When your computer crashes as your about to commit a major piece of code

Always at least stage it! If you have fancy editor, I'm pretty sure there's some auto backup file too.

Also, don't care about how the commits look like locally. That's the point of a local repo: do what you want, then clean(e.g. squash) and push to remote the polished thing. :P
