Then don't use Windows, there are telemetry-free open-source alternatives, which nowadays are comparable in the amount of software available in comparison to Windows.

I find it overwhelmingly interesting that they want all our data yet are concerned about mass surveillance.

I love the world we live in, it’s full of hypocrisy 😎

@FilipeRamalho TELL THAT TO FUCKING NVIDIA!
Besides, I'm using Linux for years already to the point where I can compile my own goddamn kernels and even spin up my own fucking distribution. If I was able to migrate this host to Linux, I would've done so years ago. So please fuck off with that "sWiTch tO LenOx" bullshit! I'm fucking sick of it! If that's what makes the likes of @dontbeevil hate us Linux evangelists because people mindlessly spout their Linuxovah Witness preach regardless of fucking context, fucking hell I kind of agree with even the strongest Microshaft fanboy out here in that regard. FUCK THIS MINDLESS LINUXOVAH PREACHING!

@Condor Then use Windows just for Gaming for which the dark mode and insider isn't relevant. And if it's because NVIDIA breaks Linux even when non-gaming, then you really should change the graphics card or you just wait until the 18/10 Update comes out
  • 8
@FilipeRamalho Are you going to desolder it for me and replace it and the motherboard itself? Because this isn't a machine where you can just swap it out. Dystopia entered even at the hardware level already.
I'll say it once again. If I would be able to (and I can compile kernels, I can spin my own distros, and I can solder) I would have done so long ago. This PC doesn't allow me to. I don't have datasheets, this PC isn't made to support other GPU's and Acer didn't make this thing to be very serviceable. Hence why I'm running Windows on this thing against my will.

I wonder how many more rants it'll take before people finally start to understand this.

@AlpineLinnix I personally have no problem with full telemetry in the insiders, but I think Microsoft should make it possible to go to zero telemetry in a easy way even for home customers.
  • 1
@Condor Then don't use Insider, it's not to peak and look into features, but to test software and report bugs, that's why full telemetry is needed
  • 6
@FilipeRamalho you aren't going to tell me that multiple requests to Microsoft per second about detailed app usage, CPU usage and everything (e.g. Microsoft knows that I use devRant UWP now, that I'm using the keyboard, how long I do so and how long this window retained focus) is just "general data collection for troubleshooting purposes". That data is in no way related to stability or general usage. That's eerily specific, especially due to the fact that it's linked to my account specifically. Enable Diagnostic Data Viewer in the Settings, install the app and see for yourself. Full data reporting is NOT just standard anonymous logs for troubleshooting. It's full-blown telemetry about specific users and their habits.

@Condor I looked into some of them, searched in the bar for my name, msa and other ways they could identify and found nothing. And as I said don't use Insiders, your PC will still be running you just have to wait some months to get the features.
  • 5
@FilipeRamalho At least in Insiders you have to link to your Microsoft account and it reports tons of stuff like aforementioned stuff, window switch, app interactivity, lots of other things, all neatly in small API requests. The data phoned home doesn't contain your name, but the Microsoft account that it's uploaded as does. I feel stupid for even having to explain this.
  • 4
As for "don't use Insiders", when will they roll out the Windows Explorer dark theme to the regular customer / product base?
  • 1
@Condor It is uploaded without identification. Still it probably can identifided, but I still have no problem with that, because I know I'm giving them this data and wasn't forced to do so.

In November with the next feature update.
  • 4
I ended up resetting the bloody thing. I guess that reconfiguration will take less time than trying to figure out what the fuck went wrong in this featureful shit OS. Please suggest me alternative explorers with dark themes because I am not going to sacrifice my privacy for a stupid theme again.

@FilipeRamalho "I have nothing to hide" essentially. If you ever wanted to, would you be able to turn off telemetry in Windows 10 and not have to deal with artificially induced breakage?
  • 1
@Condor Currently not, I personally would love to see a zero telemetry option, because Microsoft should also embrace total privacy, but I can live the fact it's currently not the case. In privacy I'm always pro-choice.

I have no experience in Windows dark file explorer so I can't recommend anything, in current status it's anyway still has a strange design. In November it will ship to everyone
  • 4
@FilipeRamalho chances are that they never will though. Providing a free OS under the buzzword Windows as a Service (WaaS) and data collection it's become. I'd love to see an option where I can purchase an OS from them and be allowed to disable all tracking, similar to how I pay for all the software that I frequently use on Android as well.

Cold hard truth is that Microsoft is a data-, ad-driven company now. For some reason they aren't showing me ads anymore. Perhaps they're taking my data and selling that instead.. I wouldn't be surprised by it. It's even got to the point where I've detached the Ethernet cable of that host now just so that it wouldn't be able to phone home during reset. And I've already removed the (otherwise useful) camera and microphone module during a major cleanup of the machine's internals. This shouldn't have to be done. I shouldn't have to be afraid of my OS spying on me. I shouldn't have to remove functionality just because my OS abuses it. I shouldn't be forced to run some OS just because GPU vendor is an asshole like that.

I hate the current status quo in technology. Desperately fighting for privacy, but it's a lost battle. Privacy is increasingly being eroded, and that's further accelerated by this idea of "I have nothing to hide".

@linuxxx plz halp :'( I lost my will to those Shaftfuckers T_T

@Condor When you want full privacy I fully agree with you. As said I personally think I have nothing to hide, but some think that and still want full privacy and I think that my mentality shouldn't block that.
  • 6
@FilipeRamalho Would you disclose details about your habits and social circles with a random stranger on the internet such as me, under the guise of "I'm using it to improve your experience"?

In practical terms, let's say that hypothetically I provide you a devRant client that does everything you want to, but collects all your Android activity while installed.

(to be clear I do intend to create a custom client for tablets but the data collection part won't be part of it, this is purely hypothetical and the app will be open source as per devRant policy)

Anyway, let's say that my super useful app that you can't miss in your daily devRant usage participates in these shady practices. Would you use it, provided that it allows me to learn everything about you? That issue is hypothetical in this aforementioned devRant app, but is very much reality in Windows 7 to 10.
  • 0
@Condor If I know and find enough substantial evidence you have a profile with my data and on top you sell it I wouldn't support that. And no that isn't reality in Window 7 to 10.

Let me say this again "I'M PRO CHOICE ON PRIVACY" I totally understand you and also want a zero telemetry option.

Oh god i hate the data collection these days. Why does everything abd everyone wants to know my most private things? It's private for a reason.
As for Nvidia and your setup; i've read multiple rants from you about this though i can't figure out what type of machine it is. May you enlighten me?

@KittyMeowstika it's an Acer Aspire ZC-700 that I bought back in 2015.. an AIO computer with laptop hardware and dual GPU's. It's a terrible choice I've made.. €600 I've paid for this shit, with which I could've totally built my own ATX desktop and get even some better hardware. Even my buddies on IRC recommended to go with a custom build instead.. but I didn't listen. I really was an idiot for buying this crap.

@FilipeRamalho @Condor if you have nothing to hide, please send me all your accounts with usernames and passwords (including bank account).
  • 2
@linuxxx thats also my go to response if someone's saying he's got nothing to hide
  • 2
@KittyMeowstika Awesome! Because the word ‘nothing’ means nothing.
