Micromanagement SUCKS. I don't know why people think it's the best way to do things.

It's because they don't trust employees to manage themselves. Usually because the manager has problems how to delegate. Or because the employees lack self-driven initiative.

I circumvent this by just having short informal and friendly status talks with PM and boss to make sure we are all on the same page. They know what I'm doing and where I am so that they don't feel the need to interfere.

Fun story, I had to do holiday replacement in another project, and that PM was totally surprised when unexpected things came up and I just dropped him an email with "I'll take care of that", and finally "done". He quite surprised not to have to manage stuff and actually enjoyed that working style.
