Everyone's crying about big bad companies using innocent graduates by offering them a few non-paid internships. But when it comes to mgmt manipulating devs into non-paid overtime by questioning their estimates, noone sees a problem.

For fuck's sake, you are the devs, YOU and ONLY YOU can do tech estimates, not the mgmt. You are nothing close to a developer if you allow them to manipulate you like that. Just a dummy coder at best. A puppet with no backbone. An amoeba. You are DISGUSTING and a disgrace to developers' proffession.

Start acting proffessionally for once!!

I see a problem in both of these, and I am certainly not alone.

Overtime for me is a case of one time: sure, its urgent and we just need to plan for more time next time, second time: it better be bloody important and you better have a good excuse as to why this happened, third time: Sorry, i'm not here to make up for poor management, i'll see you tomorrow...

@irene And remember urgent != important. Often things are made urgent for arbitrary reasons (well I already told my boss it would be done by then)

The eisenhower matrix (urgent-important matrix) is always in the back of my mind for this kind of thing.

People want job security and for some of them security and feeding whole family is more important than your young persons idealism.

@zemaitis i'd get that if it was elderly behaving as described. But it's youngsters who so this shit! Young backless minions doing anything they are asked.

Professional specialist provides his family better than a minion. And pro's family does not have to wait their father to come home at midnight. And a pro's family can afford family weekends.

@zemaitis Job security is never going to be worth more than my own dignity and freedom.

Right now I would take any paid or unpaid internship. I have a paid one lined up and an unpaid one confirmed and I'm still looking for way more.

In college, I'm a paying intern. At least jobs teach me without taking from me.
