Freelancers, how many hours would you charge your client per small projects?

Situation is that I am leaving country but will still work as a freelancer android dev in my company at hourly rate 27EUR/hour.

Now from experience I already feel that most specifications of tasks/ux-ui sketches will be not clear/vague. Also there is a question of overall app architecture, prevention from crashes, memory leaks and etc.

Basically they will give me some spec and I will have to evaluate how long it will take to do it. I never worked as a freelancer so I need some advice on how to deal with problems like this. If I guess that something might take 5 working days to be done (40h) should I charge for 60h and etc.?

in general, i propose my honest estimations and then add some cost contingency to the total, normally something around 25% explicitly.

at the end of the project i just decide how much to charge in total, but if the client is a good one that didn't make me waste more time than actually needed, and i've been able to deliver within the first estimation, i tend to cut the additional stuff.

the important thing is to establish a threshold of possible overcharge and keep communication always flowing.

I charge the number of hours it takes, i never do fixed price, that way the client can change scope and direction of the project as they see fit and deliveries are made continiously. (Atleast to a staging environment so that the client can see progress and give feedback).

With fixed price projects you need to waste tons of time just to clarify what will be delivered and then argue with the client whenever they start claiming that <missing feature x which was never in the scope> is a "bug" that you must fix.

@ItsNotMyFault what do you do with big projects? You ask for any money upfront?

I tend to do fixed prices with a signed functional design by all parties involved. And then charge 50% upfront for any project above 1000 euros.

Any changes later are then by a fixed hourly rate higher then the one used for the fixed prize calculations.

@MisterArie that is actually so smart! Thanks for sharing

@zemaitis and if the later changes are to much I start a new project with the client with the same method.

In my experience it's easier for my clients and me if everything is set in stone.

I still have some clients that sign but not read. But well I can then get the documentation and say this is what you agreed on.

@MisterArie i mostly do big projects, I invoice monthly, if payment late i stop working and sell the invoice to a collection agency. (Who will push for bankrupcy if they don't get their money)
