How many of you have managers who grill their employees for coming late?

Maybe it's just me being downright lazy but I've always had this idea that working for a tech company would mean flexible timings and no fixed minimum working hours (as long as you meet your deadlines and get the job done).

I've been working for this small AI/CV startup for about 10 months now and my manager/founder's nephew, who is my age(22) keeps grinding me for not coming on time. I'm not really a morning person (and my productivity decreases significantly whenever I wake up early) but I make sure I meet my deadlines.

Initially, I used to avoid all this BS but now it has started to annoy me. Suggestions?

    I firmly believe that if my manager watches the clock in the morning, I can watch it in the afternoon. Give me shit for being late and I'll never work overtime, I will never answer emails or the phone outside of work hours and I will always take a second sick day because it's less suspicious than getting over the flu in a day.

    Or... You just chill and accept that most of us are useless before our 10 o'clock coffee anyway.

    @tmpnull Whoa! That makes so much sense, thanks a lot for your opinion. The problem is that this is my first job and I have no clue how to deal with problems like these. Anyway, thanks once again!

    @pechora the honest truth is this person is clearly too inexperienced to be a manager in the first place, which I know something about. I was a manager at 19 and it was totally wrong. I had no idea how to get people to respect me as a manager and as a result I settled for just being everyone's friend. This person probably thinks that by calling you out on your time keeping they are doing a good job establishing authority. Plus they probably think that's what their job is. There are two approaches you could go for (ignoring the option of just coming in on time).

    Discuss with HR about formalising flexible working so you can come in later.

    Look for a new job. (Might seem drastic)

    Do not go over their head and do not try to prove a point by continuing to come in late. The only way to beat a shit boss is to do your job properly along with all the parameters including time keeping.

    Im a front end dev for a very large company, and team standards are 8:30-4. You should be there during that time because you'll be available if your team needs to reach you. It's not just about getting *your* work done, it's about contributing to the team or at least being available to.

    Had a developer that was late to our 9a stand ups. Moved stand ups to 9:30. Was late to those as well. Told him that if he comes in late to our stand up, he had to wait outside until we were done. Office was made of glass, which made for good comedy. I did not make up a random time for the stand up, the team wanted it at that time. He was the only one who could not make it, no matter when it was scheduled.

    I still laugh to remember his Civic coming flying down the cul de sac at 85 mph in an effort to make it on time. Every day.

    My policy was be here during the stand-up, after that I did not care. Come in early, leave early. If the stand up were scheduled for 3p, old boy would have been late for that too. He was new to the professional world. At some point, dude will have to be on time.
