I am so sad. I've been having problems with Linux installs on my desktop since i built it. It just hangs at random times and the journals don't mention any problems. I finally catch a lead and it turns out it's a bug with the microcode of the Ryzen processors. There was a possible work around, but it didn't work for me.

Guess I'm just going to have to use Windows exclusively on my desktop. I hope for a fix but the bug has been around for a year. :(

New hardware can be quite finicky in Linux, especially when you run more "stable" (read: old) distributions like Ubuntu or Debian. What kernel are you running? If my limited memory (I don't use Ryzen) serves me right, it only got introduced somewhere in 4.10 or so, and even Ubuntu 18.04 seems to have gone with only 4.9 LTS. The current latest is 4.18.10, and 4.19 is also already in rc5 (so almost ready for stable release).. so yeah.

@Condor I tried a few flavors. Arch, Manjaro, Antergos, Ubuntu, Elementary, and Deepin. All had the seemingly random bug.

@lights-a5 hmm, if the Arch kernel still has it, it may be an issue in the upstream kernel as well. Maybe consider filing a bug report, although kernel maintainers will most likely want you to run the upstream kernel i.e. compile your own from their latest source. In Arch it's a fairly straightforward process.

@Condor the issue is something with the microcode. I found the issue reported here https://community.amd.com/thread/...

I tried the workaround mentioned later, but it still happened. I'm gonna try using the python program mentioned to check a couple things.
