@abhishekb no , because an Idea can change ur life but eclipse only can change tide 😅

Never worked with either (tried them but never actually used them) but I love netbeans anyways.

@linuxxx netbeans is good but u should try working on either eclipse or IDEA

Nothing rules a well configured vim (derivate)

@RantSomeWhere yeah it sucks that people want to make a living :^)

@musician ubuntu is open source and canonical makes tons of money with it.
  • 1
@RantSomeWhere those two are unrelated though, something can be opensource and paid.
  • 1
@RantSomeWhere nope, they offer binaries and service for a one time fee. Ideal for companies and consumer that dont know much about computers.
  • 2
@RantSomeWhere would be great if people stopped discussing about false facts since IDEA community version is open source...

Have you ever *used* Jetbrains products?
Absolutely amazing. Intellisense marks anything deprecated or wrong. Amazing autocomplete. Native VCS support.
    And much more.

    It is, just is.

Intellij is a bliss, nearly using for a year and still amazes me with unknown features when i need them(especially with spring).

And make sure to install the Key Promoter X plug-in, that one's a lifesaver!

Both of them are inferior to vim though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I use to love intellij because it was so much better than eclipse, but it's been really obnoxious lately. It is constantly indexing shit I don't want it to, so I spend lots of time omitting directories and types, and you can have them omitted at the project level but then it just *hides* the folder. Aaaaaaaaargh

I want to code, not work on tools. I love the JetBrain guys, but this is becoming obtuse.

aaaaaaaaargh VS Code is kind of WAY better for most work and *free* so, it's kinda no competition

@PrivateGER I dint use it , but will try

    @jAsE That's the spirit. :)

@musician It's not about the money, it's about the freedom you get with open source software.

I would pay for netbeans just like this (will start to donate to foss projects soon) as long as it stays open source.

That's not just a principle thing but also a security and privacy one. Because laws exist which require companies to build in back doors at government request and with closed source software you can't check for anything including backdoors or vulnerabilities.

@PrivateGER Yes I've used them and quit using them as well, on purpose.

@sSam I also rather use products from devs who make them open source than devs or companies which develop closed source software.

And again, it's not about the money for me.

@linuxxx out of curiosity: who actually truly checks code for backdoors in big open source programs?

Also intellij community edition is free and open source
  • 1
@linuxxx what? I said intellij is open source?
  • 0
@musician I don't yet as i am very busy and have loads of side projects next to working full-time but I have some friends who do :)

But in general there are definitely people who do it. But using that as an argument as for why something should be open source or not is bad imo.

@musician @sSam As for the open source part with intellij, read my comment before this one. If you don't agree that's entirely fine but it's a valid one for me.

@linuxxx you mean the free as in freedom one? I still don't get why intellij can't offer you privacy and security when it's open source?

    @RantSomeWhere
    1. Comnunity version is 100% open source and it has all basic functionality you need. Ultimate adds additional support for frameworks like Spring, Java EE.

    2. What does it even matter what company is behind the product, VS Code is open source and cool so I don't care that MS created it, I care only about the product. Some companies are huge and have different people on different products with different goals. I'm not gonna blame all germans for holocaust, just blame the hitler folks...
