Our working hours is 9 to 6, but it feels embarrassing to go home at 6 because you are expected to work overtime.

    Are you getting paid for it?
    If not, what the crap are you doing?

    Also, overtime is a great way to run yourself out. And if the company is doing that to everyone... I see low dev quality and high turnover in their future.

    Expected to do overtime === Expected to become depressed, sleep deprived and die.

    Get the fuck outa there.

    I was in that exact situation except also expected to work on weekends.

    I was extremely depressed and hated everything about life and had gained so much weight from stress eating and having no time to work out.

    Do yourself the biggest favor you can, get out of there before you over exert yourself and end up burnt out. Don't give into perception that working more gives you more value as an employee.

    @CaramelBear This.

    Giving into the pressure to work regular overtime (especially for free) doesn't earn you respect -- it robs you of it.

    I hate places that just expect it, or managers that go "well look the rest of the team are doing it why can't you be a team player" or words to that effect. I've got no problem doing some overtime short term to crunch a big bug or cause something unexpected happened, but let's be honest if it's all the time it's being mis-managed or they done f***ed up when planning.
