@bkwilliams in professional companies, people have already understood that the long term damage of the "brilliant jerk" is devastating even is he/she is one of the mythical 10x programmers.
Even if one of my co-workers who ought to know better did something really stupid, there is no way I could unleash even half of a Torvalds, let alone do that for the whole world as audience. -
@cursee I don't know him as a person, but his top rants would be more than enough to get fired for sure.
Even when the boss has a beef with some employee who seriously messed up, it's a no-go to completely tear him down in front of the whole team. Instead, that will be a serious talk in boss' office between them two, and maybe afterwards a general lecture for the whole team to make sure nobody else messes up again. -
Ellis16136yIs anywhere safe from this crap? From drama? No. From idealogues butting heads? FUCK NO.
From oppertunists (intentional or not) hoping to take charge? FUCK-CHRIST NO!
There's a lot of behind the scenes shit that makes it tricky to judge if stuff like this is backstabbing or justified. We'll need to wait and see. -
cursee165956y@Fast-Nop hmm from my knowledge, late Jobs did things worse than those and he got worshippers. (´・_・`)

Condor323326yThat archive.fo seems to have errors all over the place.. Routing resolution errors here, SSL cipher mismatch errors there, DNS resolution errors somewhere else... Meh.
Either way Linus Torvalds - while I really do like the guy - was always kind of a dick. I think that being a dick is fine, but many people don't really like that part of him. They just put up with it and tried to live with it. Maybe taking some time off isn't a bad idea. -
Condor323326y@norman70688 Looks like it. Having Asperger syndrome myself, coping with people's emotions is something quite difficult.. not sure why, but there just don't seem to be the sensors for it... Sociopathic almost.
-
@Condor I guess you still can bring across technical points in your company without using swearing and four letter words in official emails or meetings.
-
Condor323326y@Fast-Nop Most certainly. I think that that's a bad trait of Torvalds. That said, the Linux community isn't really a company, is it? There's no business relationships to speak of. The lack of financial ropes does give quite some freedom. I experience that with the (junk) messages to our Facebook Pages all the time. They ask how to hack online accounts like Facebook, Gmail or whatever.. I tell them to fuck right off. And because they aren't clients or whatever, there's no repercussion for that really. It'd even be considered beneficial because it drives out the idiots from the page. Maybe Torvalds thinks in a similar way.
I'm not trying to justify his behavior, I'm just playing advocate of the devil essentially.. and that's how I'd think too, when someone that I frankly don't care about contacts me. -
@Condor actually, it is. 90% of the kernel devs are paid guns and work at some company. The times of hobby hackers are long gone.
Nobody wants a job where a mistake can make him ridiculed and humiliated for the whole world to see, and he can't even retaliate because he also represents his company and would get fired.
That's a big reason why the Linux kernel has enough contributors, but they submit and dive away instead of growing to become maintainers.
Looks like Linux is going the way of Python.

And Linus is probably being pushed out.
