while15286y@Joni4Games no clue, it worked great for 8 years and then suddenly it started being suicidal

dejaime3446yoh my, seems we have a serial killer on the loose. I lost 3 HDDs in a single week once, two of them were old pieces with 10+y, so I didn't really think much of it. But when I installed the third, a brand new one, and it died, I figured it was something else killing them. Turns out it was a faulty power supply.

while15286y@dejaime huh that's kinda makes sense. Wouldn't it try to kill my other components as well tho?
I did use to get BSOD relatively frequently, but only when I leave the PC unattended for a while, don't know if it's related. -
@while
Why your psu dosent kill components other than hdds? Because Hdds, fans, motherboard use different rails and different voltage regulators. In your voltage supply you have few rails: 0V(ground),-3.3V, +5V, +12V, -5V, sometimes -12V. If im not mistaken motherboard uses mostly 12V while hdds and ssds use 5V.
Everything depends on amount of filtering and quality of the voltage regulators. On motherboard you have the best quality regulators for cpu because it is super delicate. In hdds and ssd you ususly dont have the space. In hhds motor controler usualy dies and in ssds usualy tantalum caps die (or the controler)
Those are my assumptions.
@Condor If you wanna check that opinion with your experience i would be pleased -
while15286y@Gregozor2121 correct me if I'm wrong but don't desktop hdds also use 12V?
@Nanos That sadly I do not know. It could be that's the case, I just never checked the temperatures of my storage
@Parzi doubt it, but possible. I think that I switched the branch cause I suspected something like that, but for the life of me I can't be sure.
