I'm using a $800 hackintosh HP laptop with i7 Haswell and 12 GB of RAM. Xcode runs perfect, iOS Simulator too.

If the 13" size is good for you then they are still solid machines. Ram and SSDs are cheap these days and it will be fast with simple upgrades. Apple says it maxes out at 8gb of ram but it will take 16gb. If you really want a fast machine remove the optical drive and run a dual SSD RAID 0, I'd recommend regular backups...

I have a 2011 17" and it is performing top notch.

@jakallergis model is 17t-BTO, but it's missing on the HP website 🙄
    Specs:
    Intel i7-4700MQ 2.4GHz with turbo 3.4GHz
Intel HD 4600 (1536 MB of RAM on macOS)
    12 GB RAM 1600 MHz
    Touch screen 1600x900
    Fingerprint sensor
Comes with HDD and CD-ROM but I added an SSD replacing the CD.
I also had to replace the WiFi card to be compatible with macOS.
The fingerprint sensor doesn't work on macOS.
Everything else works perfectly fine on OS X El Capitan.

@jakallergis To install macOS I used the Clover bootloader, patching the ACPI and some kexts (kernel extensions).
This wasn't my first Hackintosh so I didn't follow any guide, but you can find generic guides on InsanelyMac and Tonymacx86

@BrianValente sounds excellent! One question though..
    $800 and no GPU?

@jakallergis No, only Intel. It's good for the price.
