
    @RantSomeWhere ya. That's why, if you want your site to show up on ddg, you have to get Yandex to index it.
  • 2
    @RantSomeWhere Well we had this case were a few banking sites + tweakers got attacked for days and the politicians started pointing towards Russia without any proof.

    Everyone went along and when they caught the culprit (teenage guy from a small Dutch village) they asked why he did it: well, they'll probs point to Russia anyways and I found that funny and tried to prove that point.

    He proved that point well :/
