ltlian21886yNorway here. I'll convert to usd for reference.
I have a loan at about $60k, but I only spent about half of it and the other half is in a savings account. Some of it got converted to grant.
It was definitely scary watching it grow and then wondering if I'd even find a job after my studies. I got a job before finishing my bachelor's and won't have any trouble paying it back as things are now.
We have it pretty cushy with university education being free here. I didn't have many expenses beyond rent and food. -
baewulf16556y@MrQuaker I’m in BC, I pay 3K per term but I went to a private uni before I started CS and got a shittonne of student loans, worst decision of my life

@wholl0p Well in Germany you also have to pay for food and home so we have Bafög for which you get at max 735€ per month (soon 850€) and only have to pay back at max. 10000€ for both bachelor and master or half of what you got payed. Oh if you have financial difficulties you can start paying a few years later.

Snob20866y@FilipeRamalho sure but food, transport and a home has to be paid everywhere else too.. Maybe some costs may be included in the high prices paid e.g. in the US, but the education itself is free.
-
@wholl0p You are right and transport is in most universities included in Germany through the Semesterbeitrag.

Snob20866y@FilipeRamalho Unfortunately not everywhere... It is indeed cheaper but not fully included (at least where I come from) :-(

Brolls31156yUK here.
Last I checked my loan had about 11k sat in it, ours are payed automatically out of salary via the same mechanism income tax is collected.
Now, it requires employers to declare and set it up, and my last couple didn’t do so properly, so no payments.
I now work via my own company, and I fall under the necessary thresholds to pay it currently, so it’s just sat there.
Ours don’t collect interest (beyond inflation at least anyway), and they’re automatically written off once you hit 60 or something I think.
They kind of just sit there until you pay them or you don’t, it’s a huge ticking time bomb for the government 😂
@devs with sizeable student loans:
How are you finding paying back your loans? Is it super tight? Not at all? How long are you/have you taken to repay?
I know this will be different for everybody but I’m interested in seeing a variety of answers!
