People want more from their jobs than just a paycheck. In simpler times the kind of work Americans did usually hinged on chance, a parent's wishes or circumstances beyond an individual's control. More information here: https://resumesarea.com/cv-writing/
Employees stayed in the same work until retirement or drifted from one job to another without any plans.
This is less true today. "We must think more in terms of a career path, a changing economy, our own needs and values when making career choices" according to the American Association of Counseling and Development. Personal satisfaction and professional growth take on new paradigms. For these reasons, more people than ever are seeking the help of career counselors with graduate degrees in counseling, who have completed supervised training in career guidance, and who are certified by a professional association.
Professional Career Counselors assist individuals in the career development process that involves making important decisions about their goals. Once the goals have been developed, then one can go about learning the skills and strategies to reach their goals. Career counselors do not make decisions for their clients or act as an employment agency to get them jobs. Rather, counselors are skilled coaches who, most frequently, use the following process.
• Self Assessment - Assist clients to develop self-knowledge, recognize skills which are transferable, skill set priorities, work styles, special talents, interests, values and needs.
• Work/World Research – Use resources, reference materials and people contacts in chosen career fields to gather information related to career options. It is then a client is ready to make decisions and focus on an appropriate career path.
• Job Search Techniques - Develop a well planned, targeted and an assertive marketing campaign using the most accepted strategies for success.
Work determines lifestyle, self-worth and self-esteem. With the assistance of a career coach, individuals will learn to use self-management skills and a pro-active and empowered approach to their lives. Working with a coach requires an investment both in time and money, but it is a positive step towards an integrated and balanced life style that enhances success.
