We are working with Windows server on our Application software class. This is the saddest moment in past few months. I proudly switched to a Linux and now I need to install this shitdows (only on KVM but still) ... Luckily we have sane teacher and we have to use shitdows just because he wants to teach us why we don't want to use WS 😂

That's almost like the setup I'm planning instead of migrating from 7 to 10 (I need Windoze for games, so it'll be KVM with GPU passthrough, but if M$ fucks up once again, only the VM is dead, saving my prescious home dir).

Why you don't just use an older windows like 8.1 ?
Licenses should be pretty cheap nowadays.
It works pretty well in my dual-boot setup.

@metamourge I probably will put several versions of Windy OS onto several VMs (I like old video games, so 98/95/3.1 are a must), but Win10 for my GameDev efforts and current titles...

Besides, I hate Win8 even more than Win10. 8 made me consider switching to Linux again (I went from XP to Vista to Linux, then from Linux back to 7 when I got a seperate "work" computer).

Nowadays, gaming on Linux with KVM VGA passthrough for non-Linux games seems more attractive than having a Windoze Pre-Alpha RC Indev 0.0.0.10 that just bulldozes the entire PC during an update. It's about limiting potential damage from an OS that's on the verge of becoming more dangerous than ransomware.

Windows servers are still very used; like half of deployments of our product run on Windows Server. Powershell scripting is very much in demand; MS SQL is also quite popular... While I prefer Linux as well, and I use exclusively Unix (Linux at work, OS X at home), MS Server is a very good investment in future. Also, concepts like networking translate 1:1 regardless of the OS.

I would never recommend anyone to run prod on non-open-source SW. At the same time, you can earn big buck by knowing your MS SW.

@sergiolarosa89 The enterprise-level stuff from M$ isn't that bad, but the retail / customer stuff is getting worse every version - more lock-in than most prisons, more digital handcuffs than a bondage website and "security" features that merely shift liability to the customer.

Yeah, they get more and more professional with the stuff aimed at professionals. But that's it, the personal customer's still the doormat, and most are just happy to play this role.
