urgghhh this old laptop doesn't have a working shift key

also it's sticky. eeeeee

thankfully there's 2 shift keys but talk about awkward

just gotta dump ssh on it and find out if it can run rust or not. God this thing is slow. was top of the line 10 years ago when this business guy bought the best laptop he could find, now somehow barely runs arch. crazy

@jestdotty did you not upvote me again because I'm black?

@jestdotty I have also yellow walls and just pretend it's a vacation residence where many people would like to live. (for few months a year :p)

@whimsical hmmm I upvote what feels good (like funny, insightful) or is correct I think natively

Hmm, that's weird... I have an old laptop from 2014(so 11 years ago) which was pretty mid at the time, and it runs linux without issue, and is not slow at all.
Maybe there's a hardware issue in your laptop or some other problem?

(I've replaced the HDD in it for an SSD, but I assume a 10 yo high end laptop would have an SSD)

@SoldierOfCode I think it has its original HDDs and they're probably dying. there's 2 of them. I did test the second one. I saw one was being 15% utilized last night and then ssh died and I wasn't doing anything

@SoldierOfCode same for me, I'm running a x270. For weeks I'm looking for alternative and can't find. Maybe, soon, I'll but my fourth x270 in new condition.

@jestdotty oh, normal hdd is really not doable anymore. But you have ssds from 25,- these days.

    didn't test*

@whimsical urgh money. if money I may as well get a raspberry pi. or some kind of tiny box as a server on purpose for sshing into. I don't need any of the other fancy shtuff
  • 2
@jestdotty cute that you think a raspberry pi is cheap these days.
  • 2
@whimsical what is cheaper? I bought a 6 core xenon workstation for like $200. Too me that is cheap compute for a server. The 2GB rasp pi is like $50 for a version 5. Not comparable to the workstation in compute though.
  • 1
@YourMom that workstation is a lot more powerful. Also, consider second handed, that always wins.

@whimsical Recently got myself a referbished X13 (Gen 1) for a really low price. Works great, I love it.

@SoldierOfCode you mean xps13? It's on my list too. But there's a chance that i still buy a new x270. Want to have it close to new state. Can't help it, it's my favorite and for compute i have dedicated stuff so :P But xps13 is good idea. It was seriously in my mind last week. ALso second handed because the new one does not have the right processor. But such long battery time y'know. But x270 also has 2 batteries and i have my cool beasus power bank being awesome.
