    Best of luck!

    I have a problem in that game.
    I keep forgetting I have things other than the pistol.

    Then again I've gotten really good with that pistol...

    @Root yeah, that mechanic of having a very small amount of ammo and forcing you to engage in melee is not that fun. At least there's a pistol 🀷
  • 2
    @irene The game looks good and runs very well, but other than that it's kind of terrible. I'd give it a 4/10.

    @Root *cries my doom fan boy tears*

    @lxmcf just being honest πŸ˜‹

    Having worked in game dev, I have a good idea what the developers went through, and I absolutely don't want to belittle their efforts or achievements. But bleh, the designers? They molded it into yet another pretty console shooter. And don't get me started on the writing.

    But from little things hidden in the game, you can feel some of the devs' plight:
    `patd/needs/sleep.load` ... `--nocrunch` πŸ˜…πŸ˜’
    Pat D, this is for you. 🍺🍻πŸ₯ƒπŸ«πŸ€—

    @Root haha yeah I know.

    And wait... What writing?
    Doom is just about kicking heads in, there's no story
  • 3
    @lxmcf apparently there is some story in new one. But it's sorta how Carmack said: "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

    I loved DOOM just for the run and gun, but agree it is indeed not worth a high rating. What I most loved from development perspective is how Mick Gorden tells about making the music for the game on GDC 😝😝

    @Root that's me playing tomb raider. Any tomb raider. I don't know why I always fall back to her default guns.

    @irene i guess opinions differ on that

    3 girl gamers and developers in one thread...

    @irene I'm going to get that quote tattoo'd on every bare piece of skin I possess...

    @nett18 there are no girls on the internet.

    @irene that's what I thought

    @irene
    Some genes don't need story, but to say story isn't important? Without story there's no motivation for the player to continue, nothing to keep their interest. There's no lingering positive memory afterwards. Without story there is no worldbuilding, no depth. The game turns into cheap entertainment, and is quickly forgotten.

    Imagine these games without story and worldbuilding:
    NieR Automata
    Chrono Trigger
    Final Fantasy
    Undertale
    Unreal
    Mass Effect
    Portal
    StarCraft
    WoW

    Just how boring would they be?

    Games can absolutely be fun without story and worldbuilding, but those are what can turn a game into a masterpiece.

    @Root StarCraft & Portal πŸ’•

    @Root psss, porn without some plot is boring as well 😁
    But anyway even good plot without good mechanics would be a bad game overall.

    PS: in StarCraft campaign is optional. I never played it seriously, only skirmishes. And plot in MMORPG games... Is even less relevant than in porn 🀣

    @irene I can't believe I can and will agree to that.. I Agree

    @Root I think it's more the fact that it highly depends on the game itself, DOOM didn't need a story because the running and gunning was the real focus.

    Firewatch needed a story else it would literally just be walking around and have no real reason to play it

    Take Minecraft for example, I don't even consider it a game, it's essentially a game engine at this stage but it has no story and is one of the biggest phenomenons out there

    @lxmcf A game can make up for lacking in some areas by excelling in others, at least somewhat. But good story always adds, just like good mechanics do.
  • 1
    @irene you really missed out on something. The story of StarCraft and StarCraft 2 is great.
  • 0
    @Alice it might be, but those games are great not because of the story at all.
  • 0
    @irene sure, but the story is seriously great, too. Not to forget there are a lot of mechanics that are only available in the campaign. Especially in StarCraft 2. Very worth playing through the story.

    Hell, we have books about StarCraft.
  • 0
    @Alice maybe 🀷 but I'm not interested. That story is hidden behind pretty hard fights. I'm not that good at RTS to beat it.
  • 0
    @irene hm. I don't know. I played through most of the SC1 & Broodwar story back then as a kid when I wasn't really good at RTS games. But I can assure you that the SC 2 campaigns are still a lot easier and built around much more story.
