In my master equivalent thesis, I was supposed to build upon a year of work from my predecessors. However, I argued that it had no actual foundation and would never work properly, so I threw it away and started from scratch.

The prof was astonished and commented "well it's your thesis", insinuating that the risk was on me. Turned out I had been right.

Been there. Had to do that for my Bachelor's. It's always awful to work on code from a prior thesis. It was done under narrow time constraints and people usually just want to get finished anyhow, so even if the goal they set is usually achieved, one cannot expect to build anything on that.

@Maer it wasn't even that the code was ugly. It had no scientific foundation, that was the problem.
